At the risk of setting off previous arguments again, there was a piece about this on Radio 4's Front Row last night. A journalist called Vic Parsons (who seems to be involved with The Pool...
) did in fact criticise the prize committee for not thinking through a defined policy in advance and not being clear.
She also said that if they include one 'enby' person - she didn't use that word, to be fair - in a women's prize , logically they ought to include all. Which would mean 'assigned male at birth' people (she did say this - the M word wasn't uttered either by her or the interviewer).
She ended up by referring to the patriarchy and saying that there was still a need for women's prizes, as there was for best actress awards in the Oscars, for example.
It was quite an interesting listen. There was a lot of tiptoeing around, much use of woke terms, and some cheerleading for 'inclusiveness', but the overall message was more nuanced and critical than I'd expected, tbh.
