This is all so unpleasant isn't it? I really count my blessings that I don't have a child going through this because... what the hell do you do? I would absolutely tow the 'gender is a construct' line but what if my child was threatening suicide? The cosy blanket of support that Mermaids seems to provide of 'talking', 'supporting', 'exploring' the options would totally feel like a lifeline if you were wavering in your resolve to not just affirm.
I don't for one minute paint Mermaids as 'individuals' as being hormone or surgery happy but where do you go when you have followed that path so singlemindedly with your own child. There's no backtracking with it. I totally believe that Mermaids started out with good intentions but where else could it go other than to suggest that following the pharmaceutical and/or surgical route would 'solve' the problem. I don't want to pile on to parents of children going through this but I feel it totally necessary to flag up that Mermaids is providing dangerous advice, painting a far too rosy picture of what life-long medication and surgery can achieve. Look at Alex Bertie and Jammydodger and Jake ft Magic on You Tube. All have gone through radical surgery and the dysphoria is still there. It's heartbreaking to watch. The realisation that when the beard comes, it's not enough, when the breasts get removed, it's not enough, when the bottom surgery is done, it still might not be enough. And all the risks to health along the way. And all the mental health issues might still be there too or only temporarily alleviated.
I wonder why SG's daughter doesn't contribute to the debate more? I watched the documentary of her trying to become Miss England in 2012. So much of it was about this idealised pageant-queen version of femininity. You would think she would be a poster girl for Mermaids as her experience is cited so often. Reading the articles that surrounded her publicity campaign in 2012 she talked about being transgender as a 'birth defect'. Such harsh language that I think would not be allowed now.
It's good that this is getting talked about.
