Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Which companies/organisations do you boycott for their misogyny since becoming GC?

Grazia magazine. Read it since launch. Have not bought it since they gave Paris Lees a platform saying Paris is a woman because Paris says so.

The Guardian, obviously.

Thinkx period pants and Lunapads for refusing to acknowledge women menstruate.

Ocado, for thinking the word woman is hate speech.

Didn't buy from most of these companies anyway, but now that Body Shop have been sold off from under the Nestle group, they'll be getting my Christmas present buying money instead of Lush. M&S I can switch away from for the kids' uniforms to a local supplier (even though the owner narks me off for being a boring braggart). I will miss their cafe in town, though, as it's much quieter than the others. Birds Eye can have my money, Tesco won't miss it.

Purchasing power really is astonishing once you get going.

Estellesylvia · 29/09/2018 14:55

Wait what did M&S do?

Sad to add cancer research to the list as its such an important cause. But they prioritised feelings over giving life-saving information by referring to women as "people with cervixes" in a smear test campaign. This at a time when attendance has dropped drastically!

Unacceptable because a) not all women have gender identities, but even those who do, know they are also women (biological term) whatever their gender identity is. And b) not every woman in this country, for educational, language or other reasons, knows they have a cervix. And c) could have easily been inclusive without erasing the biological fact of being a woman and risking women's health by saying "women, non binary women, trans men and other identities" or something.

grasspigeons · 29/09/2018 15:17

The Guardian and The Green Party and Girl Guides

whiteroseredrose · 29/09/2018 15:17

Forgive me but Marmite and Birds Eye? Can someone explain?

On a separate note I boycott Tyrrells crisps because they allow fox hunting across their land.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 29/09/2018 15:25

Lush
H&M
Topshop
ALL political parties
Was thinking of getting a Christmas Ocado delivery but that's not going to happen

I do still go to M&S but not as much as I used to, and I now buy loads of Birds Eye waffles and frozen veg (veggie family, otherwise we'd get the fish fingers too).

glenthebattleostrich · 29/09/2018 15:29

It's getting to the stage where I am considering a small holding and learning to make my own clothes!

I boycott:

Ocado
M&S
Primark
Guardian (although I did before because of their mysogynist stance on the NYE attacks in Germany)
Labour party
Girl guides
Lush
Topshop

I do buy more birds eye and will now head to tk maxx!

zen1 · 29/09/2018 15:41

Topshop
The Guardian

But have upped my quota of Birds Eye fishfingers and have started joining the DC in their fishfingers, chips and peas (also Birds Eye).

Just delurking - hi everyone! - to say that it was a Mercure Hotel in Cardiff which cancelled a WPUK meeting. They're part of the AccorHotels group which includes novotel and ibis.

They originally tweeted that it was because the hotel 'does not tolerate any form of racist, sexist or bigoted behaviour.' They later panicked, said the tweet was 'unauthorised' and that the cancellation was on 'safety' grounds. Oh dear.

They're now off the list for our corporate travel, meetings and our Christmas 'do'. We're only a small firm but our people do a lot of travel.

HermioneWeasley · 29/09/2018 15:44

M&S
Primark
Top shop
Ocado
Grazia magazine

Cancelled DDs to amnesty and NSPCC

Will never vote Labour or Green based on their appalling misogyny through these debates

AliceIdentifiesasaCamel · 29/09/2018 15:45

Guardian
Green & Labour parties
Local h&m (unisex changing rooms, shame, because their clothes for my Dds)
Ocado
Lush
Marmite (jolly annoying, need a substitute)
Cancer research
Thinx (ongoing fb argument about that)

Supporting Birds Eye. Potato. Love it!

HermioneWeasley · 29/09/2018 15:45

Mercure hotels are universally shit so I can’t boycott them because I never use them!

Charliethefeminist · 29/09/2018 15:46

We should support
Birds eye
Jury Inn
Who else

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 29/09/2018 15:49

Nice one @magicmole 👍👏👏

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 29/09/2018 15:57

Lush is the main one for me, wasn't using Ocado anyway as they don't deliver here. I still need to get around to actually writing to them to tell them I am boycotting and why though! Oh and I quit Amnesty (reluctantly, because I still think they do great work on many other things, but the combination of their transactivist stance and prostitution policies was too much to keep supporting them).

What's the issue with Oxfam, did I miss that? Or was that because of the aid workers overseas stuff rather than GC reasons?

Still debating with myself as well whether to leave the Lib Dems or try to change things from within.

SlightAggrandising · 29/09/2018 18:52

Tesco yeast extract is tastier than marmite & half the price

Littlemouseroar · 29/09/2018 19:34

Asda, for their mixed sex changing rooms. Dd is just beginning to realise her body is private, yet we had to walk past a boy to get in and the changing doors have a gap at the bottom.

Pepvixen · 29/09/2018 20:12

Where was that about Mermaids and the FCA? It looks as though their charities are Richard House and the Alzheimer’s Society?

Charliethefeminist · 29/09/2018 20:56

Pep: I thought it was that mermaids or gendered intelligence went in to run diversity workshops

BesmirchingMotherhood · 29/09/2018 21:02

Boycotting Leeds too now. All of it.

Needmoresleep · 29/09/2018 21:09

Pepvixen,

T'was in Mermaids annual trustees report to the Charity Commission. Because of reporting lags, it was probably 2017.

Would cut and paste but on phone.

Needmoresleep · 29/09/2018 21:12

There seemed to be a lot of City money flowing into quite niche organisations, and a thread which touched on it, so I looked Mermaids' funding up.

SittingAround1 · 29/09/2018 21:41

With the average person having 400 periods in their life

With regards to Divacup I hope they adjusted their average period calculatons in accordance with their change of language.
Average person means everyone including men, who we all know dont have any periods at all ever.

Voice0fReason · 29/09/2018 22:11

NSPCC are off my list.
Thinx was something I was very interested in until I read their website.

PerverseConverse · 29/09/2018 22:20

What have M&S done?
