My friend just posted this on Facebook this morning. She isn't on MN so I have her permission to share. She would really like more people, especially people with ASD or who have children with ASD, to write to NAS thanking them for their willingness to listen and their agreement that Mermaids is not reputable.

This is really great news so please can we keep this bumped and shared. Thank you.

If posters on the SEN board would like to share that would also be great (if appropriate).

Dear XXXX ,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the Gender and autism page on our website.

I’m writing to let you know that I’ve raised your concerns regarding Mermaids UK, one of the organisations we link to on our Gender and autism page, with a number of teams within the National Autistic Society. In light of the concerns raised in your message, and of other feedback that we have received, we have decided to remove all links to Mermaids UK from our website, while we take the time to consult with relevant professionals and to reconsider which organisations we wish to place links to on our website.

As such, our Web Team are working to remove all links to Mermaids UK from our website as soon as possible. Please do be aware, however, that, as we are currently in the process of updating our website to reflect our new branding and organisational identity, it may take a few days for this to be actioned.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention, and I hope that you are satisfied with the actions we are taking in light of the concerns that you have raised.

Kind regards,

National Autistic Society

Even after Dr Webberley was ordered by a Judge to stop running her clinic which violated Care Standards Act, mermaids carried on promoting her and sending children to her.

This wasn't because of the childrens best interest, which Mermaids had a duty of care to uphold.

While there Dr Webberley handed out hormones to anyone who paid for them, to kids.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 06/10/2018 18:21

That was Gires

NopeNi · 06/10/2018 18:21

Spiritual's sounded frustrated again rather than smug. Good.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 06/10/2018 18:21

Sorry. Busy thread.

Gires recommend transition to cure autism

You are really trying to make out Experimenting on 12 year old’s is fine to justify calling people transphobes?

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 06/10/2018 18:30

It seems unlikely that the Finnish would have twice as many ASD as the UK in the gender variant population, but that is not a reason for believing the UK figure is an underestimate. Anecdotally, young people who have been successfully treated, are often described as having no residual ASD. The symptoms have disappeared once the dysphoria has been treated. That is obviously not always the case, but it is something that long term follow up should address.

This bit Super The bit that claim's autism symptoms vanish?
the bit that sounds like snake oil?

YeTalkShiteHen · 06/10/2018 18:32

You don't think it's bad to medically experiment on vulnerable children?

Neither did Mengele.

And all this talk of a cure, I understand some autistic people would want a cure and that’s up to them.

But I’ll be fucked if I’ll accept NT deciding that we need to be wiped out and “cured”

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 06/10/2018 18:33

That bit.
I even hate 'symptoms' instead of ...say... characteristics.
But I know that's a mainstream view I'm sensitive to.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 06/10/2018 18:34

You can't see why Autistic people don't want to be assosiated with this Charity?

REALLY?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 06/10/2018 18:35

Because listening to the autistic women on this thread with issues with mermaids is apparently not enough.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 06/10/2018 18:37

Spirituallove You plead love and acceptance and you are perfectly complicate in THIS?
You see nothing wrong and want children to be sent here?

Are you that evil?
It's the present day Spiegelgrund, and you can't see anything wrong!

ThefusilliJerry · 06/10/2018 18:38

The key point is this: all other voices, women’s, children’s, people with asd - all must be drowned out by trans perspective. Only that voice has any validity.
Otherwise transphobia innit.
All jolly disturbing.

Bespin · 06/10/2018 18:39

no one ever said it was a cure it was a misquote from meeting minutes, also using comparisons to the nazis's never a good look

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 06/10/2018 18:42

You accuse us of Transphobia, when you are happy to let this happen?
Do you not see how you are ablist, how people don't want Mermaids to have any connection with an Autism charity?

I kept my mouth shut for a long time on this thread but telling us We must have ulteria mostives, because this isn't sick enough for your liking?

HOW DARE YOU!

YeTalkShiteHen · 06/10/2018 18:42

What else would you compare medical experimentation on vulnerable children to?

It is being touted as a cure. A cure nobody asked for.

ThefusilliJerry · 06/10/2018 18:42

Not when the behaviour is comparable. Which this is.

MyCatIsBonkers · 06/10/2018 18:43
Shock

So if I put my little boy in a princess frock he won't need to wear ear defenders anymore? Excellent.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 06/10/2018 18:43

also using comparisons to the nazis's never a good look

That's what it is, perhaps you can tell me an upstanding group who experimented on vulnerable children i can use for future comparison?

YeTalkShiteHen · 06/10/2018 18:45

So if I put my little boy in a princess frock he won't need to wear ear defenders anymore? Excellent.

Ds2 regularly dresses up as tinkerbell and still uses his. Apparently it’s only full transition and medical intervention that “cures” us. There aren’t enough eyerolls in the world.

ThefusilliJerry · 06/10/2018 18:45

It’s quite interesting to see here whose perspective counts.
The trans community gets to define transphobia (and does so illogically, inconsistently and nonsensically, on the whole).
So one would expect people with autism to be allowed to define what prejudice and attacks against them look like. But no. Others get to do that for them.
Well fuck that

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 06/10/2018 18:46

Dr Asperger sent children to Spiegelgrund, maybe you don't know the history and why this is apt?

YeTalkShiteHen · 06/10/2018 18:46

Isn’t that the point? That the transactivists won’t be happy until they get to speak for everyone?

They’ve already appropriated definitions for women, lesbians, homophobia, disability. Why stop there?

Funny how it’s not men being targeted though eh.
