Using Suffrage Colours symbol for our activism

Inspired by Linda Bellos hanky and it being referred to as causing offence by a court adversary I popped into Museum of London on my way to a meeting to purchase some pins and a suffrage bag.
Their 'votes for women' pins were disappointing as they look more navy than purple.

Wearing a suffrage pin strikes me as a perfect way of signalling the fight is not over and 100 years from getting the vote it is not sufficiently political that employers and colleagues can complain (although I thought that about my women definition bag). It is a way of starting the conversation with anyone commenting on it.

So does anyone know where I can buy a suffrage colours scarf & pin?

This is the wool I got at the weekend for some socks. I had a really nice conversation about the Suffragettes with the women who sold it to me.
Helps to preserve a rare sheep breed too, so win win.

A) I bloody love knitting so there we are

B) women in 'the middle east' have a variety of legal structures to negotiate depending on eg whether they live in Israel or Qatar, Saudi or Iraq.
I have many friends from various states including the above who do not think they had less rights there than here, including qualified doctors, accountants etc.

C) women in 'the middle east' do plenty of activism and we would be better signal boosting their campaigns than using them as a gotcha in a 'why do x when y is more important' strop

D) I actually learnt Arabic so I could raise awareness in refugee communities of UK laws and customs relating to vawg and women's rights. I've worked with women in various middle eastern countries either by Skype or by women coming here for study and bringing back the awareness they got from working with my organization to make change at home.
You know what's a subversive and attractive way to frame empowering work for women whether from the middle east or otherwise?
Crafts.

So...
Lol

Aaw countess that's gorgeous.
I like the green in particular. Mine is 'tartan green' which is a bit too modern but frankly I couldn't wait to get started.

FullFatCoke · 04/10/2018 18:31

Interestingly, crafting was a significant part of the women's suffrage movement. Consider it part of their "PR" campaign. Rosettes, jewelry, clothing, hats, scarves...handmade by women to share their beliefs and signal to others where they stood. And most suffragettes did not get imprisoned, but that doesn't mean their efforts are insignificant to those that did make, perhaps, a greater sacrifice.

Please don't make assumptions about what the rest of us are or are not doing for women's rights. I volunteer at and donate a significant amount of money to a shelter for battered women and their children who have no place to go. I write letters to my elected officials about my concerns. I send donations to candidates and organizations that support my causes. I attend protests when possible. I regularly support a charity that provides midwifery care to women in Africa who may have no birth attendants. I donate free breastfeeding medicine/lactation consultation time to a local organization for mothers.

In other words, I'm doing what I can for women, in the best ways that I know how. No, I'm not in jail...yet. (Here in the US, we're not quite to the point of "hate speech" laws as you are in the UK.) Don't belittle my efforts just because I want to buy a damn antique pin on Etsy. (Wish I could knit or crochet!)

Lovely knitting!

Watching BBC iPlayer, catching up on the prime time TV, noticed two properly marvellous, famously intelligent and talented women wearing jewellery in the colours.

Might be nothing, a coincidence, the jewellery might have been chosen for them, but I'm hopeful.

Charliethefeminist · 07/10/2018 21:04

That poster is living up to their name. Any sincere woman would likely have said "like our suffragette ancestors proudly did"
