Prominent New Zealand lawyer calls GC women 'anti trans whores'.

I have never started a thread on mumsnet but I am so angry I have had to as I can't see it mentioned in other threads and it is my (small) stand.

Earlier today Steph Dyhrberg, a prominent lawyer in NZ , a self proclaimed 'stroppy feminist' and the 2018 WELLINGTONIAN OF THE YEAR, in a now deleted tweet, called GC women 'anti trans whores'. She subsequently apologised for the word, saying 'it was demeaning to sex workers'.

I am so disappointed? enraged? consumed by this - a woman calls another woman a whore because she believes sex is a definable biological category. It is utterly awful.

I still feel a sense of shock I guess that we have ended up here.

Steph sounds like a lovely person......

HamiltonCork · 26/01/2019 11:24

She sounds like an arse.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 26/01/2019 11:25

Fuck off, Steph, and take your pro-TRA bullshit with you.

AngryAttackKittens · 26/01/2019 11:25

Because nothing says feminist like using insults designed to weaponize the idea that women's greatest value lies in our chastity against us.

When anyone defaults to language like that when they're angry they're telling you something about themselves, and you should believe them.

HamiltonCork · 26/01/2019 11:28

Well I guess if Steph wants to become an unemployable prominent lawyer she is going the right way about it.

AngryAttackKittens · 26/01/2019 11:30

It's amazing how many people don't seem to fully grasp the fact that Twitter is a public site where everyone can read what you write, not just the people who agree with you, and including the people who may at some point decide whether or not they want to offer a job to someone who calls people they disagree with "whores".

BettyDuMonde · 26/01/2019 11:30

I’m guessing the ‘now deleted’ means actual feminists served her her own twitter arse on a twitter plate?

Cwenthryth · 26/01/2019 11:32

Steph’s twitter bio says they’re a partner so I guess employ themselves. They might be in breach of professional codes of conduct though I’m guessing.

Steph might identify as a feminist, but that statement is not in any way a feminist thing to say.

LOL

wheels on fire, rolling down the road...…

Crack on Steph. We couldn't ask for better evidence of extremist batshit likely to make any normal person think wtf are these people on?

AngryAttackKittens · 26/01/2019 11:35

I'd think even the most politically apathetic person might wonder why a supposed feminist is calling other women whores.

Popchyk · 26/01/2019 11:35

Steph has apologised.

"I apologise for the word because it was demeaning to sex workers".

SimplySteve · 26/01/2019 11:35

Isn't Steph wonderful... Hmm

These twats need to stop labelling people. They are people ffs, not pawns to be used to fight a war. Recent history crystallises this.

Act like a twat, get treated like one.

Trinity1976 · 26/01/2019 11:37

Steph has announced she is taking a break from Twitter to read a book entitled "Growing up feminist in Aotearoa".

Let us all hope she learns something.

Chapter One -Why We Don't Use Misogynistic Insults When Women Say Things We Don't Like

LangCleg · 26/01/2019 11:39

Good goddess.

Tipmeover · 26/01/2019 11:46

Yes exactly AAK! She is a lawyer for christ's sake - how on earth did she think she could say this on a public forum?

How could she believe she is a feminist and yet her first instinct is to call women who disagree with her 'whores'

TornFromTheInside · 26/01/2019 11:47

Not only the use of that word, but she subsequently then claims it's demeaning to sex workers, which implies she thinks even less of GC women.
Disgusting for anybody to use that term, but unsurprising.
For a lawyer to use it, in public, is utterly idiotic. Who would want to be represented by such a bigot, let alone such a stupid one?

AngryAttackKittens · 26/01/2019 12:01

That "demeaning to sex workers" comment was just childish. Apparently she's the Kevin the Teenager of the legal system.

ChewyLouie · 26/01/2019 12:06

A female employment lawyer using the word ‘whore’ to insult biological women who don’t submit to the fallacy of XY=XX. Numpty.
If ‘whores’ are sexual ‘workers’ then I take it NZ pimps ensure their workers have full employment rights. Sick leave, maternity pay, annual leave etc. No? She’s got some work to do there.
Maybe she is an employment lawyer specialising in the support of misogynists only, females are advised to take their cases elsewhere? Who on earth would engage someone with such contempt for biological women!

AngryAttackKittens · 26/01/2019 12:10

Also, if you consider yourself a "sex positive" sort of person who thinks "sex work is work" etc why would you use "whore" as an insult? If it's just a job like any other job, why would you throw it at someone who you're angry with? Methinks that our friend gave away more about her true attitude than she intended to there.

ReflectentMonatomism · 26/01/2019 12:15

Being a prominent lawyer in NZ isn’t even like being big in Birmingham. The West Midlands has a million more people and London down the road. It’s hardly yer teemin’ metropolitan intellectual melting pot.

Oxytocindeficient · 26/01/2019 12:18

fuck off Steph. Go listen to some Whina Cooper. When men told her she couldn’t speak, in her words and in front of thousands at a hui:
‘ I lifted my skirts and reminded them where they all came from’

Fuck you Steph and your woman hating views, from an indigenous woman of Aotearoa.

BrylcreamBeret · 26/01/2019 12:18

popchyk Not really an apology to the intended targets of her vile comment is it?

Oxytocindeficient · 26/01/2019 12:20

Also interested in whether or not she’s broken any professional standards and if she can be reported for this disgusting abusive behaviour.

Datun · 26/01/2019 12:20

Gender critical women are whores (and should take up um knitting). But that's demeaning to sex workers. Why? Does she think sex workers are 'whores'?

I think she wins the prize for managing to insult most women, all at once.
