I am a right winger - convince me to become a feminist

RadicalConservative · 01/12/2018 20:27

As per subject, I vote Conservative, why? Because I believe in personal responsibility, I also believe that if you cannot afford something you should tighten your belt and save up instead of relying on credit which is ridiculously expensive i.e fiscal responsibility. I also believe in an individuals dignity and right to live whether that be a older person with a debilitating illness or a foetus in the womb. I lurk on FWR for a number of reasons and I would like to know and understand "feminist" issues however I find I am often dismayed at some of the "tribalism" and "hive mind" mentality on these threads. However if you can, please do try to educate me as to why women like myself should in your view be feminists, as it would seem that right wingers such as myself are only useful when we happen to agree on specific issues - see this tweet for an example: twitter.com/NadineDorries/status/1068477170526445568

OP posts:
Racecardriver · 01/12/2018 22:23

I’m sorry but I really don’t get why you vote conservative, they don’t espouse the majority of the views you hold.

ABitCrapper · 01/12/2018 22:24

So how do people like to pair their socks? I'm a baller but DH says it's so wrong, he folds! Shock

recently · 01/12/2018 22:27

Not all feminists agree on everything.
Not all Conservatives agree on everything.
Not all Christians agree on everything.

Hope that helps.

LangCleg · 01/12/2018 22:29

Kleenex.
Weetabix.

Is there anything further I should add?

IstanbulConstan · 01/12/2018 22:29

Do you find the elastic at the ankle loosening over time from storing socks that way?

ABitCrapper · 01/12/2018 22:31

Not noticeably no, but maybe I just have cankles so don't know! Grin

KataraJean · 01/12/2018 22:36

I read that bit Iaminsane - it was in the self-declared context of oppression Olympics, where the only response would be to reveal more of one’s own past, not as part of a genuine reflection on how CSA may or may not shape one’s response or feelings about feminism.

I think the whole thread was goady. It just had triggering material intertwined with the goady-ness.

littlbrowndog · 01/12/2018 22:42

Yeah katera
She was a wanka

Iaminsaneincaseyoudidntknow · 01/12/2018 22:48

Having read the responses to this thread I can understand why the OP is not a feminist, the responses are not helpful and in many instance outright vile

UpstartCrow · 01/12/2018 22:49

Do you have a problem with pornography? Yes because it disempowers women and lessens their status as human into sexual objects for the pleasure of the male species

I see this comment made frequently on the board by people who are scientifically illiterate and would like to correct it; males are not a separate species from females.

The human race is one species. We are sexually dimorphic, which means that we can tell males and females apart by observation.

LangCleg · 01/12/2018 22:56

outright vile

So?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 01/12/2018 22:57

*iaminsane

Do you know why my post was disgusting?

MrGHardy · 01/12/2018 23:03

"As per subject, I vote Conservative, why? Because I believe in personal responsibility, I also believe that if you cannot afford something you should tighten your belt and save up instead of relying on credit which is ridiculously expensive i.e fiscal responsibility."

This has nothing to do with this board per se. It might be relevant in certain situations (e.g. if one discusses inequality as to how it pertains to economic means) but really it adds nothing. Why did you mention it?

"I also believe in an individuals dignity and right to live whether that be a older person with a debilitating illness or a foetus in the womb. I lurk on FWR for a number of reasons and I would like to know and understand "feminist" issues"

Not sure again how euthanasia is a feminist issue. Regarding abortion, you said you "lurk" on the forums. You really have never come across a thread on abortion? Mmmkay. This relates to the entire thread as well - if you lurk, why do you need to be educated? I lurked for a long time, then started posting here and there, but mostly read, and understand a little more every time. Also, what exactly do you want to be educated on? Is your question more: "Give me a list of reasons to become feminists"?

"however I find I am often dismayed at some of the "tribalism" and "hive mind" mentality on these threads. However if you can, please do try to educate me as to why women like myself should in your view be feminists, as it would seem that right wingers such as myself are only useful when we happen to agree on specific issues - see this tweet for an example:"

I thought conservatives are strong and not snowflakes at all, and yet you feel scared of presenting the outlying view on a board?

So many questions around your OP, that only logical conclusion is that you're a troll. Probably not even female.

HestiaParthenos · 01/12/2018 23:03

Feminism is right. It doesn't matter whether feminists aren't "nice".

As a Harry Potter fan, I will put it into simple terms for you:

Radical feminism may at times be Severus Snape, but patriarchy is Dolores Umbridge.

Anyone who'd choose "is nice as long as I do what she wants" over "is nasty to me but protects my life, body and freedom" is just stupid.

It really isn't hard.

Besides, I was nice to the OP. She didn't even bother replying to me, at least not before being nasty to those who were less inclined to cater to her.

She's not interested in feminism, she's just trolling.

Back to the really important topics: I think folding socks is really a bit exaggerated, I just throw them in a drawer.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 01/12/2018 23:09

I fold socks...and pants

LurkingWaspi · 01/12/2018 23:09

All my socks are odd, a bit like myself.
Happiness is a matched pair of socks.

RebelWitchFace · 01/12/2018 23:11

" I'm here to learn! Teach me!
Temper tantrum!
You're all insane!
Temper tantrum!
You're even more insane!"

Flounces.

Hmm
lydiamajora · 01/12/2018 23:14

I engaged with the topic in good faith and under the assumption of good faith. However, when you go to a feminist forum and post a "change my mind" sort of challenge, and then fan the flames of the negative engagement while ignoring the constructive engagement, you kind of suggest that your goal is to stir up shit.

This topic would not have unfolded in the way it did if 1) the original poster only addressed the people who engaged constructively, and 2) if the posters who felt this was pure goady fuckery just followed the normal rule for trolls: Do Not Feed.

LangCleg · 01/12/2018 23:23

if the posters who felt this was pure goady fuckery just followed the normal rule for trolls: Do Not Feed

Yes, but it's Saturday night, some of us have been on the sloe gin, and are even less likely than usual to GAF.

(I can't possibly imagine which of us that might be.)

HestiaParthenos · 01/12/2018 23:24

I think you mean "or". I wouldn't have joined the camp that considers this thread goady fuckery if the OP had thanked any of the people who actually did the work to educate her.

In retrospect, we should all have ignored the thread. But you always know better in retrospect ...

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 01/12/2018 23:27

OP was rude from the get go

MrGHardy · 01/12/2018 23:34

"What the hell is going on? You think I am a man because I want to understand? You are truly insane"

Funnily enough, that was my first thought as well. Now reading the thread, I do not anymore, but I certainly think that as far as stereotypes go, you post like a man. And I am pretty sure if we took a random poll most people would guess that, too.

I wonder what the correlation is between this observation and you not being a feminist.

ClosdesMouches · 01/12/2018 23:35
Hmm
Datun · 01/12/2018 23:50

Why are these weirdos all the same? The process is identical. Despite most women identifying it in the opening post. They still carry on. Just to arrive at the disgusting/vile/vitriol nonsense.

lydiamajora · 01/12/2018 23:58

You're right, Hestia, it should be an "or" - the thread behaviour showed that op was, indeed, a goady fucker.
