Great that the police are investigating themselves - fingers crossed.

This is terrifying.

The officer should assess the report. If there’s no crime, the officer should close the report there and then.
To actually call someone up and tell him to watch what they’re thinking/saying/tweeting after it’s been determined that no crime has been committed - WHY?

Iggypoppie · 04/02/2019 13:41

Just to say this is also on the Harry the Owl thread if anyone wants to continue the conversation there.

OP posts:
Bowlofbabelfish · 04/02/2019 13:42

I should say tell them. Not him :) speaking generally, but of course her in this case.

Juells · 04/02/2019 14:06

It does occur to me that anyone could phone up and claim to be a police officer just to frighten GC from speaking out.

If it happens to anyone in future, would it be a good idea to ask for the officer's name and station so you can check the number yourself and ring back? Just as you would if someone rang purporting to be from your bank.

Bowlofbabelfish · 04/02/2019 14:09

Ask for their number (officer number, not phone) too.

Bowlofbabelfish · 04/02/2019 14:46

Ask for their number (officer number, not phone) too.

ProfessoressWoland · 04/02/2019 15:03

Will it be recorded as a hate incident?
The statistics on hate crimes and incidents against trans people are looking more and more meaningless by the day.

KatherinaMinola · 04/02/2019 15:19

That was my first thought too.

Popchyk · 04/02/2019 15:28

From Suffolk Police:

twitter.com/SuffolkPolice/status/1092411634763661314

"Hi Margaret, we had a number of people contact us on social media about the comments made online. A follow-up call was made for no other reason than to raise awareness of the complaints. Kind regards, Web Team".

misscockerspaniel · 04/02/2019 15:30

Although the Suffolk Police has responded, who is to say that the police officer (if genuine) wasn't from, say, Humberside Police?

VickyEadie · 04/02/2019 15:32

So, the police tweet 'explaining' themselves to Margaret suggests that they routinely ring anyone who's had a complaint made against them to "raise awareness".

Not threatening at all, is it?

Popchyk · 04/02/2019 15:35

I wonder at what point the police are going to twig that the police are being used in order to harass people.

The police have basically just admitted that the police will speak to anyone that the transgender lobby tells them to speak to, despite no crime being committed.

This incentivises the transgender lobby to work together to target individuals and the police has stated that they will always assist in this.

Just as an aside, I'm not sure that Twitter is a great medium for the police to make comments to individuals about cases that may or may not be ongoing.

nauticant · 04/02/2019 15:36

That's not sinister. Not sinister at all.

I am very assured that any other "I'm offended by this on the Internet" would have been handled by Suffolk Police in exactly the same way.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 04/02/2019 15:41

"Raise awareness of the complaints" Hmm

Is that a routine service offered by the police then?

In which case, I saw an advert about how some BAME groups are more at risk at heart disease and I was offended to be reminded of this stark reality. So despite it being a true and lawful thing to say, if I report this to the police, will they call up the charity to complain? Because my protected characteristic of race now makes this a hate incident as I, the beholder of the protected characteristic, have Perceived Offence.

I would have used an example that used sex as a basis of the complaint but it's not counted as a hate crime. Of course.

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 04/02/2019 15:55

I want to scream

NothingOnTellyAgain · 04/02/2019 16:00

WTF

And these are the people that trans activits like to claim commit real life physical violence against trans people.

YY middle aged women who enjoy writing reflective blogs are always at the front of the queue when there's a bit of violence to be committed.

Women in general are well known for this.

Floisme · 04/02/2019 16:01

I was kind of hoping this would turn out to be a TRA hoaxer inspired by the Harry the Owl case. The fact that the police not only did this but don't even seem embarrassed about admitting it, is just a bit too much for me to process right now.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 04/02/2019 16:01

Also
the police do this
and at the same time
say they don;t have time for eg historic csa, rape where victim in known to assailant, viewing images of csa etc etc

depressing

merrymouse · 04/02/2019 16:15

It doesn’t make sense and undermines the concept of ‘hate crime. Causing offence does not constitute a hate crime. The motivation needs to be hatred and/or prejudice, not just making a political or scientific argument.

LangCleg · 04/02/2019 16:45

At what point will anyone in authority acknowledge that the police are being used as agents of coercive control?

Gametedescrition · 04/02/2019 16:45

At the same time as the Education Minister is trying to convince students that facts are not a crime.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 04/02/2019 18:06

merry - worse

this case and that bloke there is no suggestion a crime has been committed

police are warning people off becasue they are being told to
even though there is no crime

compare that to their often useless response to actual crime

most oppressed of all my arse

how many other minority groups can get the cops making visits for a word over non criminal, factual statements

women in the public eye get threatened with actual violence by persistent scary men adn cops say yeah we have to wait til he actually attacks you etc

women being killed in the news every week becasue police turned blind eye / ignired multiple reports / didnt bother when men broke non molestation orders and so on

it's outrageous

and shows who is in charge
