I have changed perspective a lot in the past few years regarding purity. I realise that I was pretending to see things I didn't see and pretending to not see things I did see in order to be nice, inclusive, right-on and politically correct. I used to be quite dismissive of certain concerns and give more weight to others in order to counteract social inequality where some groups are privileged and others are disadvantaged, in order to be progressive.
However the truth is that privileged people, although they naturally have a massive blind spot to disadvantage, can be very decent people - not having to fight tooth and nail for survival brings the freedom to let moral principles guide their actions. Disadvantaged, oppressed and marginalised people are often hard to handle, unpredictable and lash out unexpectedly because they easily feel threatened and unsafe having had lived experience of dependency, betrayal, indignity and disrespect.
Maybe its since the Brexit referendem I think too much labelling and not enough listening goes on, so now when swathes of people are labelled as no more that 'racist' or 'bigoted' it just doesn't have the same ring it used to. It no longer means 'there is nothing of value this person has to say' instead it can sounds like the person saying it is being a bit lazy and controlling.
