Oh my GOD!!! I wonder whether they will have a gender critical theologian on tomorrow?

OP posts:

Only when a bloody pig joins the Red Arrows.

kesstrel · 09/10/2018 07:54

Not sure I can bear to listen. What was said?

Starkstaring · 09/10/2018 07:56

The Adam and Eve bit was presumably straight out of queer theology.

Gentlygently · 09/10/2018 07:57

I think the general gist was ‘it is ok to debate and to be worried, but when you meet a transgender person you will realise they aren’t scary’.

ChrysanthemumsAreMums · 09/10/2018 07:58

Was it Anne Atkins?

AnchorMum · 09/10/2018 08:00

Just listened. I am trying not to cry. So liberal, so accepting, it's all so wonderful to have a trans child.

Is that woman's child going to cut 'their' breasts off? Are 'they' going to inject themselves life long with testosterone?

Has this woman's child cut her off because trans lives are not a debate?

This was framed. We're all being framed. It's not as simple as 'my child is still beautiful no matter how they present.'

I am so so sick of this shit.

Interviewee1001 · 09/10/2018 08:00

Not Anne Atkins, Rabbi with a non-binary child (27 years old now).

OldCrone · 09/10/2018 08:00

It was a rabbi talking about her non-binary child (previously known as her daughter).

On the plus side she did say that people should be allowed to ask questions and disagree with changes to the GRA without being called transphobic.

LizzieSiddal · 09/10/2018 08:01

We need to do a mass complaining session.

Interviewee1001 · 09/10/2018 08:02

Another plus was it raised awareness of the consultation I suppose.

tediousnamechange · 09/10/2018 08:02

Yes it was peppered with woke you're a bigot don't fear what you don't understand language.

RandomlyChosenName · 09/10/2018 08:04

But she's said that those asking questions just didn't understand yet, so it was ok for them to ask questions to be educate. At least, that's how I understood it.

She also said her child was gender neutral, not a trans man. I assume therefore hormones and surgery won't be considered?

QuaterMiss · 09/10/2018 08:08

It was a little ... eyebrow-raising.

Interviewee1001 · 09/10/2018 08:10

I wonder what Thal (sp?) does for a living. They are entering peak-childbearing-age discrimination age.... wonder if their non-binary status will protect them from sex discrimination.

VickyEadie · 09/10/2018 08:12

I think the general gist was ‘it is ok to debate and to be worried, but when you meet a transgender person you will realise they aren’t scary’.

The rabbi has clearly not bumped into Jacinta Brooks, Karen White et al in a dark alleyway.

This over-generalisation that trans = fluffy bunnies gets right on my pip.

deepwatersolo · 09/10/2018 08:12

But she's said that those asking questions just didn't understand yet, so it was ok for them to ask questions to be educate. At least, that's how I understood it.

This is the neoliberal mantra and I am so sick of it. If people are against fracking, TTIP, males in female spaces, EU expansion to Turkey, a military intervention, nuclear war.... you name it, the only reason is that the issue in question hasn't been explained well enough and the political establishment must do a better job explaining.

I am so sick of it.

boatyardblues · 09/10/2018 08:12

Glad to see a thread in this. Yes, the TL:DR version was that questions are OK because it comes from a place of ignorance, but when we understand we’ll realise how special, wonderful and vulnerable trans people are and be more understanding.

OldCrone · 09/10/2018 08:13

I think I've seen somewhere that female non-binary people often have their breasts removed and take testosterone.

I really don't understand the concept of non-binary - as far as I can tell from the way it's described, we are all non-binary. But don't need surgery, obviously.

Bezalelle · 09/10/2018 08:14

Infuriating.

As a Reform Jew, I feel let down by Rabbi Janner Klausner.

I never thought I would ever say this about an issue, but Orthodox Judaism actually represents my views on this better than Reform.

OldCrone · 09/10/2018 08:19

But she's said that those asking questions just didn't understand yet, so it was ok for them to ask questions to be educate. At least, that's how I understood it.

Once people are allowed to ask questions they will hear all sides, including what is being discussed here, so they will be educated about Jacinta Brooks, Karen White et al as well as the fluffy bunnies.

PartridgeInAFairTree · 09/10/2018 08:19

'It's understandable for those that are ignorant to want to ask questions.'

Thats the gist I got.

WTF. This needs balancing on the same slot tomorrow.

AnchorMum · 09/10/2018 08:22

It set the argument out as simple. She called her child trans - even though it sounded like her child was non-binary and wasn't having invasive procedures.

What are the public to make of this skewing of language? How can anyone understand what is going on when non binary is described as trans.

It made me as a parent, going through the absolute hell of this, feel utterly desperate. Every day we are fighting to keep our sanity within the distorted delusions that are being presented to us.

It ignored any of the bigger issues by saying that at the end of the day, no matter
whether we find it hard or disagree, every individual has the right to present their truth to the world - and difficult though it might be we've just got to accept that our children are still just as beautiful and amazing.

Regardless of the consequences, regardless of facts, truths and boundaries. Regardless of issues around safeguarding. Regardless.

LizzieSiddal · 09/10/2018 08:22

I wonder if there has ever been another occasion during Thought For The Day, where listeners were encouraged to fill out a govt consultation?

kesstrel · 09/10/2018 08:25

So conflating "social acceptance of trans people as trans" with "accepting self-ID". Because the two are obviously the same thing. Right.

The BBc's bias on this is absolutely horrific.

NoSquirrels · 09/10/2018 08:26

I wonder if there has ever been another occasion during Thought For The Day, where listeners were encouraged to fill out a govt consultation?

It’s supposed to be non partisan, isn’t it? Bloody hell.
