This whole hate speech/incident law is completely out of control. This is sinister.

I can understand them feeling the need to do something in the light of the loss of a colleague, but they need to look hard at the quality of the training and guidelines they are using. They are not serving them well.

OlennasWimple · 25/01/2019 16:43

Presumably the Commisioner's reference to "national guidelines" means the document written by Mermaids and issued by the National Police Chiefs Council?

In which case, perhaps someone with more than half a brain cell could review it urgently and consider whether they really really intended this operational response to a report of hurty feelz where everyone is clear that there is no actual crime being committed

Was Mermaids Charity involved as well as Stonewall?

www.cps.gov.uk/hate-crime
"There is no legal definition of hostility so we use the everyday understanding of the word which includes ill-will, spite, contempt, prejudice, unfriendliness, antagonism, resentment and dislike."

You have been warned. You will be friendly to everybody at all times. No boundaries.

R0wantrees · 25/01/2019 17:54

The term 'hate crime' can be used to describe a range of criminal behaviour where the perpetrator is motivated by hostility or demonstrates hostility towards the victim's disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or transgender identity.

There has to be a crime first before the potential aggrevating factors have relevence.

LangCleg · 25/01/2019 18:19

This Full Fact article written in the wake of someone reporting an Amber Rudd speech as a hate incident to the police, explains the police procedure:

fullfact.org/crime/hate-incidents-arent-same-hate-crimes/

It still doesn't get to grips with the central issues, though: if there is no other way to categorise other than perception of complainant, it's an open invitation to vexatious people; if the statistics do not remove vexatious reports, they do not accurately measure hate incidents in the UK.

FloralBunting · 25/01/2019 18:22

Big up the women! Lol, cheers 'arry!

thenightsky · 25/01/2019 18:31

being reported on Look North now!

thenightsky · 25/01/2019 18:32

And Harry is wearing his Man, Adult Human Male t-shirt! Grin

HumberElla · 25/01/2019 18:42

Go Harry!

Macareaux · 25/01/2019 19:02

So have I got this right? If I am 'unfriendly' to a trans identified person I can be accused of a hate incident because transgender status is one of the grounds for hate incidents, but if anyone is unfriendly to me the police will not give a fig because I am a mere woman and sex is not a ground for hate incidents.

So, as anyone can claim, with no dissent or rebuke, to be trans and no modifications to one's body or appearance are necessary to validate it, I can only conclude that for my own protection I need to declare myself to be transgender forthwith.

thenightsky · 25/01/2019 19:10

Yes... its like a star trek style deflector shield perhaps?

Good to clarify that because all this talk of having your thinking checked is moving goalposts to my mind.

Interestingly Look North ran the feature early in the programme but didn't read out any viewer comments on the piece at the end.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 25/01/2019 19:38

Hey, HarryTheOwl! Good for you. Keep speaking up.

'Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers said: "What on earth are the police doing investigating if no crime has been committed? Have they not got better things to do than acting as thought police?"

Indeed but we live in Humpty Dumpty times where the meanings of words are also becoming fluid! Confused

JSmitty · 25/01/2019 19:51

CPS Guidelines flagged above mention a person's "birth gender."

This cancer needs some industrial grade radiation therapy.

MP Martin Vickers is a Conservative (& Brexiteer)

It would be interesting to also hear from the MPs on the other side of the Humber, Hull:

The policies of CPS and Bench have been re-written.

There are a lot of lawyers & law firms involved with advocating for trans rights, Stonewall, TELI etc

And having just ranted at myself, I've checked and it turns out that I'm right:

'Gender' and 'Genitals' have different roots: The former is from genre/gendre meaning type or category, and the latter from gignos meaning birth/delivery.

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/01/2019 20:30

Well, that's odd. I just watched 'Look North' on catch up and the piece about Harry doesn't seem to bebthere Confused
