Writing from Twitter prison!

I've received a twelve-hour ban from Twitter so I thought I'd take the chance to say hello lovely mumsnetters! Thank you for all the support and kind words and very proud to be on your side.

I'm not deleting the tweets because I stand by them and there's nothing offensive about them. See for thyself, fellow witches!

Another one grateful to you. You make the points I'd make if it wouldn't get me - literally - sacked. Which just feels mad and awful but, anyway, I'm glad you do.

SirVixofVixHall · 16/11/2018 18:52

Glinner ! We luff you ! I tell my daughters of your brilliance and we have family chats about the greatness of you generally. I follow you on twitter under my real name. I have an uncommon surname and tracking me down in real life would be relatively easy, so out of fear of male aggression I don’t tweet much on gender issues. I really don’t want someone pitching up at my door, my daughters are 11 and 13 and I have to try to keep them safe.
It does however twist me up inside that I feel like this. That I’m on the Lily Madigan bloody blocklist because I follow people like Magdalen. That although I went to a Women’s Place meeting, I was with my daughter who was terrified by the change of venue, and the police outside. I say what I think in real life, face to face, but I don’t stick my head up enough on twitter. Will contact them about your ban though.
Thank you Graham, for everything you have bravely done to support women’s rights. Bravo.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 16/11/2018 18:53

Welcome to Mumsnet, Glinner!

Do you know Ricky Gervais? He's been speaking up a bit lately.

Bowlofbabelfish · 16/11/2018 18:53

Ah hello. I’ll put the kettle on.

My cakes have the density of a neutron star so I reckon a file wouldn’t be noticed.

Thanks to you and Johnny for standing up for women’s rights.

A question if I may? I know you make Twitter froth, but how has your stance on this been received by people you know in the real world? Have you faced losing friends over it or are people understanding?

May I also express my thanks for the ‘cigarettes, alcohol and rollerblading’ episode of father ted, which never fails to make me laugh enough to remind me my pelvic floor isn’t what it was ;)

hdh747 · 16/11/2018 18:55

Hello. Thank you for brightening up my day. Today. And many days.

hackmum · 16/11/2018 18:56

Welcome, Glinner! Thanks for speaking out. I’m so grateful that you a) get it and )b are willing to kick up a fuss about it. Most people in the public eye don’t understand it or, if they do, don’t have the guts to make a stand.

FloralBunting · 16/11/2018 18:59

You know, I watched the episode of Father Ted with Richard Wilson in it the other day, getting angrier and angrier about people saying "I don't believe it!" and it occured to me that you probably feel that way in every single tweet thread now when some feckin' eejit writes 'I hear you're a transphobe now, Father!'

You're very welcome, though, sir. Although be prepared, now you have publicly posted on the radicalisation portal, you will likely be inundated with cash from the American Christian Right. It's happened to all of us in turn and it does get quite tricky hiding all the benjamins.

FermatsTheorem · 16/11/2018 19:01

PS my favourite episode is the lost in the Mekong Delta lingerie department episode.

"Another one grateful to you. You make the points I'd make if it wouldn't get me - literally - sacked. Which just feels mad and awful but, anyway, I'm glad you do."

Exactly why I keep doing it even though everyoneEVERYONE is asking/demanding that I stop.

Yes huge thanks to Jonny too. You are a 🌟.

BouncingOn · 16/11/2018 19:04

Glinner!!! That's my Friday night made.

Thank you for the support.

CrookedMe · 16/11/2018 19:04

Just want to say thanks Glinner.

I don't tweet about this issue now since my job came under threat for one (very mild) question I posed. So thanks for giving us all breathing room; it helps such a lot for their to be voices in this that are far less easily silenced than the likes of mine.

I raise a🍺 to you pal

FatherFitzgerald · 16/11/2018 19:05

You’re the reason, I think, I’m on Terfblocker Smile so thanks for that alone. And thanks to Johnny Best too. May you both never get lost in Ireland’s largest lingerie department

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 16/11/2018 19:06

Thank you so much for keeping on.

And Jonny too. I'm a lesbian, I used to volunteer for Stonewall & I'm fucking furious over what it's become.

stillathing · 16/11/2018 19:08

The IT crowd episode where they go to the theatre is one of the few times I have laughed so scarily hard that I did not have time to do breathing.

So thanks for that glinner and everything else!

ProfessionalBarren · 16/11/2018 19:08

Is it profoundly unfeminist to swoon?! But seriously, cheers to you and to JB for all you’re doing Wine. You’re both total stars.

Floisme · 16/11/2018 19:09

Welcome to the vipers' nest, Glinner and thank you for standing up for women.

You too Jonny.

IfNotNowBernard · 16/11/2018 19:18

Ooh a celeb! I don't do Twitter but I know about you from this place ( and the lovely telly stuff). Good to see you. My favourite Black Books episode is when Manny gets a job in the corporate bookshop next door. When I was a lone parent of a baby ( now a teen) Black Books episides were my company and my light relief. I'm so glad the chap who wrote it is a stand up guy.

Guys, would you do me a favour and use this thread to share the moments where you realised something was wrong? Links, anecdotes, experiences of harassment, whatever you have. I 'd like if this became a useful thread for people who are still confused by the issue.

GRAHAM you're awesome.

JillyArmeeen · 16/11/2018 19:23

Thank you both so much for speaking out and being on our side.
It really means an awful lot when times get tough and the doubts creep in.
I will repay the favour by watching everything you ever wrote..
Where do I start on Netflix...

NonHypotheticalLurkingParent · 16/11/2018 19:24

Glinner - I’d like to say thank you as well. Dd identified as trans for 4 years. To protect her, I don’t do Twitter or much social media, but I do read it! I have so much admiration for those who speak up in public.

However, I am very vocal to the numerous professionals - teachers, psyologists, psychiatrists, etc - that I encounter navigating dd’s mental health issues.

Every little bit of speaking out helps, even if it’s just recommending people read Transgender Trend, 4thWaveNow, etc, to counter what Mermaids et al have to offer.

The works outing!
Yes. So brilliant Grin

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 16/11/2018 19:26

It started for me when the petition went out to move Tara Hudson into a male prison. Hudson was being portrayed on TV as vulnerable & fragile. Only I'd read that this was a violent 5'10' male who touted his 'seven-inch surprise' on sex sites.

This was about the time when the Women's Equality Party was getting started & a lot of us were excited & hopeful about that. They did a guest post here, about the same time as tweeting in support of Hudson. Which we thought had to be a mistake, surely?

Eventually, after a lot of posting & tweeting, we managed to get Sophie Walker's attention. She came over here & confirmed that yes, WEP supported Hudson & believed that a woman was anyone who thought they were one.

That was when I realised that a) there was a big problem here & b) we couldn't assume that anyone would be on our side, however feminist they claimed to be.

FermatsTheorem · 16/11/2018 19:26

It's hard to put my finger on exactly which incident among many made me feel "something's not right here", but stand-out moments certainly include Caitlyn Jenner getting "woman of the year" while Rachel Dolzeal was getting vilified at exactly the same time; the Guardian reporting Lauren Jeska's attempted murder of Ralph Knibbs (who incidentally is an absolute hero - turned down an international rugby career because he wasn't prepared to tour Apartheid South Africa, that's principled), where the fact that Jeska was trans wasn't mentioned, despite it being the motive for the crime; the cotton ceiling (how anyone can not recognise that for the deeply rapey set of attitudes it is?)
