Being a trans ally: a guide for handmaidens

Haworthia · 28/10/2018 16:45

One of my female friends shared this on Twitter

Is it me, or does this just smack of men telling women what to do, in a rather “1950s guide to being a housewife” kind of way?

Be kind, courteous, patient and caring with people! Smile! [what does this have to do with trans issues?]
Apologise! [for being female]
Think about how privileged and entitled you are! [when it comes to accessing female spaces]
Think about inclusion! [affirm trans people at work and socially]
Physically protect trans women at risk of violence! [um?]

sympathies. I have somebody on my fb, she's so 'woke' but she. does. not. get . it.

Reading that thing how to be a trans ally thing, wow, ''think about how privileged and entitled you are''! ffs. I want to be an ally to women, the type of woman who is disadvantaged due to her biology. Ironic isn't it, that trans women deserved everybody to work together to protect them from violence!!

ILuvBirdsEye · 28/10/2018 16:51

OMG FO!

ILuvBirdsEye · 28/10/2018 16:56

Not you OP. You have it right. It's like those guides to being a good little wifey...

FekkoThePenguin · 28/10/2018 16:58

🤢🤮

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/10/2018 16:58

Seconding the fuck.off.

Big strong man needs cisgender woman as human shield .

Cowardly.

FermatsTheorem · 28/10/2018 17:01

Yes Giles, I was thinking "Infront" - WTF? Mind you this is exactly what the TRAs are constantly doing when they invite "cis" women to come to the fore in picketing women's place meetings because (DARVO again), they'll be "less at risk..."

Fifties housewife is exactly it.

NotANotMan · 28/10/2018 17:01

That was literally posted on the homepage of Brighton and hove Council's intranet this summer

Iused2BanOptimist · 28/10/2018 17:21

"Those faux-feminists who suck up to them – the majority of whom tend to be the Violet Elizabeth Bott Tendency of SJWs – are little more than the Surrendered Wives of the Woke."

Can't put it any better than Julie Burchill.

You have got to be fucking kidding me

“I’m so sorry I was born female and don’t get your plight”

Give me a fucking break already. You’re a dude. Get over it

AncientLights · 28/10/2018 17:32

Since TRAs are constantly aligning themselves with a) intersex people b) people of colour c) gay people - have those groups ever had a similar document put out either by themselves or on their behalf (by a council etc)? I can't recall such a thing. How the fuck these precious snowflakes get to be so vewy, vewy speshul (chanelling my inner Violet Elizabeth Bott there sarcastically) so they get this treatment? FFS!!!! [SCREAM FACE] why isn't there one?

merrymouse · 28/10/2018 17:36

I really don't like the trend for claiming 'ally' status, in particular, when 'A' is added to a long string of letters starting with LGB.

People don't deserve rights because they are your special friends, they deserve rights or services regardless of who they are.

Katie Hopkins isn't my 'ally', but she should not suffer discrimination because she is female.

In particular it seems that trans, and by extension female rights are supposed to be applied on a 'case by case' basis, and that everything should be fine because it's possible to exclude the 'wrong' kind of people and rights are only for our lovely, gorgeous friends, which obviously is a load of bollocks.

I only log into the network occasionally (contractor) I’m glad I didn’t see it.

Ta1kinpeace · 28/10/2018 17:53

The current issue of The Economist has made this topic their lead subject ....

FermatsTheorem · 28/10/2018 17:56

I liked the comment on that twitter feed someone linked to the other day - something along the lines of "Much as I'd love to help you, I can't get out from under the bus."

breastfeedingclownfish · 28/10/2018 17:58

That Julie Burchill article is completely brilliant and on the nose

badtime · 28/10/2018 17:58

merry, the 'A' is supposed to be for 'asexual', but people who are sad that they are not included in the list use it for 'ally'.

breastfeedingclownfish · 28/10/2018 18:02

And the Economist one is horrifying.

breastfeedingclownfish · 28/10/2018 18:03

"JY had mentioned using a women’s gym, and the lawyers presented evidence to the tribunal that JY had also talked about being a trans woman online—in posts asking for advice on how to approach a naked ten-year-old girl to ask for a tampon, and whether it is appropriate to show a young girl how to use it. JY denied writing the posts, said the account had been hacked, and withdrew the case. Over a dozen cases brought by JY against other women who offer Brazilian-waxing services continue."

breastfeedingclownfish · 28/10/2018 18:05

I can't read the OP link - too small. Can anyone link to source?

AngryAttackKittens · 28/10/2018 18:07

"Being a willing and enthusiastic servant"

LangCleg · 28/10/2018 18:21

How to be the best doormat you can be.

I think not.

wingwarbler · 28/10/2018 18:22

WTF is up with that claimant JY in Canada? If there wasn't something in the claims they would not have withdrawn the suit. V v disturbing.

The poster is such a work of manipulation and Darvo style grooming.

Haworthia · 28/10/2018 18:26

I LOVE that.

You know what’s most surprising about my friend and how she came to drink the Kool Aid? She’s been brainwashed by the WI. The bloody WI Hmm

"recognise the ways that being cisgender allows you to access washrooms, healthcare or transcripts with ease".

I'm assuming from the word 'washroom' (why can't they just come to terms with the fact that it's a room for toilets!) that this is American, but loads of people can't access toilets with ease, in particular because they, or people they care for, have disabilities.

Access to healthcare is limited for many people in the US, and access to the NHS is available to all British citizens. It's true that a limited amount of NHS resources are dedicated to trans people, but access to mental health resources is generally limited.

Don't know what a transcript is - did Brighton and Hove explain?

It really doesn't imagine that people's lives have any complications beyond being trans.

FekkoThePenguin · 28/10/2018 18:33

'Recognise that being a cis man means that whatever you say is gold and the stupid bitches have to comply' did I miss that bit?
