That's disappointing from Robert, because it looks like he did something wrong when, in fact, he did the very opposite.

brizzledrizzle · 26/12/2018 18:49

I wonder if he and RW between them might talk to David Mitchell.

What has David Mitchell done? (hopefully nothing awful because I've just paid for his book)

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 26/12/2018 19:12

Can’t blame him really- he was probably getting sick of all the notifications from the bunfights in his mentions as well.

Doesn’t mean he’s changed his mind or regrets “coming out”.

WSPU · 26/12/2018 19:17

He must have known what would happen. Why has he backed down?

ScipioAfricanus · 26/12/2018 19:21

It’s not as if the TRAs are a forgiving bunch - they have already tearfully burned all their Peep Show DVDs.

Macareaux · 26/12/2018 20:02

I have to say I'm disappointed. Surely he had taken the worst of the flack already? He did say he was going to discuss it with Mermaids. I wonder if that had anything to do with it?

WSPU · 26/12/2018 20:08

God, if he has backed down, he was never very comitted in the first place.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 26/12/2018 20:09

It's not surprising.

ToeToToe · 26/12/2018 20:26

It's interesting, I don't understand why he deleted the tweet days later - he's already had the flack. It's not like the TRAs are going to forget it, is it? I seriously doubt he has changed his opinion.

They still call JKR a terf - for her "fat-fingered" like, they're not forgiving Martina N or Alison Moyet. Notably, Alison tweeted in support of Martina - so the TRAs harassing people until they delete their tweets isn't actually changing any opinions. It's just bullying.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 26/12/2018 20:28

It's out now, deleting it is not going to wipe people's minds.

NoseringGirl · 26/12/2018 21:06

I wonder if something came up in the conversation he was going to have with Mermaids to get him to delete the tweet?
Agree it's an odd thing to do at this point.

HomeStar · 26/12/2018 21:20

I wonder if Webb spoke directly to Susie Green.

Apropos of nothing, being at the receiving end of sociopath charm when it's dialled up full blast can be quite an intensely disconcerting experience, especially when you aren't expecting it and haven't clocked the person as a sociopath.

But that was a random digression, sorry, this thread is about Robert Webb's now-deleted tweet. I hope he hasn't been discouraged from ever tweeting about this again. And he was right the first time: Mermaids sucks.

Voice0fReason · 26/12/2018 22:04

I loved Robert's book and it's good to know he's on side.

stillathing · 26/12/2018 22:44

You have to wonder what gets said to famous people who then back down. Because I do not know of a single person IRL whose thinking has travelled in that direction. And most gender critical people I've spoken to, like me, have travelled all the way from believing TWAW, just be nice, these people are feminist allies breaking stereotypes etc.

Bittermints · 26/12/2018 22:45

As far as I know, David Mitchell has managed to stay out of this so far. I was just musing that if his long-term co-star and his brother-in-law have both said gender critical things publicly perhaps he might join them.

brizzledrizzle · 26/12/2018 22:52

Ah, I see. Thanks.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 26/12/2018 22:53

What a shame he felt the need to delete.

CarolinePooter · 27/12/2018 13:11

Actually, before he decided to delete it, he had got the message out to thousands of his followers. I consider that was an effective move, and don't doubt that many have now been peak transed.

FoldyRoll · 27/12/2018 14:03

Perhaps, Caroline. Perhaps not. In chats amongst my lefty, open minded friends who all raised their kids GNC, they're disappointed in Webb being as "twatty as Glinner" Angry

CarolinePooter · 27/12/2018 16:21

I know, Foldy. My adult daughter is a liberal leftie as you describe, and I have offended her with my dreadful opinions! I myself was a liberal leftie, and my children have been brought up to be anti- ANY type of prejudice. I honestly think it is so ingrained in them that their worst nightmare is to be thought intolerant.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 27/12/2018 17:09

I think many people don't want to be seen as intolerant to men's opinions. Lots of people find it easy to be dismissive of women's.

CarolinePooter · 27/12/2018 17:24

Amen to that!

Terfing · 27/12/2018 23:21

I believe that David Mitchell's wife is gender critical? Can't remember her name though?

RedToothBrush · 27/12/2018 23:29

Victoria Coren Mitchell.

If she's not gender critical I'd be amazed. She doesn’t trust bank cards.

Datun · 28/12/2018 01:28

The sexist claptrap that mermaids use as training, appears slightly less extreme than it was a few years ago. The same training that pencils, I believe it was, put on here, from a few years ago was unbelievably blatant about gender stereotypes.

Mermaids training is now under wide public scrutiny. They have had to move some goalposts, and redefine points after being found out, to try make themselves look less zealot like.

So that, at least, is a good thing. They are being forced to account for their nonsense. And in doing so, are having to dilute it.

Robert Webb is only half way up the hill. He sees it. It's only a question of time before he tweets again.
