Prominent New Zealand lawyer calls GC women 'anti trans whores'.

I have never started a thread on mumsnet but I am so angry I have had to as I can't see it mentioned in other threads and it is my (small) stand.

Earlier today Steph Dyhrberg, a prominent lawyer in NZ , a self proclaimed 'stroppy feminist' and the 2018 WELLINGTONIAN OF THE YEAR, in a now deleted tweet, called GC women 'anti trans whores'. She subsequently apologised for the word, saying 'it was demeaning to sex workers'.

I am so disappointed? enraged? consumed by this - a woman calls another woman a whore because she believes sex is a definable biological category. It is utterly awful.

I still feel a sense of shock I guess that we have ended up here.

Can’t be a very good lawyer can she? Can you imagine her in a court room? ‘I don’t agree with what you think so you’re a whore! If you allow the claim to proceed then you will also be a whore your honour!’

ChewyLouie · 26/01/2019 12:21

Spit on Angry, her slavish trans devotion triggered a rant against biological women and in that moment her worst insult was whore. No critique of the GC stance but the word whore to silence people of her own biological class.
She may use the term sex workers but clearly this employment lawyer regards them with contempt.

TornFromTheInside · 26/01/2019 12:31

And what of gender critical men?
Why single out women for vitriol?
Because her anger isn't at gender criticism, it's at some other women.

Oxytocindeficient · 26/01/2019 12:33

TornFromTheInside exactly

Popchyk · 26/01/2019 12:33

No, because women who don't bow to the transgender cult are not worthy of an apology. Clearly.

Those remarks are just staggeringly unprofessional, apart from everything else.

Speakup4WomenNZ could consider legal action against Steph of course.

TowelNumber42 · 26/01/2019 12:34

What was she even reacting to in the first place?

TornFromTheInside · 26/01/2019 12:36

I don't think her vitriol was aimed at sex workers, it was other women who disagree with her. When called out, and trying to dig herself out of a hole, she then compounded the situation my making an equally stupid quip about demeaning to sex workers.
She should consider a career in groundwork if she can dig holes that quickly.

Bowlofbabelfish · 26/01/2019 12:39

They’re going to be burning us at the stake in five years aren’t they?

ChewyLouie · 26/01/2019 12:43

Oh dear, don’t spit on Angry 😱 😱
Should have been ‘spot on’ !

TornFromTheInside · 26/01/2019 12:47

Don't joke about it.
Such contempt for GC women will always spill over into violence. Predominantly verbal, but undoubtedly physical in some cases.

Bowlofbabelfish · 26/01/2019 12:52

I’m not joking. I actually feel incredibly pessimistic about all this. I feel it’s a precursor to something very, very unpleasant :(

I do understand that people with 'different' sexualities or gender views are prone to all sorts of physical and verbal attacks - 'queer bashing', 'tranny bashing' etc and it's abhorrent.

It would be equally abhorrent for any group to resort to abuse, verbal or physical just because they hold a certain view on gender / sex. Many of us (myself included) will use slurs against others when frustration or anger gets the better of us. I think largely it's in the realm of 'these threatening TRA's are **', it's certainly not 'trans are...'

We probably should try to rise above idiots of any persuasion and not use verbal abuse!

Like you, I worry that some people just can't stop at that (which is bad enough), but they will turn to physical rage. More worryingly (from a GC standpoint), it'll be males doing that.

We all owe it to each other to keep it civil and never let it get abusive. Easier said than done sometimes, but we have to try.

Yeahnahyeah · 26/01/2019 13:41

bowlofbabelfish me too, it seems to be getting grimmer by the day.

NZ is so oblivious to all this. It's really scary.

Nice to meet a few more Kiwis Smile

frazzled1 · 26/01/2019 13:46

Steph sounds like an interesting lawyer. One not rooted in material reality.

Humans can't change sex, sorry Steph.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 26/01/2019 14:16

Steph's made herself sound a bit of a fool hasn't she? I thought precise use of language was a lawyer's stock in trade. Oh dear Steph......

ChattyLion · 26/01/2019 14:33

What an exemplary handmaiden, out there doing the the dirty work for men.

TowelNumber42 · 26/01/2019 15:36

Looking at her twitter feed I think she speed tweets what she thinks will be virtuous without fully engaging her brain and it bit her on the ass this time.

Given what appears to be an interest in stopping male violence on women maybe this episode will open her eyes to the dangers of allowing any man to say he is a woman and get access to women and sex-based women's rights. Or maybe she doesn't genuinely care about oppression of women, it's just random virtue signalling. The lack of engagement in debate, from a lawyer, suggests it's lack of interest not deeply held beliefs.

An update on NZ Lawyer Steph Dyhrberg. Seems the group she was villifying was from Speak Up for Women

Illyria47 · 28/01/2019 06:20

I read the complaint, good on Speak Up for Women for going ahead with this action. SUFW has made it crystal clear in in their submissions to the NZ Government MP's that they are not anti trans gender people but wish for a wider and fuller discussion around the self-ID proposal in its current form. If a male can self-identify without the need for any physical change in their appearance then surely that opens the door for predatory males to access hitherto protected female only spaces. Why can't the lawmakers see this when every woman with half a brain in her head here in NZ and in the UK saw this immediately. Where is the risk assessment? Why is the intellectual argument seemingly only on the gender critical side and emotional hysteria on the trans-activist/handmaidens side. Why the hostility from women such as Steph Dyhrberg, Louise Wall, Jan Logie who actually work for women in the main in a very positive way, just for asking some questions. I really cannot understand it.
It is telling there is no Speak Up for Men or Men's Place UK. Men are in no danger from this legislation. I wonder what the response would be if such legislation did impact men in the same way as for women. Would men who spoke up be vilified as we women are or would they be lauded for being brave? I wonder.

Praguemum · 28/01/2019 06:22

I wouldn't stress. We are in NZ and Kiwis are a pragmatic bunch. Most people think this woman is a nutter.

Oxytocindeficient · 28/01/2019 07:17

Good, glad to see a complaint had been made. Thanks for updating. I’m more horrified now I know she is speaking at that event, alongside the PM?! How terrible

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 28/01/2019 07:47

Glad a complaint is being made too. I never understand these "Feminists" who hate women, there are so many of them.

Katispancuddly · 28/01/2019 08:36

Partner in a "boutique employment firm"
😂🤣😂

Seriously though, she joins my Haddock list of people I can't believe have professional jobs.

But hopefully standing for women NZ will get loads of publicity over this. Highlighting the issues with self I.D.

At some point you'd think the TRAs would realise that their witch hunting antics really make them look terrible.

But at the tender age of 50 (?ish) she's now realised it's not okay to be rude, even if the people you're arguing with are "Nazi scum" aka women you don't agree with.

She's now crying cos someone was mean back. At least it's not threats of burning, rape, stabbing, punching. You know. Like your male allies dish out.
