Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

In defence of deadnaming

For ‘deadnaming’ is just a Newspeak word designed to demonise the telling of historical truths. Not satisfied with seeking to control contemporary discussion and attitudes, now trans activists and their allies (all institutions, in essence) want to control the past itself. History. No way. The past happened, it was true, and we should not allow that to be erased and forgotten just to make some people feel better about themselves.

Yet again spiked (which I never used to read) has written a good, hardhitting, sensible article on transactivism.

LOL

You do realise, Rat and Fox (woodland theme!) that that level of absurdity is what happens when you empty the word "lesbian" of all meaning so that it can mean two ladies getting together with their "female penises"?

RatRolyPoly · 28/12/2018 19:17

Thanks Bowl, something to read at last!

I don't think we share an understanding of "tinfoil hattery" Chewy.

NonExistentFox · 28/12/2018 19:18

So a non transman? A transman is biologically female so a non transman is a biological woman? And this would make them a biological female who is straight and therefore fancies men? Or women?

I can usually keep up with this up your own fundament claptrap, but I am genuinely confused.

No, not a non transman, a non-trans man. I.e. a natal XY man, but someone got me deleted when I used the C-word-that-isn't-cunt so we have to use this pantomine to avoid offending you.

What do you mean the majority? Does it matter? Lesbians who fuck straight 'non-trans men' [AKA men] are not lesbians surely?

You'd think, but like the political lesbians they are very insistent and I can't be arsed to argue.

Datun · 28/12/2018 19:23

Rat, I'm not being funny or nuthin', but you seem to think that twitter is some rarefied and irrelevant space, disconnected to the real world and something one can safely ignore.

Which I do understand, to be honest. I was of that opinion myself before I started to take notice of it.

But often, it is a microcosm on the wider world. And also, frequently, a precursor to what happens in the wider world.

Time without number, I will read something in the newspaper, that I have already read on Twitter. Only, it was not only the week before, it was more comprehensive.

Don't dismiss it.

AngryAttackKittens · 28/12/2018 19:24

Didn't Rat say she was giving up FWR for Lent or something?

(Wrong time of year, I know, but then again we have Fox spending her Christmas giving a bunch of strangers a lecture so apparently tis the season.)

NonExistentFox · 28/12/2018 19:25

You do realise, Rat and Fox (woodland theme!) that that level of absurdity is what happens when you empty the word "lesbian" of all meaning so that it can mean two ladies getting together with their "female penises"?

I was laughing at the idea that XX women don't have anal sex with each other, actually.

Datun · 28/12/2018 19:25

No, not a non transman, a non-trans man. I.e. a natal XY man, but someone got me deleted when I used the C-word-that-isn't-cunt so we have to use this pantomine to avoid offending you.

Hahaha !!!! Just say man!!

Honest to God, the pantomime is you!

AngryAttackKittens · 28/12/2018 19:26

I wish Twitter was its own pocket universe walled off from the rest of the world, but alas, it seems that important people like politicians do pay attention to what's said there.

Datun · 28/12/2018 19:26

I was laughing at the idea that XX women don't have anal sex with each other, actually.

This might be a wild guess, but I'm assuming they meant with actual penises.

But nice sixth form, sniggering derail.

AngryAttackKittens · 28/12/2018 19:27

You're making Fox unable to just say "man", Datun, with your evilness.

RatRolyPoly · 28/12/2018 19:28

Didn't Rat say she was giving up FWR for Lent or something?

Yeah, but then I overheard Fox calling me clever and it went to my head. Don't worry, I won't make a habit of it Smile

Bowlofbabelfish · 28/12/2018 19:31

This stuff is worrying rat - it’s very basic tenets of a free society that are being chipped away at.

I dont believe making deadnaming illegal will do anything positive for the acceptance of transpeople in society - quite the opposite. It would create fear and resentment and a sense of a group of people able to hide something that everyone else can’t. I dont see that as positive at all. We need less ‘othering’ not more.

It’s also too open to abuse as the first link shows. Any chancer or scammer or criminal can use it because there’s no gatekeeping to self ID. Serious criminals could too. It’s just creating a whacking great loophole.

Keeping in mind our end goal - which for me is law and order, no impactvon civil protections, no reduction of rights for any group, acceptance of people who don’t conform to gender stereotypes, maintaining sex based based protections where these are needed and protection of the vulnerable.
Does deadnaming advance that? No. Does it have potentially serious negative effects? Yes.

So deadnaming- yes it can potentially be rude, but the consequences of making it illegal are serious and affect us all

Datun · 28/12/2018 19:32

Straight Non-Trans Men.

Honestly, I'm pissing myself. You cannot possibly think that people will understand this! But also, by your own acknowledgement, they can only ever understand it if it's actually written down! Because the hyphen is everything.

Honestly, don't you ever, even the tiniest bit, laugh at yourself?

AngryAttackKittens · 28/12/2018 19:35

Ah, but people should understand, and if they don't realize that trans people are now the standard from which the rest of us deviate then they're just bigots and it doesn't matter if they don't understand. This is definitely how you win hearts and minds and will ensure that everyone comes to agree with you eventually (or else).

Ereshkigal · 28/12/2018 19:36

Wrong time of year, I know,

To be honest she did say she "wasn't going to do FWR any more" (I paraphrase) months ago so you might be bang on.

Ereshkigal · 28/12/2018 19:37

Honestly, don't you ever, even the tiniest bit, laugh at yourself?

Lemme guess...

AngryAttackKittens · 28/12/2018 19:39

Most people laugh at themselves sometimes. Being unable to do so rarely indicates anything good, imo.

NonExistentFox · 28/12/2018 19:40

In the real world I'd say c**. On here if I say man you might think I mean TM.

This might be a wild guess, but I'm assuming they meant with actual penises.

Well the idea that sex is defined by penises is one of these things that lesbians get touchy about.

RatRolyPoly · 28/12/2018 19:41

Datun. Seriously. Anywhere else in the world Fox could just say "cis". And you think she should feel ridiculous for pandering to the linguistic demands that GC feminists have made on this site? She goes out of her way to be understood on your terms and you ridicule her?

Are you still quite sure you're still on the right side of your own ethics? Or were you always this way?

AngryAttackKittens · 28/12/2018 19:43

If she'd said "cis" at my family's Christmas dinner nobody over 25 other than me would have had any idea what she meant.

Ereshkigal · 28/12/2018 19:43

"Yes I think people should be prevented from speaking the truth. With legal sanctions if appropriate. Err, well as long as it isn't about something that I personally believe"

Be careful what you wish for.

Ereshkigal · 28/12/2018 19:46

In the real world I'd say c

You might, but hardly anyone else does.

Ereshkigal · 28/12/2018 19:47

Not even my virtue signalling pro trans American cousin uses it. Because she doesn't move in TRA circles.

Ereshkigal · 28/12/2018 19:49

cis". And you think she should feel ridiculous for pandering to the linguistic demands that GC feminists have made on this site?

Hmmm. I seem to remember someone said that that made the guidelines scrupulously fair to both sides so everyone should stop complaining?

RatRolyPoly · 28/12/2018 19:52

Ooh, was it me Eresh? Sounds like the kind of thing I'd say.

I don't mind not using cis, but I'd be pretty aggrieved if someone laughed at me for using an alternative when they were the ones who claimed offence in the first place.

I tend to use "natal" myself.
