Oxford Student newspaper doxes Twitter account by possible criminal unauthorised use of a comptuer system

Heads up.

www.oxfordstudent.com/2018/10/26/transphobic-tweets-linked-to-oxford-sociology-professor/

"The Twitter account, named Henry Wimbush and still online at the time of publication, has been tweeting statements such as “transphobia is a word created by fascists, and used by cowards, to manipulate morons” since first Tweeting in January.

"it was found that the account in question could be linked to a partial phone number and Yahoo! email using freely available data and by making use of Twitter’s various functions. The Yahoo! email itself is also linked to a phone number ending in the same numbers as those previously identified, while also revealing that it is connected to the" [partially redacted email]

How this hack works:

go to twitter.com/login

click 'forgotten your password'

type in your username, or a third party's username

you will get a message something like this:

We found the following information associated with your account.
Text a code to my phone ending in 12.
Email a link to ab*********@a.**

Note that:

  • the last digits of the phone number can be used to tie your account to any phone number, since there are obviously 100 different combinations, so if it matches a phone number known by the doxer, it essentially identifies you
  • I'm not clear exactly how much information is given on email addresses in every case, but at a minimum you get the first two letters of the username (before the @), the first two letters of the domain name (the bit after the @), and the exact length of both parts of the address.

So for example, if you signed up, anonymously, to Twitter using the email address justine*@mumsnet.com, then it would show to any attacker ju******@mu.** if they tried to recover it in order to dox the owner.

The use of this feature in order to dox people most likely constitutes an offence under the Computer Misuse Act s1 as the use of this feature to dox people is clearly not authorised by Twitter, and I would encourage those affected to report the people involved to the police.

Hence I am not repeating the criminally obtained dox of the person, and I would encourage people NOT the repeat the name in this thread.

Note that this doxing follows quite soon from Aimee Challenor boasting of outing Miranda Yardley's Twitter account using the same means.

Whether there are more serious offences committed is hard to say, as the doxing itself is obviously a preparatory act to having people fired, harassed, threatened, family & children harassed, and so on, but the doing so is not necessarily planned by the original doxer so it would be hard to prove a more serious offence.

I would advise those who are on Twitter and are not using their real name to create a gmail/yahoo/other anonymous webmail account, matching the twitter username (so if you are @ARealRadFem on Twitter, make a yahoo mail account [email protected]). In terms of the phone verification that's a little trickier as the 1/100 last two digits is VERY outing if they have a suspicion who you are, but otherwise completely useless. I have had some luck in the past with adding an extra digit (so if you are 07812 456789, you can add an extra digit on like this 07812 4567890, and verification phone calls still work), but YMMV on that.

OP posts:
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/10/2018 22:37

I follow him, and I don't remember anything particularly offensive or beyond the pale.

He was fairly critical of TRAs and their dogma though which I imagine will be seen in some quarters as literal violence.

R0wantrees · 26/10/2018 22:42

OrangeStudent seemed very well-informed and had this as prime example:

Well he intentionally, repeatedly and maliciously misgendered people, such as New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard.

One would presume that the 'journalists' would also publish what might be the most damning of 'evidence', see link to article in OP.

JustABrokenDoll · 26/10/2018 22:49

@RedHoodGirl

Michael Biggs hasn't deleted tweets to the best of my knowledge. There will be cached versions online anyway even if the original tweets were deleted. The Twitter account in question hasn't been active since June/July 2018.

I don't remember the MrHenryWimbush account tweeting anything transphobic and I'm pretty active on Twitter. There will be cached versions online anyway even if the original tweets were deleted.

All the authors of that so-called exposé have are what they printed in the article. Sweet FA.

JustABrokenDoll · 26/10/2018 22:50

Oops, doubled up on my 'cached' comment there.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 26/10/2018 23:36

Ref students sacking professors - I just stumbled on this: mobile.twitter.com/thewhitepube/status/1055868104553701377

  • it seems the tutor is/was gender critical.
Mamaryllis · 27/10/2018 04:25

I’ve been following the account for a while. He’s not transphobic. He’s critical of trans ideology and it being imposed on individuals, and doesn’t suffer fools (men who believe that feelings make them literal women) gladly.
I’m still laughing at the stunning surprise that a professor who publishes gender critical articles is, um, gender critical. Grin
No shit, sherlock.
I knew I knew the name Mac Harrison from somewhere though. Ah, sprouty. What an utter embarrassment for Oxford to be tied up with that shit show...

frogsoup · 27/10/2018 05:22

I don't doubt it happens at some universities, Scrimshaw, especially in the US, but a tenured academic at Oxford? Not a snowball's chance in hell.

Coyoacan · 27/10/2018 06:29

I really do think you should get back to your books, Orange. You've had your arse handed to you on a plate by a bunch of mere women.

Facebook rules on using your real name are very limiting, especially for the millions of people who live under dictatorships. I had to change my name because of a run in with someone from the ruling political party where I live. I'm not significant but what are significant people supposed to do?

