The thread I wrote about attending Posie Parker's panel on gender identity and social media has attracted a lot of attention, and I thought it might be good to establish more of a dialogue. Ask me anything!

Also, to get this one out of the way: my babysitting rates are £15/hr, plus flights, and I'll provide a clean CRB check 😂

It facilitates how you use twitter? So you only like to read things from people who agree with your point of view? I bet coming out of your echo chamber is a bit of a shock...

clairestandish · 30/01/2019 18:19

But what IS a woman?

Someone says ‘I identify as a woman’ so they are identifying as somebody who identifies as a woman Confused

If someone ‘identifies’ as a woman then there needs to be a definition of what they are identifying as. How do you define what ‘woman’ is?

SophoclesTheFox · 30/01/2019 18:19

So what you are saying is that women should give up swathes of their sex based protections, so that some males can 'feel good' and their 'gender euphoria' be validated? And you can't see anything misogynistic about that at all?

Good question.

Gets to the heart of the question of whether trans activism is in fact a men’s sexual rights movement (I’ve got to the stage where I can’t even be bothered to pretend to pose that as a question 😬)

Bluestitch · 30/01/2019 18:19

Nope. Karen White is an abusive, rapist, paedophile PoS, but yes, she's a woman if she says she is. Doesn't mean she isn't awful.

So in court, should the woman violated by KW's penis, likely overpowered because he is male, risking pregnancy because he is male, be required to refer to KW as a woman, use female pronouns?

MrsScamander · 30/01/2019 18:20

It's no good sharing links to your Twitter thread, when you've probably TERF blocked most of the posters on here who use Twitter 😏

Bowlofbabelfish · 30/01/2019 18:21

She claims to be trans, so - she's a violent woman. The important point though is that she's violent

I would say the important thing was that they were larger than their victims, and used the male sexual organ, the penis, to rape them.

As the crime of rape requires a penis, I think that is very, very much the point.

lisamuggeridge · 30/01/2019 18:21

lso who was the bat to threaten? Given you want access to spaces of safety from male violence- how does a baseball bat do anything but say you pose risk in those spaces?

So your in order to see yourself as a woman, you need the unpaid labour that keeps the planet going ignored, you need women to not discuss the way their bioogy is central to inequality, you need us to pretend male violence is not what our systems are shaped around, and you believe that even though you are demanding access to spaces of safety from male violence, with a male body, and a bat, that your identity is what we should be discussing? All we have to do to see what you are saying as logical, is not discuss the structure of gobal inequality, not discuss the role of biology in that, not discuss social policy systems which shape that, not discuss male violence as related to sex and not internal gender and you have a bat as your feminist symbol because...lol That is kind of funny. Am going to be honest I dot think you are asking those things in good faith, I think you are trolling women. Thats what I think. Either way why would women do that and ignore all htose things to manage your internal identity? Surely your gender dysphoria is recognition your body is male?

lisamuggeridge · 30/01/2019 18:23

Liz is the basis of your argument that women should prioritise your internal feelings over their own materia reality and that your internal identity should override their ability to assess risk you pose? because you say so?

AnneHutchinson · 30/01/2019 18:23

So you agree that the people formerly known as women can gather in spaces without the people formerly known as men provided we all rename ourselves?

If the DV refuges women built changed their names to DV shelters for Womyn, where Womyn meant people of the class that produced la ge gametes, would you then not insist on entrance? If the people who were formerly known as women replicated the decades-long effort they put in to creating sport for themselves and rebuilt teams and leagues and competitions for womyn, would you not insist on your right to join?

Is that the solution to this rights conflict: that women rename themselves and re-build, re-create and re-organise everything we already built and created and organised, just under a new name?

Sort of like a resettlement effort, after colonisation?

R0wantrees · 30/01/2019 18:24

I follow the opinions of many different trans women on social media, and a common complaint from trans women is how upsetting it is for the media to besmirch transgender people as predators. I agree that this is horrible and unjust, but it seems obvious that to prevent the gender dysphoria community from being smeared - they need to gatekeep their community, and keep a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria.

Identifying male pattern sexual abuse and violence is important.
Some transpeople are male.

It is very common for males to respond NAMALT (not all men are like that) when focus is on male violence, sexual abuse etc

glitchliz · 30/01/2019 18:26

I think you're hopelessly naive to think that the picture you posted could be interpreted in any other way than a threat of violence. At least, that's the charitable and kind interpretation of your intentions.

