Most gender critical/female rights party?

duriandurian · 15/01/2019 09:28

I have just realised that if there is an election soon I won't have a clue to whom I should give my vote.
I was thinking Lib Dem because Remain/Second Referendum. But the news articles I have googled don't look good. My local white, male labour MP Matt Western shot me down when I tried to raise women's vs transgender rights with wording suspiciously similar to other MPs' emails which were posted on here at the time.
Spoil my ballot? Thanks.

I think that actually some things are so significant and difficult to reverse that focusing on those issues does make sense when choosing how to vote.
For example even Michael Heseltine said it would be preferable to vote Corbyn in if it stopped Brexit. Obvs that was before Corbyn clarified he would just push Brexit through anyway.
Disappointing about Lib Dems but confirms what I thought.
And W.E.P. is a bit of a joke despite Sandi Toksvig seeming to start to change her mind.
And thanks for the tip on how to spoil the ballot and to put a reason.
At college we had R.O.N. as a vote which was Re Open Nominarions. I quite like the idea of telling politicos repeatedly that they must try harder to be voted in.

Conservatives:
Christine Burns:
'During her time as a city IT consultant and a Tory activist, she chose not reveal her trans history to colleagues.[6] In 1995, Burns came out to local Tory leadership[7] in order to campaign more openly.[8] The British tabloids, however, chose to ignore her as she was "too ordinary".[9] Remembering this era, she jokes about her changing perception of herself as a trans activist: "I realised something had changed in 1997, when I realised it was more embarrassing to admit to being a conservative than to being a trans woman."

Yes the Lianne Wood idiocy, but they also have Helen Mary Jones.

SirVixofVixHall · 15/01/2019 19:31

Aarggh, why is it so difficult to find a party that supports women and their rights properly, when we are over half of the electorate ?

ImPreCis · 15/01/2019 20:14

I think this may be scrutiny of local candidates. If we can determine how our local candidates feel about this, and vote accordingly then we may end up with a majority of GC MPs. Of course if you live in a constituency like mine then it doesn’t really matter because it has never returned an MP other than a Tory, with, I believe, a majority that has never been out of the top 10 of safest seats.

Cwenthryth · 15/01/2019 20:44

I’m in a Labour/Tory swing seat, currently Labour but it flips back and forth, so I do feel a responsibility in choosing who to vote for!

I’m a natural lefty, I’ve voted variously for Labour/LibDem/Greens in different elections/constituencies throughout my life, I’ve always thought I could never, would never vote Tory.

However.

Lib Dems & Greens are currently out for me anyway because of gender self ID, and would be a wasted vote where I am (I’ve previously vote swapped Labour for Lib Dem).
Labour is out because of gender self ID and the general Corbyn shitshow.

I genuinely would consider holding my nose and voting Tory on this single issue, which is bonkers. It’s either that or spoiling my vote with a gender critical slogan - which I definitely would do if it wasn’t for being in a swing seat and therefore feeling I had the potential to actually influence things.

I’d hope that losing a GE would mean Corbyn out on his ear so the Labour Party can sort themselves out.

ImPreCis · 15/01/2019 21:24

On issues of conscience such as this, MPs are traditionally given a free vote, they are not whipped.
Providing the political parties agree that this applies, as it did for gay marriage, abortion etc, then it is important for us to vote for the most GC candidates we can find. This means that there will not be a particular party to vote for, but that we may have to vote for candidates that would not normally be under consideration for us as individuals, inour particular constituency, although I personally draw a line at UKIP!

gcscience · 16/01/2019 01:41

If nobody's mentioned it we need an actual women's party.

gcscience · 16/01/2019 01:42

JSmitty you forgot the women's equality party!

DayAfterTomorrow · 16/01/2019 06:39

I can't even vote Tory because my MP has a terrible track record when it comes to women's issues and I got a distinctly pro-TR response when I wrote to him earlier this year.

ISaySteadyOn · 16/01/2019 06:54

It's all very frustrating. I live in an extremely woke Labour safe seat so, tbh, I don't see any point in meeting with my MP plus I am terrible at getting points across in person. I'm with nauticant and Call MeSirShotsFired. Any party that stands up and says 'Women have the right to set boundaries' would get my vote.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 16/01/2019 08:05

Re spoiling ballots - can we all agree on a slogan/something to use?

I've never even considered spoiling a ballot. It makes me feel really uncomfortable. Dirty, actually, it makes me feel dirty.

To help that, I'd like to draw penises on the paper or write "womens' rights are human rights" "139 women know why we need women's only spaces, and none of you feckers are standing up for them" "Transwomen are not female"

I'm so angry about this. Actual rage.

OrchidInTheSun · 16/01/2019 08:09

My MP is anti self iD. Unfortunately, he's a massive tool

nauticant · 16/01/2019 08:12

We could revive #No2SelfID. It's not ideal but it's short and is clearly related to a particular issue.

duriandurian · 16/01/2019 09:05

Like the idea of a slogan. #no2selfID is v goof but wondered if #Woman=AdultHumanFemale is doable? Or just too long. I am finding I now use female instead of woman in conversations so as to avoid all doubt.

OP posts:
R0wantrees · 16/01/2019 09:21

I think it needs to refocus and MPs need to be challenged as to whether they are giving away women's rights and support the damaging of safeguarding etc.

Its a mistake to centre Transgender self-id when starting conversations.

R0wantrees · 16/01/2019 12:23

The petition has reached 10 000 and so 'Government will respond'

Those who may be seeking to form any future Government should also be aware of this.

Gentlygently · 16/01/2019 12:40

I just don't know! I have an anti-Brexit, anti Self ID MP (aren't I lucky!). But they are Labour and I just feel that Labour are an utter disaster on both Brexit and Self-ID, which are my only criteria to vote on. I live in a Lib Dem/Lab Swing seat and on Self ID the Lib Dems may be even worse!

SirVixofVixHall · 16/01/2019 15:20

I have a Conservative MP at the moment. I will have to check who his closest rival was last time.
Anyway, I am another who will vote with this issue at the forefront of my mind. That definitely rules out Labour.

SirVixofVixHall · 16/01/2019 15:27

Have checked and he won by a very small margin, his closest rival, the Labour candidate, was really rude to me on self id, and unsurprisingly had no intelligent arguments, just a bullish TWAW stance, seemingly based on lumping it in with gay rights 🙄. She didn’t seem to grasp (or care) about the bullying and gaslighting of lesbians. Would definitely vote for him over her if they both stand again.

jamrollyolly · 16/01/2019 18:49

Hello, I'm a lurker who hit peak trans a couple of months ago. I am rather in awe of the wisdom, compassion and humour I've read in these pages!

I love the idea of approaching my local candidates to pressure them and find out their position on GC issues, either by letter or in person.

Are there a set of bills ( apart from the GRA) that I should ask about opinions or voting history on? I feel that there may be many other women ( and sensible men) who could use a cheat- sheet on this issue.

Is there such a document already, that I could use and say, how about here? Or post with a letter, what is your opinion on...?

Thanks.

R0wantrees · 16/01/2019 18:56

jamrollyolly welcome!

There were some useful threads on FWR chat during the GRA consultation where women described effective meetings with their MPs so within the last 6 months.

They should be easily found using advanced search although there seem to be some glitches.

What some women have found is that MPs are really poorly briefed and so often starting with very simple questions gets better results.
