UKIP candidate Carl Benjamin

I don't know why I'm surprised that this monstrosity is not in the slightest bit ashamed of himself but Jesus suffering Christ, how the hell can this be excused as "satire" and "humour". Benjamin’s remarks would be unacceptable "down the pub", on Twitter or at the hustings. Rape jokes are never funny. No exceptions.

  • Mr Benjamin, who is standing in the European elections, tweeted that he "wouldn't even rape" Ms Phillips. He has refused to apologise for the remark made in 2016, arguing that "any subject can be the subject of a joke."*

Firstly, The one defining characteristic of a joke is that it's funny. There's absolutely no element of humour in that tweet.

Secondly, whether something is a joke or not, there are things which are simply unacceptable in civilised society. There are vast numbers of racist and disablist jokes. Being a 'joke' doesn't make something ok.

European Commissioner for the Security Union:

@JKingEU
Julian King Retweeted Jess Phillips
This is just disgraceful. The rest of Europe looks on and asks what has happened to British politics?

@jessphillips
Guess what I am finding hard is the awakening to an even bigger audience of the "would we or wouldn't we rape Jess Phillips" because of legitimising of the perpetrator. I've dealt with it in drips for nearly 4 years and just deleted or blocked. It's like a torrent at the moment

MockerstheFeManist · 07/05/2019 15:57

We know there is an audience for this sort of thing online:

Batten and UKIP seem to be strategically set on tapping into it.

Let's see how the experiment plays out.

bettybeans · 07/05/2019 16:02

Exactly Mockers. Satire, my arse.

The strategy here is so transparent. It's horrible watching people go through the whole "who is this Carl Benjamin guy?" and going off to find out or watch his stuff.

He's dog whistling the worst of the worst.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 07/05/2019 16:05

This is at least partly on Twitter

They should be coming down on this shit like a tonne of bricks

truthisarevolutionaryact · 07/05/2019 16:09

Awful man and awful comments. To think that he's standing to represent the UK.

MockerstheFeManist · 07/05/2019 16:11

Very offensive to dogs to be compared to this lot.

Memories of Smethick 1964 and, "if you want a N-etc for a neighbour, vote Liberal or Labour..."

Peter Griffiths MP, the beneficiary of this campaign, would be a 'parliamentary leper,' said PM Harold Wilson. The Tories objected to Wilson's bad langauge.

Griffiths lost the seat in 1966, but came back in Portsmouth from 1979 to 1997.

beeyourself · 07/05/2019 16:18

Rape jokes are abhorrent. Every single man who has liked/encouraged this idiot should be ashamed of themselves

Traveler001 · 07/05/2019 16:18

Does he have a list of all the women he ‘would even rape’ he could publish on Twitter alongside his list of women he ‘wouldn’t even rape’? Because to consider a woman and decide he wouldn’t rape her suggests to me that there are some women he would. Otherwise it goes without saying obviously. Idiot.

BettyDuMonde · 07/05/2019 16:37

KiwiFarms have a thread covering his online behaviour over the last three years.

They keep tabs on a wide range of poorly behaved individuals.

woman19 · 07/05/2019 16:59

@carolecadwalla
Misogyny is a gateway drug for the far right. And it is rife across Twitter. To be on here is to be exposed to it every single day. These platforms & their lack of accountability are toxic. And we are all complicit in normalising it

Twitter is enabling it.

But "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good (Women) to do nothing."

Goosefoot · 07/05/2019 17:04

It reveals, to me, that aside from probably being a misogynist, that guy is too stupid to be elected.

tinytemper66 · 07/05/2019 17:06

I have had people on Twitter telling me how wonderful he is when I commented that he was misogynistic and that his words were violent.

hipsterfun · 07/05/2019 17:09

Provincial blowhard.

woman19 · 07/05/2019 18:39

@jessphillips
Just leaving Westminster and and man ran down the street along side me asking me about why Carl Benjamin shouldn't be able to joke about my rape. Shouting "I pay your wages".

Ereshkigal · 07/05/2019 19:03

Exactly this.

Dervel · 07/05/2019 19:16

Umm misogyny is just as rife on the left as it is on the right. The right would like to see women dependant on individual men, the left would prefer to see them dependent on the state. Neither are promoting liberty.

donquixotedelamancha · 07/05/2019 20:28

The man is a scrote.

I think in part his moronic 'I'm sticking it to the PC elite' nonsense is given credence by the extent to which the political class has become contemptuous of the rest of society.

That said you have to be a special kinds of idiot to imagine the answer to excessive censorship and lack of social mobility is 'heh, heh, heh, you know what Beavis, I wouldn't even rape her'.

Yep.

I wonder if this is the same person.

woman19 · 08/05/2019 07:35

Pictures of the men who chased and harassed Phillips near HOC yesterday are circulating. I hope they are arrested and charged.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 08/05/2019 07:39

Pictures? I don't usually like online justice but... I wonder what the mans wife/mother/sister/daughter thinks?

ImGenderfree · 08/05/2019 07:54

I thought Twitter recognised this as a problem and were doing their best to sort it out - as disclosed in the parliamentary committee where Joanna Cherry clinically dissected them. Oops silly me thinking that Twitter would actually do what it said it would.

I think this behaviour is abhorrent and makes it more difficult for women to be public figures. I didn’t think UKIP could sink any lower but they just keep surprising you.

releasethehounds · 08/05/2019 07:59

Let's face it, no sane woman would consent to it with this loser. UKIP know their market and their appealing to it.

woman19 · 08/05/2019 07:59

Grin
I love Joanna Cherry.
That inquisition should be used as teaching material on all law courses and in school PSHE classes.