Flowers

When you know the context of the Degenderettes, of that museum display of baseball bats similarly decorated that were used to threaten violence against women.... it's so very naive to come to another conclusion."

I'm actually intimately familiar with the Degenderettes, and the purpose of that group is twofold:

1.) Agitprop performance art protests to draw attention to trans* issues
2.) Provide protection for trans people at protests, marches and rallies

There's a good description of the various exhibits at the SF exhibit here:

Who is the bat by the bed intended to protect you from?

SophoclesTheFox · 30/01/2019 18:27

What do you think of the parts of feminist analysis that analyse the power of naming things (like, say, “what is a woman”), and how that has historically been completely gendered with men retaining the power of naming things, while women are relegated to the role of Things That Men Name?

Because there lies your answer of why women are so terrifically pissed off when males attempt to tell us that they know what we are more than we do. You tap into a mother lode (ha!) of feminist ire.

I suspect that you’ve been completely oblivious to this, but in the spirit of your extremely pedagogic thread, I’m happy to help out here 🙂

glitchliz · 30/01/2019 18:27

So you agree that the people formerly known as women can gather in spaces without the people formerly known as men provided we all rename ourselves?

Well, that particular group would include men and non-binary people, because trans men exist as a group and some of them have the ability to bear children, so...

OP posts:
PurpleCrowbar · 30/01/2019 18:28

Who might the Degenderettes be protecting you from?

lisamuggeridge · 30/01/2019 18:28

''Who is the bat by the bed intended to protect you from?'' Evil TERFS in domstic abuse shelters and gatekeeping access to their bodies, spaces, and protecting themselves from male violence. You need a bat to show lesbians, dv survivors and rape victims that you are a woman and they have to do as you say and ignore reaity in favour of what is going on in your head. THey wont be scared enough otherwise.

Datun · 30/01/2019 18:28

"So you’d be happy if we came up with a new name and had a movement just for us and meetings that centred us and didn’t include you?"

Of course! That's the same reason why I don't go to e.g. meetings for trans women of colour, or gay men, or any other group that isn't for me. I have no interest in taking up space in those discussions.

Liz, that's some very confused thinking going on there.

Are you seriously telling me that we are changing laws, protocols and customs, because of the arrangements of letters in a word?

That if we change the word to have, say, a double N at the end, that's it?

Womenn's sports/Refuges/prisons/rights/changing rooms/toilets ?

AssassinatedBeauty · 30/01/2019 18:29

Ah, so threatening violence against women is ok if it's performance art?

Who do trans people need protecting from at protests/marches/rallies? Is it gender critical women?

glitchliz · 30/01/2019 18:29

Who is the bat by the bed intended to protect you from?

People who'd wish me harm. I don't want to go into further detail, at the risk of triggering people with SA histories.

OP posts:
lisamuggeridge · 30/01/2019 18:30

Liz, I have a question. Do you believe your gender dysphoria can be eased without forcibly overriding womens boundaries and safety? Can your gender dysphoria only be eased if women are forced to obey you and their ability to say I am afraid of you is forcibly suppressed by law and intimidation through activism?

Bowlofbabelfish · 30/01/2019 18:30

2.) Provide protection for trans people at protests, marches and rallies

Sorry, protection from violent women? The weapons are clearly intended, the blood soaked t shirts are clearly aimed at women.

Are you saying transwomen need physical protection from women? Because if so I am baffled. They want access to women’s spaces - if women are the source of the violence they fear then why want this?

SophoclesTheFox · 30/01/2019 18:30

What did you think of the “I punch T*RFS” blood stained T-shirt?

Legitimate expression of self? Offensive? Same thing as an ‘adult human female’ T-shirt?

AnneHutchinson · 30/01/2019 18:30

Yes, males flat out refuse to see male violence as a system of social control in which girls learn at an early age to circumscribe their lives in a way boys do not, and how that circumscription affects the course and freedoms of an entire life.

Whereas women know exactly how that’s played out in their lives.

And transwomen, as evidenced by this thread, fall on the side of males in this split.

OdeToDiazepam · 30/01/2019 18:30

Do you really feel it's right to justify the bat as a trans symbol because trans people suffer a 'disproportionate amount of violence'

When two women a week are killed by domestic violence.

Think about that please

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 30/01/2019 18:31

Do you realise people are worried?
