The hypocrisy of Owen Jones & Co

Owen Jones has retweeted Shon Fae who was alarmed that the anti trans hate group (!) FPFW had talked about handing out leaflets to people in the street, including ‚gangs of lads‘.
Owen is anxious ‚where will this end?‘, apparently sharing Shon‘s assessment that this incites violence.

Which makes me wonder: do they actually think, male violence is a thing? If I were on Twitter, I‘d ask them, why they paint men as violent, just because some bad apples, NAMALT and all...
It is funny how they thought all was hunky dory when the (male) TRAs were only confronted with women to harass and beat up, but now that these hateful creatures involve males (also: did they think those blokes would not notice when their mum is in a ward together with a male or their girlfriend is upset about changing room issues? Should men have no say in the GRA consultation? This is all so silly...)

Ooh, I enjoyed that heated encounter, thank you James. fans self in manner of swooning Victorian lady

deepwatersolo · 18/10/2018 16:32

Kirkup nails it, and that the attacked woman, a sexual violence survivor, would have loved to meet a labour pol but none would have her, contrary to Davies (as she points out) speaks volumes. Engineering a Nodebate environment and then smearing women for anyone who will still listen - how pathetic can it get?

His other book is 'The Establishment. And How They Get Away With It'

Was it a ‘How to’ guide?

SPOFS · 18/10/2018 16:39

Ah Little OJ, the Guardian's answer to Katie Hopkins. I wonder how much money he has lost the Guardian? He must cost them more than he makes. I know plenty who have stopped reading because of him.

gendercritter · 18/10/2018 16:39

I genuinely used to think OJ was clever Blush

AngryAttackKittens · 18/10/2018 16:55

Man Katie really is a nasty piece of work, isn't he? Of course he doesn't have the nerve to take on Kirkup, and will instead find some more women to bully.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 18/10/2018 16:56

Wee Owen got owned.

KatherinaMinola · 18/10/2018 17:00

Oh thank you for posting that James Kirkup tweet.

Owen Jones is a misogynist. We all know this.

Pamspeople · 18/10/2018 17:07

I'm so ashamed but feel the need to confess. I used to think he was cute.

I had no idea.

AngryAttackKittens · 18/10/2018 17:11

Is that gif of him making air quotes at the idea of women's rights real?

Beesandfrogsandfleas · 18/10/2018 17:19

Love it. Could he have a turn at that doctor bloke now?

Lysistrataknowsherstuff · 18/10/2018 17:31

Just seen this on Twitter:

Has he resigned from the Guardian??

Halfeatentoast · 18/10/2018 17:31

pam admitting you have or had a problem is the first step. You're very brave.

Ironically the words I have to describe Owen are all genitalia.

HemanOrSheRa · 18/10/2018 17:33

It's this one AAK. If you click on the link in my post it moves Grin.

AngryAttackKittens · 18/10/2018 17:34

Who else would hire him at this point, though? Surely he's not that dim.

Pamspeople · 18/10/2018 17:34

Thank you for your support at this difficult time halfeaten, I feel glad to have unburdened myself.

Doesn't it occur to these lefty blokes that for a group of mainly leftwing feminists and trade unionists to be relying on a hard right tory might say something about how the left has utterly failed us?

hackmum · 18/10/2018 17:37

Who else would employ him? It’s the only leftish paper there is.

ginandbearit · 18/10/2018 17:39

Private Eye also nailed his less than perfect lefty right on ness this week re his support for the re launched Tribune which underpaid then sacked three reporters , one of whom dared to reply to LOJ on twitter and was prompltly blocked . Coward .

TwistedStitch · 18/10/2018 17:52

He'd fit in at the Mirror. His twitter feed is often a carbon copy of Kevin Maguire's and their recent coverage of Rachel McKinnon consisted of focusing on the apparent abuse RM had received, and a long quote by RM comparing their treatment to racism. They also ran a story a while ago stating that 3 year olds being referred to gender clinics had the 'condition' of being born in the wrong body.

They have a couple of columnists who have previously been pretty good on women's issues- total silence on the GRA.

Melanippe · 18/10/2018 17:57

I don't think it occurs to men like Owen Jones that women are capable of rational thought unless what they're thinking chimes in with whatever he believes this week. It has been striking that he has happily flip-flopped on pretty much every subject he's ever opined on other than the one where he gets to tell women what to think, be and do. He now obviously hates and distrusts the working class man he pretended to champion, his support for Corbyn waxes and wanes like the moon, but being able to give free rein to his inbuilt misogyny has been such a heady drug for him that he's been unable to stop snorting it.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/10/2018 18:18

'Doesn't it occur to these lefty blokes that for a group of mainly leftwing feminists and trade unionists to be relying on a hard right tory might say something about how the left has utterly failed us?'

I think the fact they don't shows how much they fail to take women seriously as political beings.

AngryAttackKittens · 18/10/2018 18:20

This was the one I meant.

OunceOfFlounce · 18/10/2018 18:22

It's actually quite hard for me to take. I've always liked him, and think he's a great explainer of how to look at everyday issues and policy from a left-wing perspective for people who don't have a good grounding in politics. I would never have believed he could get this so wrong!

I remember when Julian Assange was getting called in for questioning, OJ was one of the only left wing people I heard saying rape allegations couldn't just be shrugged off because wikileaks. (There may've been many more but I wasn't very up on current affairs then and it just made an impression on me).

I think he's decided there's a direct comparison between trans rights and gay rights and, as a gay man, wants to fight what he probably decided early on as the same bigotry. Also, he stuck with Corbyn during the coup and was blamed by almost the entire PLP for what they thought would be Labour's demise. He was proved right at the last general election and I think this has just made him really double down and dismiss any doubts/doubters. Plus he's found his people now. For a long time he was the only young, left-of-centre, labour supporting commentator regularly doing the rounds but now he's got people like Ash Sarker and Aaron Bastani to sure each other up in their beliefs and be all 'fuck the haters'.

This is getting crazy long, and sorry for the pop psychology. But just to say I can see how he found himself here, and even understand to a certain extent, but cannot believe the misogyny and lack of critical thinking he's shown. I feel so let down.

HemanOrSheRa · 18/10/2018 18:23

Ah no. That gif gives me The Rage AAK.
