Science post on fb explaining transgender

*I just commented this on a transphobic post that was all like, "In a sexual species, females have two X chromosomes and males have an X and a Y, I'm not a bigot it's just science." I'm a science teacher so I responded with this.

First of all, in a sexual species, you can have females be XX and males be X (insects), you can have females be ZW and males be ZZ (birds), you can have females be females because they developed in a warm environment and males be males because they developed in a cool environment (reptiles), you can have females be females because they lost a penis sword fighting contest (some flatworms), you can have males be males because they were born female, but changed sexes because the only male in their group died (parrotfish and clownfish), you can have males look and act like females because they are trying to get close enough to actual females to mate with them (cuttlefish, bluegills, others), or you can be one of thousands of sexes (slime mold, some mushrooms.) Oh, did you mean humans? Oh ok then. You can be male because you were born female, but you have 5-alphareductase deficiency and so you grew a penis at age 12. You can be female because you have an X and a Y chromosome but you are insensitive to androgens, and so you have a female body. You can be female because you have an X and a Y chromosome but your Y is missing the SRY gene, and so you have a female body. You can be male because you have two X chromosomes, but one of your X's HAS an SRY gene, and so you have a male body. You can be male because you have two X chromosomes- but also a Y. You can be female because you have only one X chromosome at all. And you can be male because you have two X chromosomes, but your heart and brain are male. And vice - effing - versa. Don't use science to justify your bigotry. The world is way too weird for that shit.* any science people about to help unravel it?

Intersex is not trans.

Dragon3 · 26/10/2018 07:46

Search for @bowlofbabelfish on FWR, OP. She has written extensively and knowledgeably on this topic.

PyeWackets · 26/10/2018 07:47

We are sexually dimorphic mammals. Some females are orn with an intersex condition, some males are born with an intersex condition. They are still male, or female. Trans is not intersex.

Annandale · 26/10/2018 07:48

A male heart?? Is that a thing?

IdaBWells · 26/10/2018 07:49

If you find it complex a simple go-to is women don’t have penises.

QuentinWinters · 26/10/2018 07:49

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3402778-biological-sex-spectrum-research

How fish or fungi determine sex is about as relevant to humans as fish or fungi thoughts on LGBT matters.

Biology is amazing and organisms are beautifully diverse. Doesn't change the fact that humans are sexually diverse.

waterlego6064 · 26/10/2018 07:50

That science teacher post has been around for ages and debunked various times.

Mainly because it bangs on about other species, which has no relevance at all so humans.

waterlego6064 · 26/10/2018 07:51

Two X chromosomes with a male heart and brain? 😆 How is that diagnosed then?

Randomusername01 · 26/10/2018 07:53

So essentially all the variations she mentions in the bottom half are examples of intersex?

OP posts:
Scrumplestiltskin · 26/10/2018 07:53

Yeah, other species are irrelevant to humans.
But at the end of the day - what is the biological reason reproductive sex exists?
REPRODUCTION.
So what reproductive role do intersex people play? None? That's because they're not a third or fourth or fifth "sex", they're a mutation of one of the two sexes.

waterlego6064 · 26/10/2018 07:55

Yes Random, that’s my understanding.

FermatsTheorem · 26/10/2018 07:56

Intersex people have repeatedly asked for their experiences not to be hijacked to make cheap political points by the trans movement.

DSDs (disorders of sexual development) - the clue is in the name. They are disorders, i.e. things gone wrong with normal sexual development. Often (though not always) they leave the person with them infertile, so in evolutionary terms, they are a dead end. There's no third sex, no genuinely in-between but fertile people out there. There's no third gamete out there in humans.

Furthermore, trans people are not intersex. They are biologically normal, functioning individuals of their birth sex, as likely to be fertile (or suffering from fertility problems) as the rest of us - witness the number of late transitioning men who decide to identify as women in middle age, having already fathered several children.

Dragon3 · 26/10/2018 07:59

Humans are sexually dimorphic. Two gametes, ova and sperm. No other gametes exist.

Every single person on the planet was produced by the meeting of sperm and egg. Every single person belongs to the ova-producing category or the sperm-producing category. Whether or not their bodies are actually capable of producing ova or sperm.

0ccamsRazor · 26/10/2018 07:59

waterlego surely the diagnosis of a male heart and brain was able to be done by observing their colour, blue brain for boys and pink brain from girls Wink Halo

hang on before the Victorians it was pink for boys and blue for girls?

#transsexisbollocks

Gncq · 26/10/2018 08:00

And you can be male because you have two X chromosomes, but your heart and brain are male

Head-desk.

