I have just seen this on the www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/a3518988-Rachel-McKinnon-weightlifter-and-Abigail-Shrier#prettyPhoto thread posted by Clitherow and felt it needed a separate mention. If I was on twitter I'd follow him!

I think the feminism they've had amplified to them is the woke, thought-policing, speech stopping with suspiciously many bearded be-penised proponents sort.

Perhaps, but looking at Zuby's timeline I don't know how much this would be him. The main places where people tend to get slapped in the face with that now are uni, employment particularly in certain sectors and then when they have their own kids which I don't think he does.

If he was born in August 86 as google tells me, Zuby was probably at uni in the mid 00s. He and I may have overlapped slightly at Oxford and I have to say, it wasn't very professionally woke, brave and stunning at that time. It also had the option of a whole political and cultural scene that was completely against that to say the least, in the form of the Oxford Union. He says he worked in IT for 3 years post graduation and again, that timeframe and sector doesn't really put him in the main firing line for thought policing TWAW stuff. Unless he was unlucky.

Though he may have gone as a mature student of course. But if not, I'm not sure how much benefit of the doubt he deserves on this. I do of course weigh it against the significant help he has given us this week however. Stopping this nonsense is going to involve working with lots of different people.

I can forgive the western women don't need feminism thing because I felt that way too until I had children.

Same. Embarrassingly, I was also one of the 'feminism has gone too far!!!1' numpties til I had kids Hmm

Uptheapplesandpears · 01/03/2019 10:16

I suppose if you're a younger woman with a certain degree of educational and class privilege, which most of the women he interacts with may well be, it can take the brutal realities of having kids for you to be kicked in the face with the bleeding obvious of what's done to us on account of our biology. If that happens to a woman he loves, he'll either get it or carry on oblivious because it suits him. He'll have plenty of company if it's the latter of course.

ToeToToe · 01/03/2019 10:20

Vixxxy - I was one who rolled her eyes at the word 'patriarchy'. Because I was young, things felt equal to me, surely patriarchy was a thing of the past? How wrong I was. Now I see the patriarchy everywhere.

I think the image of feminists being fat hairy man-haters - Milly Tant types (viz has a lot to answer for) - is far reaching, and perpetuated by those who would wish women to not call themselves feminists. It's been fairly successful - Zuby is correct that feminism has bad PR.

I watched "She's beautiful when when she's angry" recently (it's on Netflx - watch it if you haven't) - and I was struck by the unapologetic anger of the second wave feminists.

We need anger like this to stand up against trans-activism/gender theory - and what it's doing to women and children.

EweSurname · 01/03/2019 10:27

He's only a couple of months older than me so we may well have crossed paths at Oxford , if he went straight after school! I wasn't particularly involved in student politics (or indeed any politics) at the time so can't speak to the culture of no-platforming.

PreseaCombatir · 01/03/2019 10:57

Is he also transatlantic? Why is he putting on a weird American accent when he raps? I thought the so solid crew made that unnaceptable.
I won’t be buying any of his merch anyhow. He has enough sense to understand that there’s no ‘transgender’ community, as there are a lot of dissenting voices which are just ignored, but doesn’t seem to apply the same logic to feminism.

Saying that, his deadlift was amazing and really shines a light on the lunacy of it all to a new audience

Floisme · 01/03/2019 11:13

Zuby has made me laugh this week, for which I thank him. But I'm not yet convinced there's anything more.

As for merchandise, I'd rather give my money to Standing for Women.

But I'd be very happy to be proved wrong. And yes I agree, Stopping this nonsense is going to involve working with lots of different people.

ToeToToe · 01/03/2019 11:25

I definitely appreciate Zuby's common sense and good humour on this.

FemalePersonator · 01/03/2019 11:50

Yep. Me, too.

He doesn't have to attain a platonic ideal of woke feminism for me to appreciate what he is doing.

More power to you, Zuby!

Uptheapplesandpears · 01/03/2019 11:58

The stage we're at I'll take usefulness where we can get it. This was useful.

crumpet · 02/03/2019 13:34

Bollocks. It looks as if Zuby is a pro lifer. Such a shame, and a shame to distract from the excellent message he was otherwise sending.

EweSurname · 02/03/2019 13:42

David T Davies isn’t a politician I agree with on many things but I’m still grateful that he was the one of the few politicians to bother to meet with FairPlay for women and women’s place uk.

ToeToToe · 02/03/2019 14:06

Zuby is really quite anti-feminist. The way he's arguing on twitter is making me, er, not like him very much at all. Sorry Zuby, I know you'll be disappointed Wink but I have to undeclare my love for you.

Still glad he did the weightlifting thing though - it's been very helpful to the women's sports issue.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 02/03/2019 14:12

Do you think he was/is just trolling and using this for PR?

crumpet · 02/03/2019 14:18

I’m sure there was an element - or certainly once he saw the reaction he got. He successfully struck a chord, so it’s disappointing that he seems to have moved on so quickly (and in such a direction).

QuietContraryMary · 02/03/2019 14:18

I think he has his views and he's not particularly bothered about censoring them to appeal to anyone. I don't think he's trolling

FloralBuntingIsObnoxious · 02/03/2019 14:22

For crying out loud. He did a mildly funny tweet pointing out a glaringly obvious fact. It was useful in further raising the profile of this one specific issue. He's not Gender critical, he's not a proclaimed feminist of any stripe.

I am fully on board with getting the message out to all and sundry, but I can't quite get my head around the confused realization that he's also got some other views that don't gel with a lot of feminist thought. This was fairly obvious from the get go, wasn't it? I know it's cool when someone draws attention to the topic, but we really need to stop getting so over excited at the faintest hint of support.

Thank Zuby for acknowledging reality, sure. There's no need to join the fan club and get his face tattooed on yer leg because of it...

EweSurname · 02/03/2019 14:25

I don’t think he’s trolling either.

Even though I don’t agree with him on a lot of issues, it’s still refreshing to encounter someone who is up for discussing things.

And of course, he’s highlighted how easy it is for men to colonise women’s sports, which is something we do agree on.

crumpet · 02/03/2019 14:29

Well, not so much confused realisation (not sure where you got that from), more disappointment that the change in tack would dilute what good had been done. It was fun while it lasted, but at least there are other voices.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 02/03/2019 14:40

but we really need to stop getting so over excited at the faintest hint of support.

I agree, but really it’s so vanishingly rare that you can understand people getting excited when it happens.

youllhavehadyourtea · 02/03/2019 14:42

It was fun while it lasted

This.
We deserve some light relief now and then!

Bowlofbabelfish · 02/03/2019 15:08

He can believe what he likes on any issue.

The positives for me are that he got the sports issue in front of a whole load of people who would never have thought of it and he’s one more voice saying ‘this is ridiculous.’

There doesn’t need to be any more than that.,I would imagine he’s never thought too much about feminism and his only exposure has been to the ‘you go girl/pole dancing is so empowering!’ Type.

The more different voices that point out that the TRA position is bonkers the better. We are all going to be disappointed if we expect every one of those people to align 100% with feminist views.

Manderleyagain · 02/03/2019 15:08

Floral bunting is right. There was no reason to assume any kind of feminist opinions. This whole issue - and especially sport specifically - should be non partisan. People of all political persuasions should be able to see how daft it is.