Needmoresleep · 27/10/2018 06:46

The Liverpool John Moores University stuff in the tweet above is shocking. An Oxford academic will survive bullying from the herd, but not academics without tenure from more obscure Universities. The LJMU administration should be ashamed.

Velella · 27/10/2018 07:00

Orange, can I offer a couple of suggestions for improving the student article?

Most worryingly it confuses suicide, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts using figures as comparators across these three things as though they were equal. They are not. And given the gravity of the subject it is vital to get it right. For credibility's sake I am sure you don't want people to think you are deliberately trying to mislead.

Secondly, it would be balanced to provide the actual link to the Professor's blog. You have not been so reluctant with his other personal info, after all.

ChillieJeanie · 27/10/2018 07:27

Oi ADropofReality I take issue with that slur on Oriel! Unless it has dramatically changed since I went up in the late 90s, we wouldn't have had any truck with this sort of OxStu nonsense! There was a campaign at Oriel to disaffiliate from OUSU on the basis that they were a bunch of idiots who did nothing for students and we would be better off spending the money on a bigger Sky package for the TV room. It did eventually succeed, although after my time sadly. Oriel had previously dissafiliated from the NUS for much the same reason.

GCAcademic · 27/10/2018 07:47

The LJMU incident is akin to no-platforming, which I'm sure the Universities Minister and Office for Students would be keen to hear about, as they are taking an interest in these matters at the moment and have already given universities a warning about their responsibilities towards free speech:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.telegraph.co.uk/education/2018/05/03/universities-no-platform-controversial-speakers-will-face-government/amp

The no-platforming has been conducted by the university, this time, rather than the SU, which is disgraceful. Nina, or any students who have missed out on her teaching, should get in touch with Sam Gyimah's office and the OfS.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 27/10/2018 09:31

It seems to me all this stuff is in clear breach of the Equality Act which protects against discrimination on the basis of belief (including philosophical belief). Neither Prof Biggs nor Nina Edge have been outed as saying anything hateful or threatening. The harassment and Edge's sacking are because of their beliefs wrt biological sex being different from gender identity.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 27/10/2018 09:57

frogsoup Nina Edge situation is in the UK - Liverpool John Moores.

I don't know much about the situation other than that twitter thread, but as someone that works freelance in this field, it's appalling, if not entirely surprising, that someone would lose their job over their views.

frogsoup · 27/10/2018 10:32

Yes, sorry, I wasn't too with it at 5am Grin It's atrocious, don't get me wrong - if I were an academic without tenure at a new university id be keeping my mouth firmly shut. But in terms of Oxford, I do think our friends above has delusions of grandeur of he thinks students can force the sacking of a tenured professor. Oxford is still an extremely traditional place, which is a bad thing in many respects, but is probably a good thing in terms of the chances of them kowtowing to Stalinist demands by woke students (which is approximately zero).

frogsoup · 27/10/2018 10:32

*our friend above

frogsoup · 27/10/2018 10:33

Arg sorry, multiple typos - it was a bad night!!!

JillyArmeeen · 27/10/2018 10:58

I hadn't thought about people living under dictatorships with regards to Facebook names.
It also affects stalking and abuse victims who are using fake or variations of their own name to stay safe.
People with very unusual names, a man from a native tribe in America with the name Bear something, Facebook would not believe it was his real name, lots of other native people complaining about having the same problem, including one woman who actually worked for Facebook.
Trans people, unless they have legally changed their name.
If someone reports the name they have to give proof or lose their account.
Which im guessing is how someone knew to use the report name function as a weapon against me for being gc.

RedToothBrush · 27/10/2018 11:17

It's worrying most because of what Oxford churns out as influential people in positions of power after they leave uni.

In thinking this type of behaviour is acceptable, think of the implications for society a few years down the line.

GCAcademic · 27/10/2018 11:27

It's worrying most because of what Oxford churns out as influential people in positions of power after they leave uni

Yes, this. I am not at all worried that Oxford might sack Michael Biggs. That is simply not going to happen. It's the fascism that's coming when these Hitler Youth 2.0 kids get out into the world that's frightening. Working in a university and seeing how people will keep silent, even when they have the academic freedom to do otherwise, does not make me confident that our democracy can resist these fascists.

DaisyTwirl · 27/10/2018 11:29

While this could refer to Oxford Brookes, the account references an update to their employer’s trans policies in a Tweet in February 2018. Oxford University last updated its transgender guidelines in March 2018, while Brookes’ was in May 2017

Thanks to their sterling journalistic prowess, I was alerted to the fact that the other university had not recently updated their policy so I went & checked.

They have 'gender' instead of 'sex' as a protected characteristic 🙄

I have contacted them to alert them to their error.
Hopefully they'll update accordingly...!

LangCleg · 27/10/2018 12:02

It's worrying most because of what Oxford churns out as influential people in positions of power after they leave uni

Yes. The next leaders of the NSPCC, for example.

The liberal academy has a lot to answer for.

Bonions · 27/10/2018 12:07

Shon Faye graduated from there in the last decade.

How many of Corbyn's inner circle are OxBridge?
