An apology to trans and non-binary people
Posted on 22nd January 2019 at 12:48 pm.

Nottingham Women’s Centre is open to trans women and some non-binary people but we don’t always get things right. We used language that was excluding and othering towards trans, including non-binary people, when asking people to categorise their gender in a recent consultation exercise. We used the terms ‘female from birth’ and ‘male from birth’ and since people are not given a choice about their gender when they are born this is not an appropriate category to use for anyone. We regret not checking this wording, despite the ready availability of best practice guidance and our commitment to consult the trans community on matters that affect them. We would like to thank Notts Trans Hub for bringing this to our attention and giving us a chance to work with them and others to improve our understanding of appropriate language and how to make the Centre more welcoming to trans women including some non-binary people.

(Beginning to think it would be good to have a thread where we can nominate the most bizzare language challenging statement about trans - a bit like pseuds corner or whatever that column is called)

Reprogrammed?

Makes no sense IRL.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/01/2019 20:28

Was Nottingham women's centre not the place that was going to have that really creepy sex workshop run by an even creeper bloke?

Knicknackpaddyflak · 22/01/2019 20:32

Translation: we've had a lot of moaning, so we're changing our language to other and exclude the people who were originally our core brief. Please stop threatening and harassing us.

Fgs, you're a women's centre. Stop erasing women.

KataraJean · 22/01/2019 20:32
Hmm

Male and female are sex terms not gender

Or is this changing too

ILoveMaxiBondi · 22/01/2019 20:56

More people who don’t know the difference between sex and gender. Hmm how are people still mixing the two up?

thecraftyfox · 22/01/2019 21:03

If you are describing yourself as female from birth that indicates you are errr a female who knows she is female. This would imply that women are being told how they may refer to themselves again. I bet they start to use ciswoman as a result of the complaint

Bowlofbabelfish · 22/01/2019 21:17

It’s pretty easy, Nottingham;

Sex: M/F

Tick one.

AspieAndProud · 22/01/2019 21:21

‘Female from birth’ includes two words that are entirely redundant.

Am no, TRAs, one of them isn’t ‘female’.

AngryAttackKittens · 22/01/2019 21:35

"Please don't hurt us", basically.

NoseringGirl · 22/01/2019 21:53

I don't agree with them having to make this statement but I also wouldn't want to describe myself as of the female gender at birth. My sex was (and still is) female. That's me being picky about sex and gender though.
So shit that women's organisations are having to fall over themselves to make every detail about including trans/non binary people rather than focusing their efforts and resources on women.

NotMeOhNo · 22/01/2019 21:57

Well don't categorise their bloody gender then. What does it matter what colour jellybaby their personality fits into?
Their sex on the other hand is important.

PhoenixBuchanan · 22/01/2019 22:01

"Some non-binary people" - the mental gymnastics that must be required to arrive at this position! Hmm Confused

WokeNotBloke · 22/01/2019 22:04

I literally don’t get it. I wasn’t given any choice about my race, place or date of birth either. Maybe they can’t ask about that either ☹️😳

ChewyLouie · 22/01/2019 22:05

Grovel.... sorry.....grovel.
They need to woman up or is this a funding issue and purposefully ott to demonstrate the pressure that had been placed on them ? How about focusing on making the centre more welcoming to biological women.

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/01/2019 22:09

Was Nottingham women's centre not the place that was going to have that really creepy sex workshop run by an even creeper bloke?

I was just thinking that!

NothingOnTellyAgain · 22/01/2019 22:11

So it's the non men centre?

Also ss an aside Wtf does non binary transwoman mean?

NoseringGirl · 22/01/2019 22:16

Also ss an aside Wtf does non binary transwoman mean?

I've been trying to work this out since I first saw someone who was born female describe themselves as non binary trans masc. Cant get my head around it!

Lexilooo · 22/01/2019 22:23

How about "were you born with a penis and/or testicles?"

Knicknackpaddyflak · 22/01/2019 22:25

If they have a clientele kicking off at them about being allowed to ask women their sex at birth (ffs, that's stupid enough), then you have to wonder if the centre is allowed to talk about, hold groups for, support with or share information regarding anything else to do with female, woman or biology, all of which are seen as excluding and othering in more extremist circles. In which case the cause is long since lost about their being a women's centre. Unless they just do this bit of their brief in secret.

"Listen very carefully, I will say this only once. Advice for perimenopausal women is in the plain brown wrapper hidden inside a copy of the Pink News on the top shelf. This message will self destruct in five seconds. We were never here."

Lexilooo · 22/01/2019 22:26

Followed by "if yes do you still have a penis and/or testicles?"

Because after all that is what counts. They don't care about who wears dresses or lipstick. They don't want to have to admit people who might rape their vulnerable clients.

donquixotedelamancha · 22/01/2019 22:33

Wtf does non binary transwoman mean?

It means they have blue hair. They are also more oppressed than you so be nice.

How about "were you born with a penis and/or testicles?

How about: 'Are you male or female?'. It's worked surprisingly well for a long time.

They don't want to have to admit people who might rape their vulnerable clients.

Read the OP- they don't feel that's an issue. They have more important stuff going on- a man was offended.

PlectrumElectrum · 22/01/2019 22:33

Here's an ironic piece of info - the transwomen inclusion in refuges experiment started in a refuge in Nottingham way back in 1998, pushed (I'm fairly certain) by Press for Change.

adultFemaleElf · 22/01/2019 22:41

You can only be female from birth.
There is no other route to being female, as female denotes the sex you were observed to be at birth. And you can’t change sex. Everyone knows this.

The tone of that statement reminds me of a hostage video statement where the gun pointed at the captive’s head is just out of camera shot. But you know it’s there.
