That's not the response we've come to expect from Mermaids is it? Why the kid gloves - because Webb's a man or are they worried about some of the recent publicity? If Webb does talk to them, I hope he does it in public.

Doobigetta · 22/12/2018 18:47

I knew Robert Webb was one of us. Thank you, Robert, if you’re reading.

Also, love this from Glinner

that's for people with dysphoria, not for little kids who don't want to play with Barbies/Action men. You are two blokes who agree with this crap because it allows you to shit on women while looking progressive. Everyone sees you.

FlowersXmas SmileWine for you, Glinner. Happy Christmas!

PronounIsWitch · 22/12/2018 18:50

Re JK I suspect it is a contract thing. It won’t be about jeopardising books sales but about not doing anything to diminish the brand re the Warner films. She may we’ll have been warned that getting involved publically here could potentially do enough damage so that she could be sued for breach of contract.

Mariotta · 22/12/2018 18:50

Someone on Twitter should send Webb the Mermaids training transcripts.

HomeStar · 22/12/2018 18:51

Did you notice the exchange between him and Jon Dryden Taylor, who was a writer on his show? Friendly mutual acknowledgement that they are "on opposite sides." But Robert Webb wants them to have a conversation about it. The other guy simply refused to discuss it.

I guess those tactics are successful in making it more difficult and isolating for people to speak up, but once a critical mass is reached, all the #nodebate stuff is going to seriously bite the TRAs on the ass.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 22/12/2018 18:52

#nodebate stuff is going to seriously bite the TRAs on the ass

It already is

AnyFucker · 22/12/2018 18:53

👍

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 22/12/2018 18:57

It’s striking how different in tone this mermaids response is isn’t it?

I wonder if they’ve learnt from mckinnon’s self inflicted mishaps and have decided to take a tone that won’t alienate large parts of the population.

Telling mermaids to “shove it up their arses” surely qualifies as literal violence? Will Robert Webb be receiving a visit from the local police force? He would if they were consistent about who to go after

ProfessoressWoland · 22/12/2018 19:07

Really glad another has spoken out. Thank you Robert.

Interesting how he didn't name Glinner and later on when someone mentioned him, said "I didn't mention him".

Fucks sake.

Graham is still the original hero.

Absolutely Glinner is a hero, but he is not a cult leader, which I think/hope is the point Robert was making?

BreakWindandFire · 22/12/2018 19:12

Absolutely Glinner is a hero, but he is not a cult leader, which I think/hope is the point Robert was making?

I think that's what he was saying as well. Some bloke was asking how he could be swayed by Graham and he responded with 'I didn't mention him - and you can't even spell his name right!'

ProfessionalBarren · 22/12/2018 19:17

I also don’t think Robert was dismissing Graham. I think he was just trying to say that this was his own thinking and not led by Graham. Made me smile when he pointed out the poster had spelt Glinner’s name wrong.

ProfessionalBarren · 22/12/2018 19:18

Cross post! Got distracted by crap Christmas films Blush

Macareaux · 22/12/2018 19:32

Webb's been onside for ages. He tweeted in support of LilyMaynard some while back.
But good to see him on the subject again. Also mentioning his wife.

And I noticed that Gia was tweeting supportively again too. Maybe a critical mass is finally building.

My overall hero though is Janice Turner.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 22/12/2018 19:37

Oh gawd, didn’t see this thread before I posted. Come on Baddiel - you're the next!

TheCbeebiesYellowBlobs · 22/12/2018 20:13

Brilliant news, just saw it on Twitter and came here to see if there was a thread. Love Robert Webb. And Oliver burkeman who has been doing sterling work for ages.

I don't get the part about Linehan being misspelt though?

WombOfOnesOwn · 22/12/2018 20:27

I'm picturing Susie Green and Cheater McKinnon standing together.

Susie's getting a kid ready to be sterilized, and McKinnon is holding up unearned medals proudly and insulting famous lesbians in sports history.

Suddenly, Susie Green thinks about it and says: "Are ... Are we the baddies?"

ChattyLion · 22/12/2018 20:39

Mermaids tweeting celebs to ‘come in and talk to us in private’ in a friendly way is really the only response they could give to such high profile people. They won’t be telling any celebrities to fuck off..

I’d have more respect for Mermaids if they tried to rebut the specifics of what the Times article has said about them.

teawamutu · 22/12/2018 21:45

It is also a tried and tested technique for dealing with any complaining customer - take it to private conversation or DM and take it out of the public view.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/12/2018 21:48

I would think he will be a bit irritated by the suggestion that he doesn't really know what Mermaids are all about and is relying on a single newspaper article.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 22/12/2018 22:10

I could cry big, fangirl sobs of relief. Thank you Mr Webb! Thank you!

teawamutu · 22/12/2018 22:40

I've just seen a comment along the lines of 'for every transphobe there are 99 allies'. Um. One of the sides in this debate is really misreading the silent majority...

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/12/2018 22:47

He's pissed off now...

Another voice.....
CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 22/12/2018 22:59

He's not only 'got it's he's been smacked across the face with the arrogance of it all.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 22/12/2018 23:03

Fair play to Webb- he’s been “out” for ages, but I’m glad he’s actively speaking out about it.

I wonder if JKR will speak out once the final Fantastic Beasts film is out- I certainly hope she does sooner rather than later.

HandsOffMyRights · 22/12/2018 23:16

Re JK - guessing it would also be awkward to say the least with Ezra Miller....
