It reminds me a bit of my Uni days when we realised our 20-something friend who owned her own property didn't know how to turn the mains water off and hadn't known how to do so in any of our various house shares. When I asked her what she would have done if there were a leak she said "call the police". Oh how we laughed as she realised how silly that sounded.

And fast forward to 2018...

VickyEadie · 09/12/2018 12:55

I've read and re-read Glinner's comments about Harrop. I cannot see the remotest indication that he had any intention of 'contacting' Harrop, much less any sort of 'threat'.

Glinner made a fair comment about Harrop's views. That's what anyone's entitled to do, isn't it? Which 'law' might the police who visited Glinner feel might be invoked here?

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 09/12/2018 12:56

Since the police seem to have so much free time on their hands...

Could they please read the electricity / gas meters for me? They are high up on the wall and I need a ladder.

WomanAndProud · 09/12/2018 12:56

Notbad I totally agree. Every time someone makes a misogynistic remark we should be reporting it as threatening, hate speech etc. Every time we feel "literal violence" from something said online. The only reason these people get away with it is because they're the only ones doing it. If everybody did it - and I'd add in every racist, homophobic and xenophobic comment too, because there are a tonne of them - the police would be forced to stop even considering the feelz of one group.

I actually don't want to waste police time, or suggest it, yet I'm not sure how to force the police to respond to complaints like the Dr's by dismissing them until an ACTUAL crime has occurred.

Carowiththegoodhair · 09/12/2018 12:58

I just want to attach a message from a neighbour and friend who was concerned, written on 11th Oct. Maybe I ought to tell Dr Harrumph he smells of elderberries?

Dropping in a barnstorming analysis of Ontological Totalitarianism by Numbers broken down into 30 bullet points by @LadyPrincesexual that @glinner might find relevant to his situation.

21. People refusing to validate your identity may be painful.
22. Something being painful is not conceptually identical to it being a moral harm, structural violence, or an act of oppression.
23. Not getting our needs met is sometimes painful.
24. Sometimes our needs don’t get met because other people also have needs, beliefs, and interests.
25. Thinking you must always have you needs met and refusing to understand why other people may not meet your needs, is narcissistic entitlement.

As ever, I recommend the whole piece.

Let them tilt at windmills.

Meanwhile we'll carry on just being women.

Notevenmyrealname · 09/12/2018 13:01

We’ve had people selling drugs out of car windows outside our house. We live on a cul-de-sac in a leafy suburb and a police liaison officer came round after about three weeks of us contacting them and told us to just keep logging visits and number plates that we noticed but there wasn’t a lot they could do unless they actually saw it themselves and they don’t have enough resources to send anyone round to patrol the area. We have children as do plenty of others on the road and there are elderly people living alone. Maybe I should try politely criticising the actions of the drug dealers on social media and the police will be round a bit quicker next time to speak to us.

Yes, NotEvenMyRealName suggest they are doing it to fund sex reassignment surgery.

Waterparc · 09/12/2018 13:12

.....his eyebrows......I’m glad he seems to have given up being a real doctor as I wouldn’t want to treat me

Ereshkigal · 09/12/2018 13:12

I'm guessing, at a stretch, malicious communications.

TwistedStitch · 09/12/2018 13:13

They do this because then it becomes part of their narrative. It becomes 'GL was even visited by the police because of his awful harrassment', 'I had to call the police about GL because I was so alarmed,' 'The police even had to visit GL and give him a warning about his awful hate speech'.

It becomes then that nobody cares about the actual facts and details, just the mud sticking. It's a tactic.

Waterparc · 09/12/2018 13:13

Thanks for this:
“21. People refusing to validate your identity may be painful.
22. Something being painful is not conceptually identical to it being a moral harm, structural violence, or an act of oppression.”

SunsetBeetch · 09/12/2018 13:17

Yes my thoughts went to you and the lack of police help, Caro . It makes me furious, tbh.

UpstartCrow · 09/12/2018 13:18

When women call the police for violent crimes we are evil carceral feminists.
I won't hold my breath waiting for pseudo left wing misogynists to call out Harrop for his carceral actions.

AspieAndProud · 09/12/2018 13:22

The police are working properly.

Has anyone tried switching them off and back on again?

deepwatersolo · 09/12/2018 13:47

I still don‘t understand this. Surely, Harrop cried wolf, ok. But surely, the modus operandi of the police will be to ask for the incriminating twitter thread, which Harrop can easily provide. And after reading this, the police still felt the need to drive over to Graham and interview him?!?!?! I am at a loss.

Glinner · 09/12/2018 13:49

I think Norfolk police passed on my details to Yorkshire police the last time. Luckily I have experience on how to deal with this sort of thing now. They wanted to be able to say something like "I am happy to announce that a fifty year old comedy writer has been told by police etc etc etc" so I just refused to accept any restrictions to my behaviour.

Thanks for all the support, as always. :)

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 09/12/2018 13:52

Good for you, Glinner. I am glad to see you here but am sorry to hear of the latest nonsense.

Ereshkigal · 09/12/2018 13:52

Has anyone tried switching them off and back on again?

Datun · 09/12/2018 13:56

That's good to know, Graham. Good advice for anyone else.

As a result, this entire issue is backfiring on Harrop. Making him look like an absolute idiot, and either in cahoots with dodgy police, or manipulating them like fools.

Neurotrash · 09/12/2018 14:01

Has anyone tried switching them off and back on again?GrinGrin

Glad you're on top of this Glinner. What a fucking waste of time. Please use Aspies joke in something some time ;)

Carowiththegoodhair · 09/12/2018 14:07

I’ve been told that for hatsssmebt to occur, someone actually has to contact you. Which is not the principle applied in DPP vs Kellett. In fact this a good case for people to be aware of if employers are contacted by activists. It does constitute harassment.

choptheknot.wordpress.com/2012/02/09/kellett-v-dpp-2001-ewhc-admin-107/

Mentioning someone’s media appearance on Twitter does not constitute harassment.

donquixotedelamancha · 09/12/2018 14:25

Given you can’t even get the police out for a burglary, how is this happening?

This. How many officer's time has been wasted? Taking a statement; the paperwork to pass it between forces; then coming out and speaking to you. How the hell did this pass through so many hands without someone deciding it wasn't worth the time?
