I didn't realise Miranda Yardley was in court today over alleged transphobic harrasment.

Debbie Hayton
@DebbieHayton
At Basildon Magistrates Court where Miranda Yardley is on trial for transphobic Harassment. The prosecution applied for reporting restrictions to prevent the complainant Helen Islan from being named. The judge has not granted them. So Helen Islan can be named.

Sending Miranda good luck vibes.

Thank god for the independent judiciary. One of the few parts of the public sector beyond the reach of these sickos.

DebbieInBirmingham · 01/03/2019 22:03

What a day! It was a good one. I hope that the police and CPS now take a very good look at this case and review their policy. They might also like to consider who they have been taking advice from.

I will say no more. :-)

OlennasWimple · 01/03/2019 22:04

Red - you are so wise and analytical (on this and the ongoing Westminstenders threads)

Trousering · 01/03/2019 22:08

I would really like to read Mirs defense. Mir is an outstanding irator and writer. Truly one of the most important intellects of our time.

Popchyk · 01/03/2019 22:09

Say more, Debbie.

Give us the lowdown.

Trousering · 01/03/2019 22:10

Orator! Never unintentionally an irritator.
Wink

Trousering · 01/03/2019 22:12

Salute Debbie.

EweSurname · 01/03/2019 22:14

red insightful as always Star

I'm afraid the smearing of Miranda continues, with giuliana, sprout and others distorting reality to fit their narrative

Thanks for keeping us posted, Debbie.

Trousering · 01/03/2019 22:16

Shout out to MrPan who was shat on by the MoJ.

You will are also in our thoughts at this point in time.

Melroses · 01/03/2019 22:18

Red - the Munchausens and the narcissistic mirror - learned so much here!

If there is one thing I have learned from parenting is that you think you have got everything right - and then you find you haven't. Children are there to prove you wrong. If you build your entire life, career and public persona and integrity on the way you have done it, well, it is a long drop.

Debbie - put your feet up. A long day well spent. (And do spill all Grin)

TimeLady · 01/03/2019 22:19

We should perhaps also remember that this case began ten months ago, when the climate was somewhat different to what it is now.

Helen and the whole trans movement were on the ascendency, and probably felt invincible, but the public mood has definitely changed in the interim, and chances are that any well-informed judge will have come across some GC articles in the press; I doubt if The Guardian is the judiciary's newspaper of choice.

EweSurname · 01/03/2019 22:19

And yes, say more please Debbie!

Miranda's vid outside the court covered all the pertinent issues, I thought.

  • Searing indictment of the criminal justice system
  • The harmful, silencing ideology of Mermaids
  • Basildon town centre being a bit of a dump

Masterful. Or mistressful. Take your pick.

Melroses · 01/03/2019 22:20

giuliana, sprout and others distorting reality to fit their narrative

Well G has had the same case thrown out by the CPS twice, so a bit of an expert there Hmm

Hi Debbie. Bloody well done. You and Miranda. It's a great day Thanks

RedToothBrush · 01/03/2019 22:34

I struggled a lot with my own identity over this matter.

I was raised liberal, educated in liberal values and to let everyone live as they wished in peace and safe from harm and believe in the concept of liberal democracy and the rule of law.

So legal fictions which have the effect of harming others unintentionally coupled with tactics to silence critical thought over this.

My own identity as liberal in simply asking questions and how people might react negatively to me for asking those difficult questions is something I've lived with for a long time.

I had to really look at and reexamine what liberal values and identity are really about. The two are distantly different. One represents a proper understanding of functionality of society and institutions, the other is superficial and shallow.

I know I do not need validation of my belief in liberal values to have a Liberal identity. I just am.

This needing to have yourself constantly validated and reassured or told you have worth for it, is a phenomenon that goes hand in hand with social media.

All this clicks, likes and retweets? It ultimately doesn't mean anything of value.

Going to sleep at peace with myself was more important in the end. My truth was found in realising I was being duped, manipulated and emotionally blackmailed into second guessing myself. If you are not free to express this, then this is the total opposite of liberal teaching. Ultimately liberalism is all about supporting critical thought and debate.

Freedom to self identify applies to everyone not just one part of the trans community. The problem comes when that's forced on others at the expense of their identity without thought to how to deal with the conflict.

We know there are parents who try to live through their kids. Tiger parents. Parents who insist their kids become doctors or lawyers. Parents who disapprove of choice of their children's partner and try to split them up.

What happens if you got one of these parents involved with gender ideology?

Just how free are Mermaids children?

RedToothBrush · 01/03/2019 22:35

*So legal fictions which have the effect of harming others unintentionally coupled with tactics to silence critical thought over this sat uneasily with me.

Missed end of sentence.

Thingybob · 01/03/2019 22:37

I'm no expert but I think it's all about statistics. The police need to encourage hate crime reporting and the CPS need to run with some transphobic hate incidents. I imagine this case was chosen because it represented one of the more appropriate incidents to run with, which isn't surprising when we see the police contacted about billboards and limericks.

Looking at the ONS hate crime statistics for 2018, there were only 1652 transgender hate crimes, less that 2% of the total recorded hate crimes. Obviously this rate is not high enough to support the narrative that trans people live under a constant threat of violence as evidenced by Stonewall surveys so it is assumed that trans crime goes under reported. Therefore, the police need to encourage more reports so everytime a lawyer, Dr or angry TRA rings 101 about a slight annoyance the police are happy as it can be recorded as a transgender hate crime. If the police need more reports then they can encourage more reporting and they don't care how spurious they are. They even ask for incidents of hate where no crime has been committed!

As well as the number of reported crimes, another important statistic is the percentage of these crimes that proceed to a charge/summons so that's where the CPS come in. Can anyone confirm whether today's case will be counted as a charge/summons despite the case being dismissed? If it is then it wasn't a wasted day after all as it will keep the police and CPS happy by bumping up their stats.

Yes, Red.

I'm wondering about children who are just confused with their place in this world - this confusing world - who latch onto 'gender identity' as a thing - and then are affirmed by their parents, Mermaids, the internet.

I feel in those circumstances it hard for them to call a halt to the whole thing. I watched a fascinating video on a different tread today - which touched on everything from "hysteria" in women in the Edwardian age, to Anorexia and bulimia in the 70s, to ROGD. It was most illuminating. Parents need to stop trying to find 'quick fixes" to their children feeling an identity crisis. Sex hormones & surgery on their perfect and healthy bodies are almost certainly not the answer.

littlbrowndog · 01/03/2019 22:50

Thank you red

TopBitchoftheWitches · 01/03/2019 22:51

I've been on Twitter most of the evening. What I don't understand is when you question a tra/Mra they can only come back with insults or slurs.

I questioned the reliability of one persons source and they came back mentioning the sun newspaper. I explained how awful it was to mentioned that paper to the majority of the U.K. and still they carried on. I was not mean, nasty or disrespectful at any time. 🤷‍♀️

Indeed there is a book about just that...." Crazy Like Us: The globalisation of the Western mind." Well worth a read.
