Cancelling tv licence: stop funding misogyny

Victoriapestis · 02/03/2019 23:30

I do appreciate the recent panorama programme showed some progress in the BBC’s trans coverage. But overall my impresssion is that the BBC has sadly become an unbalanced, pro gender stereotype, misogynistic organisation that is actively damaging women’s rights, deliberately silencing gender critical voices, and thereby normalising oppressive and damaging behaviour. (I’m feeling cross.)

I feel very uncomfortable about the fact my payments are subsiding this and really want to stop. I would not fund pornhub, because of the damage it does, normalising stereotypes, etc, and similarly don’t want to fund the bbc.

So, has anyone else cancelled on this ground? Did you contact tv licensing to say why? And what hoops does one need to jump through?

Bad me, naughty me. Naughty women.

PerkingFaintly · 03/03/2019 15:59

Hmm Sadly, people suggesting that lack of a direct weblink to abortion advice after Call the Midwife means we should do without the BBC altogether is a very good example of the point I'm making.

I'm not suggesting the BBC is wonderfully perfect. I agree completely that it is susceptible to pressure groups. Groups making enough noise get some influence in steering it, at least temporarily.

Indeed, as you say, external pressure is what got the BBC to put up a direct weblink.

I would rather they had got it "right" (in my eyes) first time, but when they don't, I'd rather pressure them to do it "right" than undermine the BBC's existence.

Because I know what the likely replacements look like, and many are really not (in my eyes) an improvement.

It's not just a show is it Perking

PerkingFaintly · 03/03/2019 16:05

As they shouldn't exclude info about a legal medical process due to pressure from religious groups

I agree with this completely.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 16:06

undermine the BBC's existence

OH I GET IT!
Very good!!!

Tanith · 03/03/2019 16:07

Tanith
You can spend your money where you like
So can everyone else
Why should women be forced to give their money to orgs because you say so?

I've said nothing of the kind. I can indeed spend my money where I like and I'm finding the over-investment of several posters on this thread, determined to convince us otherwise, to be questionable.

Boycott if you must. Just don't expect us all to join in. If we don't, it's because we disagree with you and that should be an end to it.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 16:13

Just don't expect us all to join in. If we don't, it's because we disagree with you and that should be an end to it.

Which leads to the question of why are those unintrested here arguing?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 16:20

"I'm giving up my TV licence"

"Okay, DON'T YOU DARE EXPECT ME TO!"

"okay"

"HOW DARE YOU EXPECT ME TO, WHAT WILL YOU GAIN?"

"£154 a year."

"YOU WON'T BRING DOWN THE BBC"

"Okay, i just don't want to give them my money, they don't represent me. The BBC make billions, i doubt we will bring them down"

"DON'T EXPECT ME TOO JOIN YOU HAHAHAHA"

"okay"

"I'M NOT INTERESTED!"

"yeah"

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 16:20

people are strange.

And what, Perking?

PerkingFaintly · 03/03/2019 16:54

That was in response to CaptainKirksSpookyghost's weird little dramatisation at 16:20:07, OVA.

Sorry, should have said that.

I think we probably all agree that:

a) we're free to spend our own money as we like (within legal limits);

b) we're free to argue that other people should do the same as us – but other people are free to argue that we should do something different.

PerkingFaintly · 03/03/2019 16:55

^ That's hardly profound.

But seems to be getting a little lost on this thread.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 16:57

I think we know it was a response to me, but I'm unsure of what you were trying to demonstate by copying and pasting those posts?

That people who are not me said things and gave their opinion?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 16:59

Everyone is free to give opinions and argue about opinions.

You've said you love the BBC, that's great.
I don't agree, i don't give them my money, you've asked me why and i've told you.
We have different opinions.
That's it, then you post someone else posts with hashtags?

MsMcWoodle · 03/03/2019 18:07

Well I'm stopping my direct debit. Sick of women being ignored, talked down to and no platformed. Don't care what happens to them.

MillytantForceit · 03/03/2019 18:20

Athletics on tonight on BBC:

"Plucky Brit, Plucky Brit, Plucky Brit is winning! ....Oh. Fallen over. Michael, how good was Plucky Brit?"

Have switched to Eurosport.

OhHolyJesus · 03/03/2019 18:33

I was raised with parents who worked at the Beeb and I worked there and met my husband there. It's really hurts me to think of what it has become. I've been very lucky to work there with some of the bravest people on earth. I respect them deeply, but the overall agenda and general reporting has made me realise they have lost their way.

Their model has needed a update for decades. I'd happily pay per view for the dramas so I didn't need to pay the licence fee but DH would never agree.

SardineQueenII · 03/03/2019 18:35

Perking you're the one who brought call the midwife into the thread in the first place!

I was pointing out that your idea that it was awesome and great for women missed the mark as they failed to include signposting to any of the many well respected abortion advice orgs in the UK.

You argued this point by saying it showed that the pro life people had got what they wanted by "adept" use of the complaints procedure so women could do the same.

Flagging the BBC as being susceptible to lobbying from extreme groups is also not a positive.

"I'm not suggesting the BBC is wonderfully perfect. I agree completely that it is susceptible to pressure groups. "

And then you change your mind. It is bad after all.

You seem to be changing what you are saying at every turn.

PerkingFaintly · 03/03/2019 19:47

Caught in a web of your own fictions there, SardineQueen.

Nowhere have I said the BBC is awesome. (Although a surprising number of posters have tried to put that in my mouth.Hmm)

Nor have I said "the BBC is bad after all."

All organisations – including the ones you want to see replace the BBC – do some things I think are good, and some things I think are dreadful. And many things which are not as good as they could be.

We can see the contenders for replacing the BBC, it's not like it's wild speculation. From their track records, I'm pretty sure the Murdoch media, YouTube and the rest wouldn't usher in an age of less misogyny and bias.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 03/03/2019 19:48

the ones you want to see replace the BBC

Put words into mouth...

PerkingFaintly · 03/03/2019 19:53

Sorry, I should say, "which posters on this thread have named to replace the BBC", as I don't know which particular ones SardineQueen is hoping for.

Oh, just refreshed and seen CaptainKirksSpookyghost's comment.

Yes, should read per correction.
