An apology to trans and non-binary people
Posted on 22nd January 2019 at 12:48 pm.

Nottingham Women’s Centre is open to trans women and some non-binary people but we don’t always get things right. We used language that was excluding and othering towards trans, including non-binary people, when asking people to categorise their gender in a recent consultation exercise. We used the terms ‘female from birth’ and ‘male from birth’ and since people are not given a choice about their gender when they are born this is not an appropriate category to use for anyone. We regret not checking this wording, despite the ready availability of best practice guidance and our commitment to consult the trans community on matters that affect them. We would like to thank Notts Trans Hub for bringing this to our attention and giving us a chance to work with them and others to improve our understanding of appropriate language and how to make the Centre more welcoming to trans women including some non-binary people.

(Beginning to think it would be good to have a thread where we can nominate the most bizzare language challenging statement about trans - a bit like pseuds corner or whatever that column is called)

'Excuse me, you look like a masc non-binary. I'm afraid you'll have to leave.' 'No, I'm femme.' 'You're wearing boy's clothes.' 'I identify as a femme non binary who likes wearing boy's clothes.' 'Oh, that's ok then.'

Crikey, they’re going to have to pay close attention to their jelly baby framework of identity presentation to administer that level of gate keeping!

Ereshkigal · 23/01/2019 16:51

Yes I read an article the other day by someone who self described as a "queer transmasculine femme"

At a certain point isn't the general public going to become immune to the appeals to emotion just because they're so constant and so obviously OTT?

The response to the poll about pronoun badges ar Edinburgh University suggests that even within the average student age bracket, the majority are sick of the guilt trips and over-egged emotionfest.

Sowhatifisaycunt · 23/01/2019 20:19

NWC has silenced me on their fb page ( I’m local and went on a march with them recently). My crime - I commented ‘madness’ on the post and it was deleted. I commented again asking why I was being silenced, and I can no longer make any comments on any of their posts. WTAF? I am a woman whose voice is not welcome by a women’s organisation Shock

I have read this a few times and am trying to figure out what it means... So is it a trans man (so a woman) who is attracted to women, where does the 'femme' bit come in?

Honestly, the mind boggles. These people are going to reach their mid thirties and cringe when they look back.

Ereshkigal · 23/01/2019 20:36

I guess they are a transman who likes to present in a feminine way? Your guess is as good as mine!

Ereshkigal · 23/01/2019 20:37

And yes, a lesbian or bisexual female person.

HerFemaleness · 23/01/2019 21:55

My best guess. They like wearing dresses and makeup but they also perceive themselves to have stereotypically masculine qualities.

If queer theory bollocks were around in Elizabethan times, Liz 1 may have described herself as transmasculine femme, rather than as having the body of a 'weak and feeble' woman but the heart and stomach of a king. Wink

angelwithalariat · 24/01/2019 08:07

The thing is, it doesn't mean anything does it? It's a Women's centre open to anyone who claims to be a woman, therefore to anyone.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 24/01/2019 09:09

fucking hell. if this isn't making someone there think 'what have we become?' then the body snatchers really have won

MiddleAgeRage · 24/01/2019 09:42

queer transmasculine femme

I think this means a natal male who likes to wear pastel lipstick and use women only spaces when in the mood but still enjoys all the fun of their dick?

Sowhatifisaycunt · 24/01/2019 20:10

I’m not normally an activist type but I’m fuckin furious that NWC has silenced me on Facebook.

Please join me in questioning this madness on twitter

I think the trans in "transmasculine" means it's a female person. But who knows!

Now100 · 24/01/2019 22:10

Am also local. Have commented on Facebook too, suspect the deletion won't take long. Last time I went there it was still women only.

SignMeUp · 24/01/2019 23:03

They say this about job vacancy:

This job is open to women only (under the Equality Act 2010, Part 1, Schedule 9)

Ereshkigal · 24/01/2019 23:19

Then to allow self ID MTFs to apply and not men is potentially in breach of the EA. Only males with a GRC are considered to have the protected sex characteristic of female.

Now100 · 24/01/2019 23:38

So my comment was deleted, it looks as if no-one has commented on that post at all. It's a really weird world when people are scared of defending their position.

Sowhatifisaycunt · 25/01/2019 06:48

@now100 try Twitter. I don’t really understand how it works but I don’t think other people can remove your posts?

CarolinePooter · 25/01/2019 10:11

I tweeted too (waves!) and it has not been deleted. I don't think anyone but twitter can delete you.

Sowhatifisaycunt · 25/01/2019 19:14

Waves @CarolinePooter I see you.

HumberElla · 25/01/2019 22:57

Women’s groups like this are clearly being harassed and bullied into doing as they are told by TRAs. These groups are such a valuable resource for women it’s so sad to see them cowering.

Sowhatifisaycunt · 26/01/2019 09:57

It’s bloody infuriating that women’s groups are cowering to misogyny.
