WTF Times: 'schoolboys die in cliff fall'

How about: schoolboys AND THEIR MOTHER are brutally murdered by violent man?

I am so sick of the way this stuff is reported. If murdering your family is a valid response to 'not being able to see a way forward' then why aren't people doing it all the time?

The journalist tweeted someone, I'm assuming Venezuelan press, earlier today, asking for more info on Laura.
That's interesting. I'm not on twitter, but he's put a gap between the @ sign and the name of the account he's tweeting. Does that mean that it won't actually be seen by the person??? So won't get any relevant replies???
See twitter.com/DavidhBrown
I've attached a pic.

Yeah. Bonkers way to go about getting info.

ColdFingered · 10/05/2019 10:00

Yes, it's like a tick-box exercise. Remove old tweet, and replace it with one suggesting he has an interest in the victim - but without any true intent...

truthisarevolutionaryact · 10/05/2019 10:12

Awful awful article minimising murder. Just in case this hasn't already been posted, here's how to complain about articles in the Times:

The media is only holding up a mirror to the entire patriarchal criminal justice system. This is an institutional problem. I don't know how it can be tackled when the police, coroners, judges, prosecution, politicians, newspaper editors, etc are all geared towards finding reasons and justifications for males raping and killing women (I'm generalising now, not just speaking about this case) and victim blaming.

thelastgoldeneagle · 10/05/2019 13:00

ColdFingered - 'Journalist' David Brown has removed the tweet you posted, and all replies! Hmm

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 10/05/2019 13:02

stupid prick.

Loopytiles · 10/05/2019 13:11

The media it not “only holding up a mirror”: articles could easily focus on the crimes, the victim and the broader problem of domestic violence. as PPs have highlighted there are guidelines for journalists - not hard.

ColdFingered · 10/05/2019 13:16

Hmm! I guess he's given up finding out any more information about her. Sad

Having Googled, the poor woman was from Venezuela, her children were born there, but they and her husband had Portuguese citizenship. They'd only been here a year, so perhaps she was quite isolated.

Yes, you don't need detailed knowledge of the victim to condemn the perpetrator.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 10/05/2019 16:16

Bit late but I've finally emailed a complaint about this.

I'm really disappointed at the lack of response so far from anyone involved, particularly the journalist.

@sagradafamiliar I agree with you about the justice system - having said that, most of the people I work with in court (police officers, prosecutors and magistrates) are shit-hot on DV and very keen to prosecute and punish abusers. The problem is that a lot of good prosecutors don't do public work as the pay is shit, there's no money in the system so trials keep collapsing due to paperwork falling down the cracks and the police being overstretched, defendants opt for CC hearings if they can as they know juries are more sympathetic than magistrates to sexual and domestic crimes, and quite often complainants and witnesses change their minds about prosecuting and just don't turn up to court. It's very depressing.

Loopy and yet they don't. Media and CJS are closely related.
Now I'm so glad to hear that most of the people you've come across are on it, unfortunately in my role I've been left saddened by the attitudes of some of those in the same sectors but that's another thread. But more than that, it's at an institution level, not individual level. The culture needs to change. I agree with your post.

CaledonianSleeper · 12/05/2019 21:39

@Loopytiles OK, maybe ‘root cause’ wasn’t the correct choice of words - what I meant was yes the reporting is dreadful, biased towards the male muderer, all the things that have been said in this thread, and of course the reporter and the newspaper should take responsibility for that. But what on earth was the coroner up to..??!! This is a member of the UK judiciary, and he also seems to have had a clear bias towards or pity for the the murderer. Shouldn’t we be equally concerned about that? Or even more concerned...?? The whole thing’s fucking appalling frankly, but I think this thread is chucking all the shit at The Times and the Coroner’s getting off much too lightly.
