www.theguardian.com/books/2019/mar/04/non-binary-trans-author-nominated-for-womens-prize-for-fiction

Oh wait, she's trans nonbinary and doesn't identify as male or female even though she is clearly female!

FFS at this utter nonsense. I feel like I'm trapped in an unending episode of Brass Eye.

Non binary but happy to be nominated for the The Women’s Prize for Fiction. Handy.

GerryblewuptheER · 04/03/2019 08:08

Shows how they all pick and chose doesn't it.

pachyderm · 04/03/2019 08:10

Yes. And you can imagine those male "nonbinary persons" being attracted to women's prizes too. So like women's changing rooms, prisons, sports etc, it's going to get awfully crowdedAngry

Article giving more background on this person's transition.

Interestingly I agree with them in that I don't see myself in terms of gender (aka stereotypes) either; I just see myself as me. I think that's pretty brave and stunning standard.

It's okay not to want to have kids. I'm surprised that some people think that makes you not a woman somehow? Is that what they are trying to say? I'm not sure if they are meant to be the spirit? Demon? Thing, or if they were frightened it would inhabit them....

Erm

Is it too early on a Monday for this? 👀🤷‍♀️

How can they print such utter garbage?
It's completely meaningless! I don't "identify" as a man or a woman either. I just happen to be a woman. Just like this writer. Me and her, walking around with our fannies AND our personalities. .
Do people like this think that all other women think about being female all the time? I don't think we do??
Aaarrgh. It is like bloody Brass Eye!

merrymouse · 04/03/2019 08:14

It’s not clear how this nominee is different to any other female nominee - have they all believed that they have a feminine identity?

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 04/03/2019 08:18

Oh

Sometimes FGM was used to get rid of the evil spirit.

Dont they ask themselves why there is a category for women in the first place? Has being non binary solved anything?

nauticant · 04/03/2019 08:21

It's woke dog-whistling. The article is to provoke readers into thinking "Ooh, it's so complicated! I don't know what to think!" when the reality is so mundane I read the article twice to make sure I hadn't missed something first time.

Grin

Shouldn't laugh but it's so true.

weaselwords · 04/03/2019 08:23

I wish Charlie Brooker would do a Black Mirror about this.

merrymouse · 04/03/2019 08:24

Sometimes FGM was used to get rid of the evil spirit.

But apparently, according to article, removing the uterus is the only really efficient way to do this.

But I suppose we just can’t see through our western colonial cultural bias...

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 04/03/2019 08:41

Ha merrymouse It's true. I need to open my mind!

I'm still trying to reconcile my mind to the fact a therapist found this person "sane"

Today's lesson

Woman: has no meaning
Sanity: has no meaning
Evil spirits: live in certain women's wombs and bring bad luck

Sandsnake · 04/03/2019 08:45

I read this earlier and just didn’t really get it, to be honest. The author of the article framed it as if she was expecting a massive backlash (from, I presume, GC people). However, the author that she nominated for a woman’s prize is a woman. OK, she identifies as gender fluid but she’s still a biological woman and her place on the long list doesn’t take anything away from other women. Therefore, I don’t see a problem - or even much of a talking point. If the author nominated had been male identifying as gender fluid that would be a totally different matter...

merrymouse · 04/03/2019 08:51

There's something incredibly patronising - and possibly colonialist? - about observing somebody choosing to undergo surgery to get rid of an evil spirit - and just thinking 'oh yes, those ethnic people and their different ways!'.

If you need to remove your womb because you are frightened of giving birth to a child with an evil spirit, you are utterly and completely trapped by your sex. What happens to women without access to this kind of surgery?

Lamaha · 04/03/2019 08:53

I don't understand the trans part. Where does this come in? She is trans becoming male, or what?

As for me, I don't have a female "identity" at all. I have a female body which has had typically female experiences, including menstruation, childbirth, menopause. I don't understand where "identity" comes into it. I do have a personality which consists of different traits.

rosablue · 04/03/2019 08:56

Anyone else think this was a cynical move to get extra brownie ‘woke’ points over other entrants in order to have a better chance of winning - as it means that the competition gets more column inches if they have something trans/non-binary to click bait the headlines with...

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 04/03/2019 08:59

merrymouse
I guess what always happens to women blamed for bringing evil on a community.

Warms hands

But hey! I'm sure they'll get the prize! What does propagating superstitions that lead to FGM and worse matter! Angry

OrchidInTheSun · 04/03/2019 09:03

She sounds mentally ill.

nettie434 · 04/03/2019 09:12

Lamaha They see themselves as neither/both - don’t think they are planning on becoming a man. Non binary and trans both come under the Stonewall trans umbrella

Floisme · 04/03/2019 09:19

Non binary but happy to be nominated for the The Women’s Prize for Fiction.
Nail on head.

MhairiV · 04/03/2019 09:25

One of these days my eyes are going to roll so hard they fall out of my head. I don't "identify as male or female" either, pretty sure you could say the same for most people. 🙄

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 04/03/2019 09:37

Oh that poor confused person...

littlbrowndog · 04/03/2019 09:39

The confused person has had bits cut off the persons body and her womb removed
Will th3 person find happiness ever