Yes all the other chromosome variations are examples of DSD which is nothing you do with trans. They are always used as a "gotcha" when someone says "humans have either XX or XY chromosomes" when trying to say you can't change sex.

Gncq · 26/10/2018 08:04

You can't self identify as someone with a DSD.

MissWilmottsGhost · 26/10/2018 08:15

Typical pseudo science - include some facts then slip in some complete bollocks and hope no one sees the join.

Same technique is used by creationists, climate change deniers, conspiracy theories etc.

There is some facts about other species (irrelevant) some facts about known chromosomal and developmental disorders (intersex) and then the bit about xx chromosomes and a male brain (bollocks).

merrymouse · 26/10/2018 08:32

The world is way too weird for that shit

Is the woke equivalent of Trump saying that climate change isn't happening because the science is too confusing.

People suffering from conditions classified as 'intersex' are not 'inbetween sexes' and they are no more 'weird' than people born with any other medical condition.

However, the main problem with the argument is that unless it is believed that all trans people are either fish, mushrooms or suffering from an intersex condition, it's completely irrelevant.

Scrumplestiltskin · 26/10/2018 08:37

You can be female because you have an X and a Y chromosome but you are insensitive to androgens, and so you have a female body.
This is called AIS, androgen insensitivity syndrome. They are males who are insensitive to the androgens in the womb which develop a fetus' male reproductive and genital organs. It varies from complete insensitivity (CAIS, with a blind partial vagina, internal improperly formed testes, and clitoris,) to PAIS (partial insensitivity with ambiguous genitals, and improperly formed gonads) to MAIS (mild insensitivity with slightly feminised genitals and undescended testes.) CAIS individuals will be infertile.

You can be female because you have an X and a Y chromosome but your Y is missing the SRY gene, and so you have a female body.
This is called Swyer syndrome. It results in a male who has a female phenotype, underdeveloped uterus, and non-functioning gonads, will not experience puberty without HRT. And will be infertile.

You can be male because you have two X chromosomes, but one of your X's HAS an SRY gene, and so you have a male body.
This is very rare, and can vary from "true hermaphroditism" (people who are sexually ambiguous with both internal and external organs,) to males with small or undescended testes who are often sterile.

You can be male because you have two X chromosomes- but also a Y.
This is called Klinefelters, and again is another male syndrome. It is when a male individual with a working SRY gene has an extra X chromosome. It femininose the male body somewhat (gynecomastia, micro penis,) and can cause intellectual development issues, infertility, and other issues.

You can be female because you have only one X chromosome at all.
This is Turner syndrome. Sufferers have a female phenotype, are generally infertile, do not go through female puberty without hormonal treatment, have a short stature, webbed neck, have heart problems, and diabetes.

These are not other sexes, these are negative disorders of the male and female sex.

Scrumplestiltskin · 26/10/2018 08:38

Please excuse my typos! My phone doesn't like the word "femininise"!

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 26/10/2018 08:43

I can help you out with clown fish. One of the unexpected benefits of MN for me, has been an insight into the biology of fucking clown fish.

Clown fish do not “change sex”. They are serial hermaphrodites, which means they are born with both male and female reproductive systems, but the female system only comes online under a specific environmental stress, ie, when the dominant female gets eaten by something. And only the dominant male brings his female bits into orbit, the rest of the clown fishes stay male.

There is no analogy there, to humans, or indeed, mammals.

A female hyena has an extremely large clitoris which looks like a penis, but she’s an example of an evolutionary quirk, not some in-between sex. Echidnas are mammals who lay eggs - but humans are not giant chickens.

Also, humans are not insects or fish, and the reproductive biology of creatures who are not human, has bearing on human biology.

AspieAndProud · 26/10/2018 08:44

Trans isn’t intersex; and intersex isn’t a third sex.

Those appropriating intersex to the trans cause need to be told, in no uncertain terms, to fuck the fuck off.

Errrrrrr · 26/10/2018 08:54

you can have males look and act like females because they are trying to get close enough to actual females to mate with them Not sure this is an analogy that the trans community wants to be promoting Confused

LangCleg · 26/10/2018 08:56

Those appropriating intersex to the trans cause need to be told, in no uncertain terms, to fuck the fuck off.

They do.

Sex is very simple. It exists for the purposes of reproduction. There are two sexes to go with the two types of gamete. There is no third sex and no third gamete. There are some developmental disorders. These have nothing to do with transgender issues.

Ereshkigal · 26/10/2018 09:02

Not sure this is an analogy that the trans community wants to be promoting

No exactly. Lots of "cuttlefishing" memes were made when this idiotic viral post first came out. Much fun was had.
