Science post on fb explaining transgender

*I just commented this on a transphobic post that was all like, "In a sexual species, females have two X chromosomes and males have an X and a Y, I'm not a bigot it's just science." I'm a science teacher so I responded with this.

First of all, in a sexual species, you can have females be XX and males be X (insects), you can have females be ZW and males be ZZ (birds), you can have females be females because they developed in a warm environment and males be males because they developed in a cool environment (reptiles), you can have females be females because they lost a penis sword fighting contest (some flatworms), you can have males be males because they were born female, but changed sexes because the only male in their group died (parrotfish and clownfish), you can have males look and act like females because they are trying to get close enough to actual females to mate with them (cuttlefish, bluegills, others), or you can be one of thousands of sexes (slime mold, some mushrooms.) Oh, did you mean humans? Oh ok then. You can be male because you were born female, but you have 5-alphareductase deficiency and so you grew a penis at age 12. You can be female because you have an X and a Y chromosome but you are insensitive to androgens, and so you have a female body. You can be female because you have an X and a Y chromosome but your Y is missing the SRY gene, and so you have a female body. You can be male because you have two X chromosomes, but one of your X's HAS an SRY gene, and so you have a male body. You can be male because you have two X chromosomes- but also a Y. You can be female because you have only one X chromosome at all. And you can be male because you have two X chromosomes, but your heart and brain are male. And vice - effing - versa. Don't use science to justify your bigotry. The world is way too weird for that shit.* any science people about to help unravel it?

The normal human karyotype has 22 autonsomes plus an X chromosome, and either another X chromosome or a Y chromosome. Any extra chromosome is a trisomy, or if theses more than one extra copy, a polysomy.

An extra X or Y chromosome is just as much an abnormality as an extra chromosome 13, 18 or 21. Anybody insisting an extra sex chromosome is part of a ‘sex spectrum’ is saying that Palau, Edwards and Downs syndromes aren’t abnormalities either. Sorry, there isn’t a ‘chromosome spectrum’ either.

Karyotypes that lead to infertility - as most of these do - cannot be defined as a reproductive sex by any stretch of the definition.

QuietContraryMary · 26/10/2018 09:10

Op:
Other animals are irrelevant.
Sex is determined by the 23rd chromosome pair, which are either X and X or or X and Y.
In rare cases you can get 3 23rd chromosomes as a genetic mutation, just as Downs syndrome occurs from an extra 21st syndrome.
We wouldn't however use disorders of sexual development if we were discussing biological sex any more than we would use characteristics of people with Downs syndrome to describe normal human development.

Some spiders and insects bite the head off the partner during copulation.

Male bedbugs forcibly penetrate the exoskeleton of the female in order to inseminate them, injuring or even killing them.

Some species of wasp paralyse catapillars and lay their eggs inside the living host to provide them with food when they hatch.

These reproductive strategies aren’t a model for human beings.

QuietContraryMary · 26/10/2018 09:10

Ooh crossposted with @aspieandproud.

you can have females be females because they lost a penis sword fighting contest

‘I lost a penis sword contest’ shouldn’t get you into a women’s prison.

That’s definitely a red flag.

LangCleg · 26/10/2018 09:19

Oh, Aspie, you are killing it of late. More power to your elbow!

AspieAndProud · 26/10/2018 09:21

Somewhere at Channel 4 a MN-lurking programme commissioner is thinking ‘A penis sword contest... hmmm...’

Ereshkigal · 26/10/2018 09:21

actually witnessed a proper penis sword contest once

Ereshkigal · 26/10/2018 09:22

In a pub lock in in a U.K. city I won't name,

reallybadidea · 26/10/2018 09:31

There may well be a biological cause for (at least some forms of) transgenderism. So what? That doesn't change the fact that transgender women's bodies are phenotypically male, that their bodies have undergone the effects of testosterone, that they have been socialised as males and have enjoyed all the benefits of male privilege for many years. Lots of psychological disorders have a genetic and/or biological element. A biological basis also doesn't justify it being the body that is 'wrong' and the brain 'right'. And it doesn't justify it being up to women to give up their rights to make male-borns happier.

Starkstaring · 26/10/2018 09:31

Found this article - relates only to early onset GD (ie from a very young age) - possible link to some studies that have shown if you born male and have a couple of older brothers you are more likely to be homosexual - people have speculated that is a mother has several pregnancies with male children, something changes with the hormones in utero.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3338001/

I am not a scientist and have only skim-read the article!

AspieAndProud · 26/10/2018 09:35

You can be male because you were born female, but you have 5-alphareductase deficiency and so you grew a penis at age 12.

This is a condition affecting male sexual development. They may appear to be female but they are male. When puberty kicks in they develop male psysiology, albeit underdeveloped and infertile without assistance. There’s a village in the Dominican Republic where this condition is quite common and it is known as ‘huevos a los doce’ (testicles at age 12).

Not a great idea for TRAs to bring this one up since puberty blockers would prevent this postponed stage of development.

I mean, what if a child who is apparently a girl believes (correctly in this case) she is a boy?

Puberty blockers would prevent a natural transition to boyhood.

Cockfighting is banned for good reason.

😂😂😂

Unsurprisingly the post is very much concerned with the appearance, not the function of organs.

Anything that looks like a penis is a penis and anything that looks like a vagina is a vagina. It’s all cosmetic.

waterlego6064 · 26/10/2018 10:02

Aspie, I too am really enjoying your posts recently. You explain your ideas so well, and you make me laugh!

Noqont · 26/10/2018 10:23

Typical pseudo science - include some facts then slip in some complete bollocks and hope no one sees the join

This.

Ereshkigal · 26/10/2018 12:39

Cockfighting is banned for good reason.

They literally called it that. It was all "roll up roll up for tonight's cock fight". It was a thing there.

Ereshkigal · 26/10/2018 12:39

They had a league.

AspieAndProud · 26/10/2018 12:46

Now I’m getting flashbacks to some Eighties comedy movie where two men had a ‘lightsaber’ duel in the dark wearing fluorescent condoms.

The most worrying thing is I’m not sure it was a real film or if I dreamt it.

TheGoddessFrigg · 26/10/2018 12:50

And you can be male because you have two X chromosomes, but your heart and brain are male

How can body organs have a sex? What's a MALE heart? Is it blue?

AspieAndProud · 26/10/2018 12:50

It was Blake Edward’s Skin Deep

Annandale · 26/10/2018 14:29

Well presumably there is a male heart: ie it's bigger, and don't cross-sex heart transplants fail or something? But the key fact here would be that male hearts of this sort are very much not found in an XX body.

UpstartCrow · 26/10/2018 14:40

If you have a male heart or kidney or brain its because the DNA in your heart or kidney or brain has male XY chromosomes; the same as in your penis.
