Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I am a right winger - convince me to become a feminist

As per subject, I vote Conservative, why? Because I believe in personal responsibility, I also believe that if you cannot afford something you should tighten your belt and save up instead of relying on credit which is ridiculously expensive i.e fiscal responsibility. I also believe in an individuals dignity and right to live whether that be a older person with a debilitating illness or a foetus in the womb. I lurk on FWR for a number of reasons and I would like to know and understand "feminist" issues however I find I am often dismayed at some of the "tribalism" and "hive mind" mentality on these threads. However if you can, please do try to educate me as to why women like myself should in your view be feminists, as it would seem that right wingers such as myself are only useful when we happen to agree on specific issues - see this tweet for an example: twitter.com/NadineDorries/status/1068477170526445568

It does seem to be getting earlier and earlier aBit - I’d say 1/3 round our way have lights up.

Any fabulously OTT ones near you? There used to be someone where I lived before who put tinsel in their hedge as well as lights. Have to admire that kind of dedication...

HestiaParthenos · 01/12/2018 21:51

There's people in the neighbourhood who have a complete Father Christmas with sleigh and reindeer and all ensemble that's illuminated from the inside.

I think I will take a walk tomorrow and see whether they've put it on yet.

Justhadathought · 01/12/2018 21:52

Please calm down everyone........

We are al. women who have suffered on account of our femaleness and in uniquely female ways. This is what sisterhood, and feminism, is about.

AssassinatedBeauty · 01/12/2018 21:52

Oh dear, how predictable.

ABitCrapper · 01/12/2018 21:54

There's one house a but if a walk away that has a whole herd of those moving tube-light deer, a dome with fake snow and snowman, AND continuous music playing outside... I would hate to be their neighbour!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 01/12/2018 21:54

Who isnt calm?

Justhadathought · 01/12/2018 21:54

@Hestia and others:

FFS, please stop this inane talking about cakes, baking and other irrelevancies. it is very dismissive and passive aggressive. I'm not sure if this is your intention? this sort of 'thing' seems to happen quite a bit on here.

thenightsky · 01/12/2018 21:55

&Ever wondered why you were able to vote at all, let alone conservative*

Oh yes, this.

LurkingWaspi · 01/12/2018 21:55

I've always had a soft spot for Liberation Theology myself Justathought.

HestiaParthenos · 01/12/2018 21:55

I am calm. I am just wondering why the thread starter is still here. She should be reading Andrea Dworkin by now.

After all, Andrea Dworkin is a very well-known feminist, whose feminist-ness isn't at all in question, and who could explain very well to a right-winger how feminism might benefit her more than supporting right-wing males.

The topic is settled, really.

Anyone has baked Christmas cookies yet? I think I will get some new cookie cutters in snowflake form, those are just adorable.

HestiaParthenos · 01/12/2018 21:57

It feels dismissive? Well, good.

I told the OP where she could start informing herself about feminism. That's all the help she needs.

If she were in my office, I'd dismiss her now, that is, tell her she can leave. (That's what dismissive means, doesn't it? Sorry, not a native speaker)

ABitCrapper · 01/12/2018 21:58

just I was merely continuing a more satisfying and productive conversation than the one with the Op - who clearly had an agenda and a determination to get there.
Hope you're having a nice evening? I will be staying up with my croup plagued toddler with the window open at various intervals...

Justhadathought · 01/12/2018 21:59

@Lurkingwaspi:

Yes. There is a lot to be said for Christian mysticism and Liberation Theology.

HestiaParthenos · 01/12/2018 22:00

Ever wondered why you were able to vote at all, let alone conservative

I personally always thought women who aren't feminists don't vote anyway.

I mean, if you don't want the right to vote as a woman, it is not like you have to.

(There's countries that force people to vote, I think, but that's not very democratic. I think women who think they should be ruled by men should get to opt out of voting. Men who don't like democracy, likewise, should get to opt out of using so distasteful democratic rights as voting.)

ABitCrapper · 01/12/2018 22:00

Ooh yes I really fancy some snowflake cutters! Ds loves making biscuits for the dds to decorate, and they would all love snowflakes!

Bowlofbabelfish · 01/12/2018 22:05

Ah gosh, croup is awful aBit - hope they improve soon.

What’s liberation theology? Sorry I’m fairly clueless about such things... I shall google.

You should get a snowflake cutter that isn't too fragile, I heard they have the problem that parts of the snowflake break off, that's probably even more of an issue with young children.

SignMeUp · 01/12/2018 22:10

To really answer your question, I'd like to know your age, sex, race, sexual orientation, marital/parental and economic status. And how extreme your Christianity is.

This article in the NYT might be enlightening (US politics)www.nytimes.com/2018/10/12/sunday-review/conservative-women-trump-kavanaugh.html

ABitCrapper · 01/12/2018 22:12

Good advice Hestia I'll check

Thanks bowl - he does get it with every cold unfortunately. my other 2 never had it once so I panicked a bit the first time!

Broken11Girl · 01/12/2018 22:15
Hmm
Justhadathought · 01/12/2018 22:18

@bowlofbabelfish

"Liberation theology is a synthesis of Christian theology and Marxist socio-economic analyses that emphasizes social concern for the poor and the political liberation for oppressed peoples."

KataraJean · 01/12/2018 22:21

I was not calm.
I am calm now.
Happy to be called insane, though educated insane may be better.
But for the good of my health, I am off to read the threads where no-one turns up to ask people to explain what they believe and starts going on about issues which I really should stay away from.

Flowers and Gin all around

ABitCrapper · 01/12/2018 22:22

Gin. Clink

Iaminsaneincaseyoudidntknow · 01/12/2018 22:22

Wow, you've really shown your true colours there @Itsallgoingtobefine2018... how do you expect anyone to discuss anything with you when you respond with such palpable contempt?

Did you not read the post where she said she is a CSA survivor or did that just pass you by?
