Cancelling tv licence: stop funding misogyny

Victoriapestis · 02/03/2019 23:30

I do appreciate the recent panorama programme showed some progress in the BBC’s trans coverage. But overall my impresssion is that the BBC has sadly become an unbalanced, pro gender stereotype, misogynistic organisation that is actively damaging women’s rights, deliberately silencing gender critical voices, and thereby normalising oppressive and damaging behaviour. (I’m feeling cross.)

I feel very uncomfortable about the fact my payments are subsiding this and really want to stop. I would not fund pornhub, because of the damage it does, normalising stereotypes, etc, and similarly don’t want to fund the bbc.

So, has anyone else cancelled on this ground? Did you contact tv licensing to say why? And what hoops does one need to jump through?

Again in simple English please.

Procrastinator1 · 02/03/2019 23:52

Try reading out loud to yourself Justasking, that might help.

userschmoozer · 02/03/2019 23:55

I plan to cancel mine on International Womens Day as a protest about them no platforming GC people at the request of trans activists.

I don't have a TV aerial or terrestrial TV. I won't use the BBC website.

plattercake · 03/03/2019 00:03

I am right on the edge of doing this, and DH is too. I used to be a big supporter but the misogyny and bias is appalling.

I think it would have more impact, or only have an impact if a large number of women/households do it at once, on International Women's Day for eg, followed by an email.

It need only be for a month or so. Just to make the point that women don't have to take this from them.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 03/03/2019 00:04

I did it today.

plattercake · 03/03/2019 00:09

haha cross post userschmoozer!

We'd miss some live TV but it would be worth it. I do also think the licence fee needs to go now. They can;t be trusted to be impartial and there;s no redress so its not fit for purpose.

CheerioHunter · 03/03/2019 00:11

Not sure how you would go about telling them why you're cancelling.

But to cancel just click the following link... www.tvlicensing.co.uk/cs/no-licence-needed/about.app

And follow the four simple steps laid out.

userschmoozer · 03/03/2019 00:12

It would have more impact if a group of us do it Smile

plattercake · 03/03/2019 00:17

I'd cancel but also start a complaint, adding that I am also cancelling.

I'm still boycotting Ocado (and others) and will carry on. And actually v glad to be away from Ocado as I had also ignored the robot issue in favour of my convenience (we have to shop online) but its better to do without and have the feeling of standing up for women, little though it might be.

Who is with us?!!

PerkingFaintly · 03/03/2019 00:20

Yep, I definitely think destroying the BBC is a much better idea than complaining to it.

Rupert Murdoch, owner of The Sun, News of the World as was, Fox News and Fox & Friends, has devoted much time and energy to this for years. For the obvious reason that his organisations will expand into the gap.

Which will be great, because then there will be less misogyny and bias in our media.

plattercake · 03/03/2019 00:30

I take your point Peking but the BBC don't listen to complaints. I would use my boycott to teach them that they cannot be so arrogant, not to destroy them. If they cannot be less biased then they destroy themselves.

I'm not keen to prop up one source of misogyny just to possibly impinge another - Fox seems to be thriving even with the BBC.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 03/03/2019 00:33

I have made 14, well thought out complaints to the BBC in 2 years. They haven’t responded with any level of seriousness to a single one.
I will no longer pay them a penny, nor use any of their services.

irnbruforlife · 03/03/2019 00:50

I cancelled my tv licence 4 years ago after the Scottish independence referendum because I was sickened at the bias shown against it. Funnily enough the amount of mners who ridiculed me and claimed the BBC was impartial and held to the highest standards and I (and most of pro Indy voters) were just bitter and making it up 😂😂😂 this latest bit of BBC bias towards t ransgenders is just par for the course as far as BBC is concerned imo.

PreseaCombatir · 03/03/2019 01:50

I think loads of people genuine believed this as well. This is just probably the first time many here have been on the wrong side of bbc’s ‘Right think’

This is brilliant. Your attempting to be sarcastic, but are in actual fact 100% correct 😂

Lemoncakestrudel · 03/03/2019 03:40

I cancelled but was too chicken to explain my full reasons why. Although the conversation was a bit funny
“when did you get rid of your telly?” “I’ve never had one”
“...”

WokeNotBloke · 03/03/2019 08:20

I intend to cancel today. I was angry after the Scottish referendum, but I still held onto the principle that we needed a high quality broadcaster.... and small people loved CBeebies 🤪. However, think you can get a better service now by selecting programs/ alternative news coverage.

Bebstar123 · 03/03/2019 08:25

We cancelled ours during the Saville scandal. I don't use any of there services direct though you can still legally watch their shows via another network (Netflix, Now TV etc). You can unsubscribe online, but you may have do do it any time you move unfortunately or you can still get hassled at the new address (letters nothing more).

I think it's also the case that not having a TV license means that you can't watch any live TV broadcast or stream at all, that includes other channels and any live stream on YouTube etc. So just bare that in mind if you're of the straight laced, statue observing variety.

MillytantForceit · 03/03/2019 09:03

You need a licence to receive television broadcasts, and the law has been amended to include the live streaming of tv output online or via cable tv services.

But unless they peer into your front room and see you doing it, there is no way to prove this. They are not allowed into your home without your consent.

You do not need a TV licence to listen to the radio, and this includes radio via Freeview and Freesat.

groundcontroltomontydon · 03/03/2019 09:13

Boycotting the BBC won't destroy it but it might precipitate the inevitable change to a more market-driven business model. And then they'll have to listen to their customers.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 09:21

I don't have a licence, just stay away from iplayer everything else is fine.

teawamutu · 03/03/2019 09:29

I complained about the no platforming of Nic Williams and got the same crappy C&P response everyone else did, which was (a) ineffably patronising and (b) going by public statements from the participants and presenter, an actual lie.

I won't bother complaining again, and I can't cancel my licence but I am going to Ofcom.

PreseaCombatir · 03/03/2019 09:47

I think it’s a disgrace you can’t go directly to ofcom about the bbc

GetRid · 03/03/2019 09:55

I honestly think that people who want to get rid of the BBC really haven't thought through the consequences of what life would be like without an independent public service broadcaster.

For sure the BBC has many, many flaws... But if it didn't exist, you'd very quickly end up with a US style media, with completely partisan commercial news broadcasters (Fox etc) dominating the output, almost no foreign news reporting because it's commercially unviable, and nowhere to go and just get the facts. Outside of the UK the World Service is considered to be one of Britain's greatest assets with literally millions of people relying on it for impartial reporting in countries where there is no independent media.

That's just news. How about all the stuff that the BBC funds that wouldn't be commercially viable and would just disappear? Eg
-Radio without ads.
-Kids programmes designed to be educational and without ads (CBeebies, CBBC).
-The Proms
-BBC parliament
-The Natural History unit in Bristol would close so no more Attenborough shows
-No more BBC website
-No local news or local radio
-No Welsh language stations
-No iPlayer
-No BBC sport
-No more new, exciting programmes/comedy/new formats that wouldn't be developed by a commercial company because of the risk

There will always be programmes or individual presenters that offend or are perceived as biased - but would you cancel your Netflix/Amazon subscription, or boycott Channel 4 or YouTube etc every time you disagreed with something they broadcast? If so you'd quickly end up with nothing to watch, listen to or read online anywhere!

(And no I don't work for the Beeb! I have just thought about this because of Brexit coverage - and I reckon the BBC needs reform and slimming down but not axing!)
