Shocking - free speech is a joke in this country

OP posts:

the harrop tweeting that he’s going to visit her husbands church

Tweeting that and pointedly talking about golf. With a person who has in the past attacked someone with a golf club and hit them in the head with it.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/02/2019 13:07

Listen, fair play to Suffolk Police for making a public apology

Although it is hidden in a tweet, and not on their website so not entirely public...

TheUnforgiven · 05/02/2019 13:11

During the equal marriage debate, did any lesbian or gay people report tweets/ opinions/ articles saying being gay is a choice or unnatural, or marriage is for one man/ one woman etc to the police?

Denies gay people's existence.
Denies gay people's equal rights
Contributes to a heteronormative society which provably contributes to mental health issues and sometimes suicide in some gay people.
Offensive and upsetting to lesbian and gay people
Still a valid opinion
Clearly not a hate crime
Clearly not inciting violence against individuals

What would have happened if we had reported this sort of statement, as lesbians?

TheUnforgiven · 05/02/2019 13:13

By 'we as lesbians' I meant 'those of us who are lesbians,' not that everyone here is a lesbian...

TimeLady · 05/02/2019 13:30

Seems they learned their lesson from the way the Humberside debacle was handled. I think their apology is a positive sign.

littlbrowndog · 05/02/2019 13:32

You would have been told to clear off and stop wasting polices time

Needmoresleep · 05/02/2019 13:38

Quite a few policy reviews seemingly going on:

Suffolk Police
GC for GPs
Girl Guides

I wonder if a combination of public reaction and the spate of good articles in The Times is causing public/third sector bodies to review the training/policy advice they have been getting from the Stonewall diaspora.

Guardian/BBC next? No hope

Stonewall changed focus/purpose/culture in 2015 when it added the T. Its taking a while but I think people are catching on.

ChattyLion · 05/02/2019 13:41

Phew thank goodness.

UndersAndOvers · 05/02/2019 13:43

I didn't know GG were having a rethink - is there a thread about that?

ChattyLion · 05/02/2019 13:44

Also reviewing: the Royal College of GPs

Needmoresleep · 05/02/2019 13:49

Not really clear what they are doing, though clearly having a bit of a think:

Prisons too:

FairPlayForWomen
‏**@fairplaywomen**

  1. Today the @MoJ has responded to the @Fairplaywomen petition calling for a review of eligibility criteria for female prisons & for consultation with women's groups. Confirmation that female prisoner needs will inform policy change.
  2. In 2017 @fairplaywomen was a lone voice speaking for female inmates. We were condemned and ridiculed for speaking. Our questions were ignored. But we persisted and now female inmates have their own champions in place fighting their corner.
  3. The Equality Impact Assessment for current trans prison policy didn't even mention the obvious and specific risks to female inmates on the grounds of their protected characteristics of sex or pregnancy. This was unacceptable & now that error will be corrected.
MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 05/02/2019 14:43

James Kirkup has written about Maggie:

blogs.spectator.co.uk/2019/02/why-are-the-police-stopping-a-74-year-old-tweeting-about-transgenderism/?fbclid=IwAR2vcBc4092gz7kGGeVdKXg6js5n6hDhcKkYsKauctE84BkxjEnDqxR33hc

And I also saw it in the Daily Mail.

TimeLady · 05/02/2019 14:52

James added this update:

UPDATE:
Shortly after this piece was published, Suffolk Police sent me a statement effectively admitting that they made a mistake by calling Mrs Nelson. A Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said:

“We accept we made a misjudgement in following up a complaint regarding the blog. As a result of this we will be reviewing our procedures for dealing with such matters. We are sorry for any distress we may have caused in the way this issue was dealt with, and have been in contact with the woman who wrote the blog to apologise.”

Which is, I suppose, a good thing and the force should be commended for admitting its mistake and apologising. But there are still questions that remain unanswered. One of them: why on earth did anyone ever think that this was the right thing to do in the first place?

Clever to pitch this piece as a freedom of speech/thought issue, considering the btl views of the usual Spectator commentators.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 05/02/2019 14:55

Here's the Daily Mail piece

NicoAndTheNiners · 05/02/2019 14:58

Well rather than telling the original blogger that complaints have been made why don't they just tell the complainants that no crime has been committed? and to fuck off

Why are the police so bloody stupid?

I'm quite offended that trans activists are campaigning to have the word "woman" removed from maternity leaflets at my local hospital. If I told the local police that I'm offended will they ring the trans activists and tell them? I doubt it, even though woman is a protected characteristic.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/02/2019 15:02

You could always give it a try

Needmoresleep · 05/02/2019 15:02

Here's the Daily Mail piece

And no Daily Mail sad-face. Well done Maggie!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/02/2019 15:06

I love a good long horse faced sad photo. Like the one of the person who was asked for their passport details again because it was for a man and they had decided they were female. I believe they also had a bra padded with something other than boobage and got very upset (possibly hysterical). They were wearing an offensive T-shirt on the pic too. Ho hum.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/02/2019 15:12

There have been a few heavy handed incidents. Fanny Cradock (not that one) on twitter was detained (she has a baby and other small kids) and her laptop taken. Scary stuff.

How does GDPR factor into this. For what purpose are the police processing personal data?

2019StandingforWomen · 05/02/2019 15:27

SharkBastard that's absolutely horrific. Have you spoken to James kirkup about this? Or are you not allowed to at the moment?
