Cancelling tv licence: stop funding misogyny

Victoriapestis · 02/03/2019 23:30

I do appreciate the recent panorama programme showed some progress in the BBC’s trans coverage. But overall my impresssion is that the BBC has sadly become an unbalanced, pro gender stereotype, misogynistic organisation that is actively damaging women’s rights, deliberately silencing gender critical voices, and thereby normalising oppressive and damaging behaviour. (I’m feeling cross.)

I feel very uncomfortable about the fact my payments are subsiding this and really want to stop. I would not fund pornhub, because of the damage it does, normalising stereotypes, etc, and similarly don’t want to fund the bbc.

So, has anyone else cancelled on this ground? Did you contact tv licensing to say why? And what hoops does one need to jump through?

are you going to live without YouTube, Netflix, Amazon, Sky etc just because you don't agree with a few of their programmes? I expect you'll find many disagreeable shows on all of these outlets.

Indeed. These are also "pro gender stereotype, [...] normalising oppressive and damaging behaviour." YouTube in particular is a cesspit of sexual and other exploitation of children which has made its founders extremely rich.

Apparently this is ignorable.

Just like the Sidebar of Shame in the Daily Mail, page 3 in The Sun and Murdoch's Fox re-employing Roger Ailes after multiple settlements for sexual harassment over many years.

It seems to be just whether the outlet is "correct" on very specific issues.

Other misogyny and sexual exploitation... nah, not worth a boycott.

Perking

You seem to have got a bit overexcited and are working yourself up a bit.

You don't need to worry - this thread is not going to destroy the BBC.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 13:42

Apparently this is ignorable.

None of them are Claiming to be unbiased and represent me, the BBC is.

None of them Require me to pay for their service in order to watch things provided by another service.

None of these claim to be Public broadcasters.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 13:43

The BBC are failing in their duty to me, so they don't get my money.

It's that simple.

PerkingFaintly · 03/03/2019 13:53

I've said before that we as women are being trolled through the medium of "trans".

This is the sort of stuff I mean.

How did "trans" become the main marker on which we decide which entire media organisations we watch?

All BBC programmes, about everything (eg Call the Midwife about backstreet abortions) must be tossed out – because trans?

And dealing with trans issues – which noticeably do not impact most men whether they're pro, anti or nuanced – has completely sucked the oxygen out of dealing with women's issues that do require men to shuffle up, like economic equality and ending sexual violence.

justasking111 · 03/03/2019 13:54

Netflix, Amazon, Sky all have skeletons in their closets and are run by misogynists. Freeview the programmes they buy are made by misogynists. Money is laundered by making movies so do you stop going to the cinema. The BBC are babes in the woods by comparison.

Men run the media.... end of. Go read a book, mind you be careful there as well.

SardineQueenII · 03/03/2019 13:58

"All BBC programmes, about everything (eg Call the Midwife about backstreet abortions)"

TERRIBLE example

BBC would not link to any orgs giving abortion advice
Apparently too contraversial
Despite being a legal medical prceudre in UK

BBC showed hand as SEXIST WANKERS with that one.

What a shit example Grin

PerkingFaintly · 03/03/2019 13:59

BTW, the trolling is very effective, because of course we do have to engage with it.

Rather like someone setting my house on fire at the front so they can run in the back and help themselves to my valuables.

(Bonus points if the arsonist then appears with a bucket of water pretending to be the hero of the story.)

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 13:59

No, they just get watched on netflix next year.

How did "trans" become the main marker on which we decide which entire media organisations we watch?

Jimmy savile, Rolf Harris, Dave Lee Travis, Michael Salmon, Chris Denning, Geoffrey Wheeler and Stuart Hall, not trans, was the reason i stopped paying money to the BBC. But you'd only know that if you read through the thread.

SardineQueenII · 03/03/2019 14:00

Why are you now bringing fires into things

Telling women to DIAF if they do not agree with all this is standard form

Burn the witch

What subconsciously made you choose that example I wonder.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 14:01

Netflix, Amazon, Sky all have skeletons in their closets and are run by misogynists.

Yes, but none of them are claim to represent me as a member of the public, none of them have a duty to the public.

SardineQueenII · 03/03/2019 14:02

Tell us some more about how awesome the BBC approach to abortion /call the midwife was?

justasking111 · 03/03/2019 14:05

In USA many directors/actors are in the spotlight now accused of awful crimes against children, women and men. Spacey, Singer, Weinstein, Allen, Masterson to name five. Others are quaking in their boots, they are the tip of the iceberg.

The BBC are not exempt from this, they covered up things as well.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 14:06

No the BBC are a very powerful media organisation, one that has a monopoly on news in the UK and can swing public opinion.
A whole lot of dodgy people working there have used it to abuse and control the public, something proven repeatedly.

YOu have to Buy into murdoch's press, the BBC give it free.

PerkingFaintly · 03/03/2019 14:07

Actually you've just made it into a very, VERY good example of what I'm talking about.

Primetime, hour-long show with massive audience giving detailed account of the dangers of not having safe, available abortion.

But no one should see it, because they shouldn't watch the BBC, because the internet links given afterwards weren't directly to abortion advice but to the NHS page which gave links to abortion advice?

Now I agree with you completely that they should have given direct links. And I'd guess they got pressured by people who DO use the complaints procedures – very adeptly.

But I'm certainly not prepared to throw the baby out with the bathwater because I only got 98% of what I want.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 14:09

justasking111

Yes, I try not to give money to those people as well.
Victor Salva is another.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 14:10

they shouldn't watch the BBC

People can do or what what they like.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 03/03/2019 14:10

I stopped paying years ago (I used to pay despite not using because they would hound us otherwise) because the bbc was so politically biased in multiple directions.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 14:10

But I'm certainly not prepared to throw the baby out with the bathwater

Good for you, then don't.

Millions of people have though, and more will.

Free?? do you not pay your licence fee then...

HeavensNoHellYeah · 03/03/2019 14:15

Took you this long to notice???

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 14:16

do you not pay your licence fee then

If you had read through the thread you would know that i do not, as i have made clear in this thread.

But i do listen to the radio and watch BBC shows made by BBC studios on streaming services.

PerkingFaintly · 03/03/2019 14:17

No, they just get watched on netflix next year.

Wha...?

  1. In your universe, either the BBC has ceased to exist and the programme didn't get made; or the programme got made by the BBC, and paid for by Netflix paying the BBC and you paying Netflix. In which case you've still paid the BBC.

  2. What will you do if Netflix does not list the name of an abortion advice service after the programme? (Does it even do that sort of thing?) Will you boycott Netflix?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 14:20
  1. No, BBC studios is not the same company you pay a licence fee to, again you would know this if you read through the thread.

  2. Netflix isn't there to provid a service to the public.... The BBC is.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 14:22

BBC studios is a Commercial company, they make shows for the BBC and other networks. Money from BBC worldwide, the Commercial arm of the BBC is used for these shows.
