An apology to trans and non-binary people
Posted on 22nd January 2019 at 12:48 pm.

Nottingham Women’s Centre is open to trans women and some non-binary people but we don’t always get things right. We used language that was excluding and othering towards trans, including non-binary people, when asking people to categorise their gender in a recent consultation exercise. We used the terms ‘female from birth’ and ‘male from birth’ and since people are not given a choice about their gender when they are born this is not an appropriate category to use for anyone. We regret not checking this wording, despite the ready availability of best practice guidance and our commitment to consult the trans community on matters that affect them. We would like to thank Notts Trans Hub for bringing this to our attention and giving us a chance to work with them and others to improve our understanding of appropriate language and how to make the Centre more welcoming to trans women including some non-binary people.

(Beginning to think it would be good to have a thread where we can nominate the most bizzare language challenging statement about trans - a bit like pseuds corner or whatever that column is called)

What does it matter what colour jellybaby their personality fits into?

Damn, you mean no one needs to know that I identify as the orange one with dramatic puff sleeves?

That graphic is the gift that keeps on giving from a GC perspective. First there's the implication that only very thin women can be truly feminine, then there's the fact that light purple has a child's hairstyle and that apparently indicates an intermediate stage of femininity, then there's red sideways cap hmm does she need a binder, then orange, who seems to have a bit of a melting issue going on so I don't think these gummy babies are being properly stored, and then I'm curious as to why dark blue appears to be holding some sort of knife cause that's a bit sinister, and then the fact that as the gummies get more masculine they end up being brown.

But hey, progressive, amirite?

stumbledin · 22/01/2019 23:44

I think Nottingham Women's Centre has been quite aggresively pro trans for some time, ironically with an out lesbian as the manager / ce.

The thing that got me was that they subjugated themselves to an organisation that ins't about women, ie the "trans hub".

ie they dont even believe in women.

Can you imagine a polical party apologising because a religious group said they were offended by the fact that a group of people with a shared set of political beliefs were working on behalf of those beliefs??!!!

I dont know if it is an age thing but so many women now seem to act as thought women have no independent rights.

This is their trans inclusion policy www.nottinghamwomenscentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Trans-inclusion-policy-2017.pdf

I think they are also part of a feminist library network. Goodness knows how they classify books by women who are feminists. Presumably they go on the same shelf as facists politics. Sad

By the way I think Brighton Women's Centre is equally aggressive hostile to women and inflict queer politics on their users.

Here is another statement that is effectively contradictory.

Creating a safe place for lesbians and bisexual women, but open to trans women.

Trans men are not allowed.

Every sentence of that "apology" has so obviously been written by "Notts Trans Hub" and the Women's Centre been instructed to post it (or, maybe, die in a fire?). The sternly patronising, thoroughly creepy tone is just like Dr Haddock telling a woman he's been bullying, "I hope this has been a good lesson for you". I feel a bit sick thinking about the exchanges that must have led to this.

FloralBunting · 22/01/2019 23:53

So why would they be excluding 'some' non binary people? What would be the basis for that?

Also that cafe. Lesbian, Bi and any bloke who fancies popping along and utters the magic words is an interesting target demographic.

AngryAttackKittens · 23/01/2019 00:00

So like a normal cafe, but with the non-annoying men removed.

FloralBunting · 23/01/2019 00:26

Yup.

The tone of that statement reminds me of a hostage video statement where the gun pointed at the captive’s head is just out of camera shot. But you know it’s there.

This ⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️

It reminds me of the Cultural Revolution in China where the teachers had to publicly "confess" and be humiliated by the young Red Guards.

It reminds me of 1984...Winston "loved Big Brother"

... Rose McGowan
... Allison Moyet
... Martina (almost)
..... And all the Women's orgs

Did you see the letter from Labour LGBTQ+ condemning Ann Henderson's election to the NEC Equalities Committee Chair for her "appalling" act of retweeting a single WPUK tweet inviting MPs to a meeting?

Appalling, eh? But punching pensioners at Speakers Corner for having the temerity to think they might want to speak is fine.

At a certain point isn't the general public going to become immune to the appeals to emotion just because they're so constant and so obviously OTT?

Bowlofbabelfish · 23/01/2019 03:19

It’s pretty easy, Nottingham;

Sex: M/F

Tick one.

anyone brave enough to join me ?

CallMeSirShotsFired · 23/01/2019 07:43

Why don't they just hold up today's newspaper to a camera and complete the whole hostage look and feel.

Pathetic.

CallMeSirShotsFired · 23/01/2019 07:44

Ha! I posted my comment then read adultFemaleElf's

Sad to think that is the first reaction to this.

Ereshkigal · 23/01/2019 08:42

If you are a woman over 18

A woman? What about the non binaries! Exclusion!

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 23/01/2019 09:14

I think this shows how much things have changed. When they first included trans women in 1998 it was a very different time. But now everything is about self id and they do not acknowledge even the possibility of that being exploited, despite the fact that they also say how the vast majority of violent crime is by men.

littlbrowndog · 23/01/2019 09:36

I would think they need to stop calling themselves a women’s centre now
Just should be a centre for all
Feck that they would centre women in a women’s centre
That is just silly
😠😮

AngryAttackKittens · 23/01/2019 09:38

Isn't "centre" a bit exclusionary to the front, back, and sides?

Beerflavourednipples · 23/01/2019 10:24

since people are not given a choice about their gender when they are born

WTF? Of course people aren't given a frigging choice! You're not given a choice about anything.

Does this mean I can identify as 5ft 10 with blonde hair and green eyes, a perfectly shaped nose and skin that tans beautifully rather than corn beef legs?

Can I identify as a different race? Can I identify has having a different date of birth or being born in a different hosptial (maybe I would identify as being born at the Portland)

HumberElla · 23/01/2019 10:35

I wonder if the centre relies on grant funding? That statement is clearly not written by them, they have been instructed to issue it. I wonder if the trans hub has threatened to tell funders they are not inclusive in order to get them to comply and issue a statement, or risk their revenue support.
We’ve seen other women’s services being made to comply and I suspect it’s because of this.

angelwithalariat · 23/01/2019 15:41

How do they decide which non binary people to exclude? Suppose the wrong kind comes in, do they ask them to leave? What sort of conversation ensues?

HumberElla · 23/01/2019 15:43

The ones who don’t present as femme?
