Relax, it's not a trans thread.

It's about the horrific murder of Natalie Connolly.

twitter.com/ThatMidwife/status/1075808892477693952?s=19

Who's writing to the Attorney General?

OP posts:
BoreOfWhabylon · 22/12/2018 01:41

Bowl I guess it's not impossible that it was sustained in a fall. Just far more likely, especially in someone who had been savagely beaten, that it wasn't due to a fall.

The extent of the bruising, as described in the judge's comments, also sounded horrific.

And hadn't she been texting an ex? He deliberately beat her and sexually assaulted her in a rage imo. This was not consensual "rough sex".

Kimlek · 22/12/2018 03:48

Abhorrent. Have sent email to both addresses provided and signed the petition. Albeit, I’ve no idea if those change.org petitions have any clout. I’ll also write to my MP although not too sure what he will do.

Snowglobes · 22/12/2018 03:53

Why is this in ‘feminist chat’ please? I realise the OP has placed it here but it’s a human rights issue not purely feminist. Could it be moved? AIBU would get mire traffic and hopefully justice for Natalie.

BlancheM · 22/12/2018 07:46

You could be on to something snow but then again, the thread about this on aibu has some posters arguing that the charge was correct, being drunk was the cause of death and that she was 'into' the violence which was inflicted on her. Angry

MrsSpenserGregson · 22/12/2018 07:49

Thank you @arranbubonicplague I've written to the AG.

FFS Sad Angry

Snowglobes · 22/12/2018 08:10

*@blancheM*unbelievable how anyone could think she was to blame. Her injuries sound horrific.

TooTrueToBeGood · 22/12/2018 09:02

unbelievable how anyone could think she was to blame.

Because she's just a woman and he's got money. The judge even made note of him being a successful businessman as supposed evidence of his good character. Fucking sickening.

AngryAttackKittens · 22/12/2018 09:15

Why would any woman consent to that, or seek it out? The fact that the perpetrator's claims weren't immediately brushed off as absurd demonstrates the extent to which porn culture has successfully increased the amount of free floating misogyny in every culture impacted by it.

Yodabrussel · 22/12/2018 09:42

Emailed the AG. Reading the judge's sentencing notes made me feel sick and this case is yet another example of society's utter disregard for women. RIP Natalie.

OnAScaleOf1to10ItsA7 · 22/12/2018 09:48

The AG office posted on twitter yesterday that they were reviewing the sentence!

feministfairy · 22/12/2018 09:53

Hmmm. I will wait to see what happens. Given the outrageousness of the judge's comments and beliefs enshrined in his comments, there's going to have to be a real turn around before!

arranbubonicplague · 22/12/2018 09:59

The AG office posted on twitter yesterday that they were reviewing the sentence

What they tweeted:

We can confirm that we have received a request from a member of the public under the #ULS scheme relating to John Broadhurst. Only one request is required for us to consider a sentence.

twitter.com/attorneygeneral/status/1075712415780659200

Woman's Place UK, FilIA etc. are asking for more letters to convey the level of public anger/distress at the sentence. Several people have queried the address: an alternate address is

[email protected]

BrienneofTERF · 22/12/2018 10:05

Here is the link from the AG twitter account saying they will review the case. They say they only need one letter to review a case (reading between the lines they are asking us not to overwhelm them with more letters) but I fear they try to whitewash over this once we’ve all calmed down.

Horrifying beyond measure.

Does this mean that if a man has any form of ‘evidence’ that you have, at some point in the past, consented to ‘rough sex’, he can go ahead and torture you to death at any point in the future because ‘that’s how she liked it’??????

Fuckyousanta · 22/12/2018 10:18

Why was nothing much made of the fact he was clearly up at 6am and didn’t call an ambulance until 9am.

Is the judge saying she didn’t die from the vaginal bleed, she died from alcohol/drug levels? There’s a part where he says her vagina would have bled more if she hadn’t died.

No way did she blow her eye socket walking into a door. Can not believe he was believed on this point.

He decided it was too extreme to hit her with a belt so went for the boot instead. But then decided the trigger bottle wasn’t too extreme?! Come on now, my three year old lies better than that

Will email later

SockEatingMonster · 22/12/2018 10:19

Also, funny how women are so prone to falling down the stairs and sustaining serious facial injuries.

Chardeemacdennis1 · 22/12/2018 10:28

In a news article Natalie's sister said that Natalie told her he was into rough sex.

The man said it was Natalie that was into rough sex and it was accepted without question. I don't understand why.

I also can't see what the reasonable explanation for pouring bleech in her face was.

He also admits that she was talking nonsense and practically unconscious when she requested he use the carpet cleaner. I'm confused as to why that's not rape with an object. No woman would request that in her right mind. No man would do it unless he was sadistic and abusive.

All the evidence points to a deliberate act of violence against Natalie. He gave inconsistent and unbelievable excuses and the judge just accepted it as true.

I’ve emailed. Thank you for this thread.

Charley50 · 22/12/2018 13:02

I'm glad so many people have written to the AG about this, but a shame the AG didn't have the humility to say on their Twitter feed that they've received hundreds (maybe thousands) of emails about it. Instead they just mention that it only takes one to review a case. (Sorry if this doesn't make much sense).

arranbubonicplague · 22/12/2018 15:53

Just seen a claim that has shocked me if it's verified:

R0wantrees · 22/12/2018 16:07

Just listening to Woman's Hour Radio 4 discussing how the 'nagging and shagging' defence was abolished in 2009 and that this is a new version eg 'she wanted this violence' .

Not sure who the legal commentator is but worth listening to.

She is highlighting that Natalie Connolly not only has lost her life but also her reputation by this defence.

R0wantrees · 22/12/2018 16:10

I'd like to reframe the comment above to say that Natalie Connolly had her life and reputation taken from her.

Pulltheotheroneitsgotbellson · 22/12/2018 16:10

Again we must look at the root cause - the justice system is not fit for purpose for crimes against women and children.
