I have only just come back to Mumsnet, wasn't ever really that active but left due to some really unpleasant comments about women on here not being moderated. When I complained, the explanation was they wanted to leave it to show the abuse Mumsnetters get from the MRA's and TRA's. Which I think is odd. As I see it, this is supposed to be a space for parents, mostly Mums (hence the name) and its popularity is primarily due to it being a space for women to discuss what we want and need to. I was a little surprised at the rules regarding how we are supposed to speak about trans issues, because I have a big issue with words being forced on me in an unnatural way- language should evolve naturally. I also have a problem with the idea women should behave and speak in a certain way when we want to talk about issues that make us angry- we are all allowed to be passionate about important things. Imagine a forum for people of colour insisting they alter language to not upset their oppressors? Are we even allowed to acknowledge that some of the people attacking us/complaining are in fact part of the oppressor class anymore? I fully appreciate that everyone at MNHQ has a tough job, I was a facebook admin on a a large group and it was a nightmare. I got abused in ways I am certain no Mumsnet moderator would ever get spoken to ( at least by us women ) and my role was voluntary. BUT... as exhausting, frustrating and difficult as it might be, it is your job which exists because of us and should not involve your personal opinions dictating what women here can and cannot say. Of course you do not want this to become a hateful place... but from an outsiders perspective, I find it very hard to understand the choices MNHQ have made with regards to this issue. I have no idea why Posie was removed, but lets all challenge ourselves a little to think about what emotional demands we make of others with regards to communication. This is a big wide world with lots of different personalities and ways of speaking. Some of us are blunt, forthright and less emotionally demanding of others. Maybe what someone reads as 'nasty' is just really to-the-point and factual. By giving in to the complaints, Mumsnet has effectively agreed that stating biological facts and using widely accepted terms, is hate. That is wrong.

snowbear66 · 27/09/2018 12:48

Bring her back!

hazeyjane · 27/09/2018 12:56

Agreed

Bring back Posie
Bring back MaryZ

Let discussion be discussion.

NobodyToVoteForNow · 27/09/2018 12:57

Agreed.

R0wantrees · 27/09/2018 12:59

I didn't see the thread in question but it has seemed that a particular TRA joined the thread specifically to target Posie Parker. There has been discussion about this on Twitter.

I think it is really important for MN to be aware of the extent and nature of targetting Posie Parker. It is deliberate, viscous and malicious.

Figural · 27/09/2018 13:16

Agree with OP.

I look forward to wearing my definition of woman tee shirt when it arrives. Grin.

If it fits my awkward shape tolerably I'll order another one.

feellikeanalien · 27/09/2018 13:25

Lurk on this board a lot now but have never posted on here before. I can't believe that Posie has been banned.

Free speech is truly dying on its feet.

As far as mods are concerned surely when they take up the position they must realise that people are going to react strongly to such an emotive issue.

If you can't stand the heat!!!!

BadderWolf · 27/09/2018 13:28

I'd also be grateful if she could be allowed back.

Winniefred · 27/09/2018 13:31

I agee, if Women can't speak without having their words moderated to appease, then Mumsnet is nothing more that a talking shop for a stereotype of a 1950's oppressed Mother. Not all Women agree with each other on everything, but we should be allowed to call out those that would demand our identity, rights, political platforms, job roles, without ever having lived the material reality of life as a female. I withdrew from Mumsnet because of its silencing of Women to appease males and when you do that you are complicit in silencing Women.

arranfan · 27/09/2018 13:40

From Martin Luther King Jr (posted upthread) to Andrea Dworkin - we need a plurality of voices:.

Feminism is a political practice of fighting male supremacy in behalf of women as a class, including all the women you don't like, including all the women you don't want to be around, including all the women who used to be your best friends whom you don't want anything to do with anymore. It doesn't matter who the individual women are.

PierreBezukov · 27/09/2018 13:41

Bring her back.

InfiniteSheldon · 27/09/2018 13:41

The earlier poster who saud Posie is the modern day suffragette has nailed it. Posie has been silenced for standing up for us.

Lemonyfuckit · 27/09/2018 14:00

Delurking to say I 100% agree. It's refreshing that on the whole, Mumsnet does not give in to this appeasement and falsifying of language and biological fact the way many other places (on the internet and IRL) do. Mumsnet, please don't become complicit in the silencing of women. It's not just the way that facts and truth are being distorted by this isssue that so horrifies, but the way that even debating it is being shut down. As women we are being told we're hateful for stating fact, to silence us. That is exhausting and terrifying. Please don't give in to that Mumsnet for the sake of convenience.

peepholepringle · 27/09/2018 14:03

I understand why MNHQ feel that they need to do this but it is disappointing to say the least.

Women are going to win this fight, we won't be erased. And won't it be a shame that Mumsnet, a site predominately used by women, won't be able to say that they were a part of that.

arranfan · 27/09/2018 14:28

Dr Jane Clare Jones has been fighting this for a long time and she's sounding the alarm about the silencing of women in the real life political arena and online (see the proposed changes to Twitter policy that would ban so many gender critical Twitter users).

For those of you out there still sitting on the fence, or who still believe that I, and everyone opposing this ‘civil rights movement’, is just a nasty evil hate-mongering bigot, please, if you give one shit about women and the protection of women, wake-the-fuck-up. This is actually happening, it’s scary as shit, and we may well be running out of time. This is what woman-hating totalitarianism looks like. This is not a fucking drill.

. 'And won't it be a shame that Mumsnet, a site predominately used by women, won't be able to say that they were a part of that.'

No, sorry, that's nonsense.
I would love it if Mumsnet would reinstate Posie and relax the rules on how we can discuss this, but the fact remains that Mumsnet has been a huge part of the development of this conversation, and continues to be, even though Maryz and Posie and others aren't here any more.
They have put a huge amount of effort into ensuring we can keep talking and they still keep looking mainstream enough to not get closed down or have their advertising pulled.
We don't always agree with specific decisions but they are here behind us.

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 27/09/2018 15:24

There's no such thing as Cis women eagle it's just women.
I support truth and people not being forced to lie.
Bring back ALL THE banned FWR posters, however "exhausting"Hmm

frogintheTyne · 27/09/2018 15:33

"exhausting" is the snowflake word of the moment. People are terribly "exhausted" by "exhausting" things and "disappointed" by "disappointing" things. It must be exhausting being so disappointed all the time.

Mumsnet - grow a backbone and stand for Your Women

Actual women, you know, the ones with a vagina, don't need a prefix.

PennyCrayonsCrayon · 27/09/2018 15:49

Agree!

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 27/09/2018 15:52

We don't use the word 'cis' here, Eagle. Check out the link at the top of the section. Woman and transwoman work just fine.

Movablefeast · 27/09/2018 15:52

It is offensive that over 50% of the population i.e. the majority and who are a district biological class: WOMEN are expected to "define" ourselves against a group of men who are less than 1% of the population!!!!!!

How misogynistic can you get!!!
