Hasn't long started: guess we'll have to wait and see how it comes out...

Aspie what are you talking about? We should all be aspiring to perform femininity until well until decomposition.

NewYearsNiamh · 11/01/2019 13:19

*until well into

Waspnest · 11/01/2019 19:42

Well even DH said this is the BBC, it isn't going to be a transwoman wot dunnit is it?

I can remember an episode of Lewis a few years ago and shock horror the murderer was a transwoman and even more shock horror, she was played by a female actress (Rachael Stirling as I recall). I can't imagine that happening now.

Skyzalimit · 11/01/2019 20:07

Sour grapes.

Nobody's claiming it's a brave new version of Shakesperean genius.

Frankly the denigration of popular culture on this thread sounds a bit classist.

LangCleg · 11/01/2019 20:28

You seemed to be giving it a pretty good go!

AspieAndProud · 11/01/2019 20:33

If it was Shakespeare it would be full of murderers and cross-dressers.

littlbrowndog · 11/01/2019 20:38

Naw it was crap lost it’s way a long time ago,

AspieAndProud · 11/01/2019 20:50

I usually watch it but it clashed with Manhunt. The problem with Silent Witness is it wants to be an issue-based mystery series and that’s difficult to pull off. You don’t need to peice together the clues; you can guess who did it based on the politics of the writers.

That’s different from older shows like Cracker where they could do a story about racism or Hillsborough but still have a black guy or a Scouser as the villain.

Ereshkigal · 12/01/2019 09:59

If you remember the "Mermaids Singing" by Val McDermid (on TV as part of Wire in the Blood) the killer (of young men) was actually an MTF trans person.

GladAllOver · 12/01/2019 13:39

I can't stand that screeching intro music. It sounds like someone being murdered before the programme starts.

AspieAndProud · 12/01/2019 14:14

In retrospect, Mermaids Singing is a hilarious title. I wonder if McDermid would get away with that today?

Theswaggyotter · 12/01/2019 15:07

Do you know I about to post exactly that as by coincidence I’ve just finished reading that book. I didn’t know what it was about before reading it. There was a bit where comment was made that all the lesbians were celebrating that finally it was someone else being murdered (as it was thought at that time that gay men were being targeted)

I was astonished when I noticed the title included Mermaids. It was published in 1995 and I wonder if this was have been published at all now. As others have said the murderer was a transwoman (autogynephile) who was killing (straight) men who rejected her sexually (because she wasn’t a woman)

ChesterGreySideboard · 12/01/2019 15:25

I too have recently finished the same book, and now very addicted to Val McDermid.

At the time of reading I did wonder if it would be the same now.

Ereshkigal · 12/01/2019 15:35

Haha I was going to make that comment but thought it was a bit much Grin

Ereshkigal · 12/01/2019 15:37

I think it's on YouTube. It's a good piece of crime drama, but very grim!

Theswaggyotter · 12/01/2019 16:05

Yes I was surprised how dark it was but brilliantly written and I’ve downloaded the next one in the series to read next

AspieAndProud · 12/01/2019 16:14

I’ve seen McDermid on a few panel shows. She has a very dry sense of humour.

ChesterGreySideboard · 12/01/2019 16:23

She is great friends with Susan Calman, which I find interesting as you wouldn't put them together until you realise that VM has such a dry sense of humour.
I started reading her because I loved her so much every time she is on radio 4. I asked on here and was recommended The Mermaids Singing. I've just started on the 5th in the series.
