www.theguardian.com/society/2019/feb/14/the-pansexual-revolution-how-sexual-fluidity-became-mainstream#comments

"Nick, a 22-year-old physics and philosophy masters student at the University of York, initially thought he was bisexual as a teenager, but also now feels “pansexual” better fits his view that attraction isn’t really about gender. “I just find characteristics generally about people attractive"... a bi person might find tall guys attractive, and short girls. But he tends to fancy tall people, regardless of whether they are male or female.

As a bi sexual female who thinks gender is social BS, I had been under the impression that bisexuality related to both sex attraction. Apparently not, thanks random 22 year old bloke, thanks for sorting that out for me.

I'll also add that Nick decides to set the record straight in the comments section and gets very pissy when people suggest that he's fine to define himself, but maybe shouldn't be redefining bisexuality for everyone.

I find all self-indulgent little twerps a turn-off, regardless of sex. Guess that makes me pan-sexual too.

Metaplasia · 15/02/2019 09:06

I'm not sure what you're trying to say? Bisexual and pansexual are two different things

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 15/02/2019 09:10

I'm not sure what you're trying to say? Bisexual and pansexual are two different things

In what way? I’m assuming pansexual doesn’t mean the inclusion of livestock and inanimate objects? Or kitchen equipment.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/02/2019 09:11

All I can come up with is "Who cares?" Wear the label you like, fuck who you like. I do not now and never have cared.

But please stop trying to insist that it should be important to me! That I need to accept something.

Try it yourself - accept I am what I am, female heterosexual who doesn't rule out a change if/when she becomes a widow/divorcee!

That's called 'open minded' if you need a bloody label for me!

SmellsLikeAdultSpirit · 15/02/2019 09:13

Bisexual means you like both sexes
Pansexual means you like all fenders and are more woke and special

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/02/2019 09:13

Bisexual and pansexual are two different things Possibly. But it is based on pernickety semantics and a belief in gender that is not universal.

And please, don't do as one of the commenters did and try to sneak intersex individuals in as a 'proof' of there being 2+ sexes. Biology is...

SmellsLikeAdultSpirit · 15/02/2019 09:13

Genders but to be fair they may like fenders too

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/02/2019 09:14

all fenders OOh! Coal fire or automobile Smile

hackmum · 15/02/2019 09:19

I’m assuming pansexual doesn’t mean the inclusion of livestock and inanimate objects? Or kitchen equipment.

That was exactly my thought! Pansexual should mean you're happy to have sex with everyone and everything - children, animals, dead people, lawnmowers...

I was going to put something to this effect in the comments, but I'm still on the Guardian's naughty step, and I don't think they'd let it through.

Iused2BanOptimist · 15/02/2019 09:23

It hadn't occurred to me before but perhaps the Greek God Pan was a reference to someone who will shag anything, man or beast (or woman 😏). Anyway that's my definition of pan sexual and definitely not something to be proud of.

Melroses · 15/02/2019 09:26

ll fenders OOh! Coal fire or automobile

There are men who seem to have an obsession with having loads of cars Hmm

This whole cult seems to be about over-obsessive labelling.

beagadorsrock · 15/02/2019 09:26

Pansexual is really icky to me - I think they have no idea what they mean, maybe their worldview is coloured by fantasy fiction where you have ogres, elves, fairies, etc etc.

The only people whose bios have read pansexual I've come across - and purely through FWR - are furries. So I guess they include (fake) animals.

Metaplasia · 15/02/2019 09:30

Haha no don't worry I'm not a pansexual gender woke snowflake. As I understand it bisexual means being attracted to both men and women (bi = two), pan (many) means being attracted to any gender.

I've never dared wander over to feminism chat before, this was in the active section! So apologies if I'm against the grain.

Bowlofbabelfish · 15/02/2019 09:34

Bisexual and pansexual are two different things

Bisexual = attracted sexually to men and women.
Pansexual = attracted sexually to men and women.

What’s the difference? Apart from the degree of Special?

LangCleg · 15/02/2019 09:35

being attracted to any gender

But for those of us who are not adherents of the Gendered Soul religion, what does this even mean?

Attracted to sex stereotype presentations? What?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/02/2019 09:38

That was an interesting Google.

Apparently "pan sexual" was 'invented' in the early 20th century

All Google hits are recent definitions

The connection to the god Pan are hard to find!

IT'S NEW I TELLS YA!

Then I found this

qz.com/1230638/omnisexual-gynosexual-demisexual-whats-behind-the-surge-in-sexual-identities/

It starts well In 1976, the French philosopher Michel Foucault made the meticulously researched case that sexuality is a social construct used as a form of control. but quickly descends to lists and complaints that the lists are not wholly inclusive!

nauticant · 15/02/2019 09:39

If there's one thing that really annoys me about how the ideology plays out it's bisexuals saying to lesbians "you're a bigot if you're not pansexual like me" to force them to sleep with men. I've heard it from both male and female bisexuals and I'm getting fucking sick of it.

Bowlofbabelfish · 15/02/2019 09:39

But gender is a construct.

It’s like basing your sexuality on what kind of breakfast cereal people like.

Calvinsmam · 15/02/2019 09:40

Bisexual means that you fancy people of both sexes.
As there are only two sexes that covers everyone’s.

Pansexual means you fancy all genders. So everyone.

Both mean you can (not that you do) fancy anyone.
They mean exactly the same thing.

Calvinsmam · 15/02/2019 09:42

a bi person might find tall guys attractive, and short girls

This is based on nothing.
That’s not what bi means.

The ideology sleeps on a throne of liiiiiiiiies.

Metaplasia · 15/02/2019 09:43

Yes I agree there are only two sexes but to me being pan includes trans people and folk who roll about in the middle somewhere. Bi means only actual men or women. Does that make any sense?

beenandgoneandbackagain · 15/02/2019 09:43

What about the "saposexuals" . They're really special and attracted to people because of the way they think (as if this is something brand new and special and only thought of in the last 10 years . . . .)

PlumPorter · 15/02/2019 09:44

As I understand it bisexual means being attracted to both men and women (bi = two), pan (many) means being attracted to any gender.

Otherwise known as men and women... Wink

I know someone who describes themselves as 'pansexual'. What it means in reality was that she dates men - some of whom are very gender conforming and some of whom aren't at all. She has snogged a couple of girls. Oh and she has blue hair.

So, just like straight female me at the same age... Grin

I can't take anyone who describes themselves as 'pansexual' seriously tbh.

Calvinsmam · 15/02/2019 09:46

Yes I agree there are only two sexes but to me being pan includes trans people and folk who roll about in the middle somewhere. Bi means only actual men or women. Does that make any sense?

No, because those people are still covered by the two sex description.
There’s nothing in the description on bisexual that says you don’t fancy trans people.
