Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Pile on by TRAs

I am in the middle of a pile on by TRA's on Twitter.

I am not comfortable sharing my anonymous Twitter username on even here yet, but I wanted to ask, when trying to explain your viewpoint on feminism, and you become the subject of a pile on, what do you do?

I am stuck between not giving up, but the more I reply, the more of them pile on.

Help.

You are not arguing with them! Don't ever treat it as that.

Your audience is the silent reader.

Treat it like that and you will feel better and see it in a different light.

wopbamboo · 09/11/2018 16:44

Yeah thats fine, I can do that. Wont be silenced though. Its not my proper Twitter anyway.

I just LOL them, or point out the male pattern rage they are displaying.

deepwatersolo · 09/11/2018 16:46

I would tell them that they should come back once they can define 'woman'. Before that is really pointless to discuss with them because they don't really know what they are talking about. Using words you can't define leads to meaningless blabber.

After that I'd disengage. Or repeat ad infinitum to anything: 'First define 'woman'!'

Frankly, I will never understand why people waste their energy discussing with people who can't even define the words they use.

BreakWindandFire · 09/11/2018 16:51

I've followed you. Solidarity. But you've been linked to here by a TRA.

gamerchick · 09/11/2018 16:51

have a cis guy telling me women arent oppressed and death threats are part of every day life hmm

I have 2 cis women telling me I am 'gatekeeping womanhoood' and we dont stand to lose anything by extending rights

Why are you cissing on here?

WarmWishes · 09/11/2018 16:53

Just seen who it is. Most of those have blocked me. ** 💪💪

CottonTailRabbit · 09/11/2018 16:57

The TRAs are zealots. You will not ever change their POV through Twitter (or ever). A lot of people lurk and read. They are your audience. You don't have to respond to batshit statements or personal attacks. Just leave them hanging.

Remember too that attention seeking types are far more upset by being ignored than by being argued with or laughed at. So ignore them.

The moment they come out with something a normal person would say You what?! at then your work is done. Say no more.

You must be doing something right if you've been targetted.

WarmWishes · 09/11/2018 17:06

They treat twitter wars like a full time job. Honestly pathetic. I can't read what the thread is about properly because my twitter keeps glitching. From what I can see they are trotting out the same old tropes.

wopbamboo · 09/11/2018 17:07

Soz Gamerchick! I didn't even realise that I did it. I don't normally. Won't again.

have a cis guy telling me...

Woke beardy dude-bro, just loving the way he can tell women what to do/think with impunity, I imagine.

I have 2 cis women telling me...

Mmm. IME there are a fair few TAs who claim to be "cis" to try and sway arguments - I've seen a couple uncovered recently, by great twitter-detectives who have found related blogs/tweets relating to their "transition" or "taking hormones".

Otherwise, I would called them "friends of Serena Joy" and block them.

Iused2BanOptimist · 09/11/2018 17:11

I'll reply maybe twice then no further engagement. If you're in the middle of a pile on I would make my account private for a day or two til they move on to another target and block the worst/most suspicious.

WarmWishes · 09/11/2018 17:12

Now I am curious toe to toe?????

RottingGooseflesh · 09/11/2018 17:15

Ignore them or just tell them to fuck off
Honestly
80% of people on twitter act like dicks, if its not this it'll be something else eventually.

gamerchick · 09/11/2018 17:19

Soz Gamerchick! I didn't even realise that I did it. I don't normally. Won't again.

You don't have to apologise to me. Smile

FloralBunting · 09/11/2018 17:23

Yeah, that's not going to be pleasant, AWAs like Hetty Spoon and co. are like Goady Fuckers from AIBU on speed. Personally, once piece is said I'd probably lock my account for a while and block them before returning. I'm very much not for making Twitter an echo chamber, but once some of those tweeters get the bit between their teeth, they will probably be quite dogged in pursuit. To mix some metaphors.

Silentlyobserving · 09/11/2018 17:31

You do realise of course that this thread is being trolled and comments on this thread are being copied and pasted.

SlowlyShrinking · 09/11/2018 17:35

🤷‍♀️

BlytheSpiritsSpirit · 09/11/2018 17:42

Saddos.

wopbamboo · 09/11/2018 18:06

yep saddos. I blocked the woman who linked to mumsnet so I cant see what she is saying.

I might go private but I am talking to a reasonable woman who has some interesting arguments atm, which is the kind of discussion I'd like to have on there.

Thanks for the advice though, I will look up debating techniques and block/mute more frequently. :-)

Ask them if they think humans can change sex.

Funny, but even the most rabid advocates will never reply to me with a ‘yes.’

So I can only conclude they don’t actually believe it either.

Which then raises the question of why an entire belief system is based on something no one actually believes.

wopbamboo · 09/11/2018 19:42

I dont think they truly believe it either, I think they are desperately trying to look virtuous.

Yep! I'm cheerful and polite but I keep asking them questions and pointing out their dodges. That's all, they usually go off in a huff lol.

Bowlofbabelfish · 09/11/2018 19:45

Ask them. Don’t stand for any waffle about gender or ‘it being complicated.’ It isnt.

Can humans change sex?

If yes, how? (And have the Nobel prize committee number handy, their search is over!)

If no, then what on Earth are they basing all this on?

BlackeyedGruesome · 09/11/2018 19:46

My KS2 child says got owned. That language makes me think they are using a similar level of communication.
