Using Suffrage Colours symbol for our activism

Inspired by Linda Bellos hanky and it being referred to as causing offence by a court adversary I popped into Museum of London on my way to a meeting to purchase some pins and a suffrage bag.
Their 'votes for women' pins were disappointing as they look more navy than purple.

Wearing a suffrage pin strikes me as a perfect way of signalling the fight is not over and 100 years from getting the vote it is not sufficiently political that employers and colleagues can complain (although I thought that about my women definition bag). It is a way of starting the conversation with anyone commenting on it.

So does anyone know where I can buy a suffrage colours scarf & pin?

I'm very techy and don't completely understand Twitter Blush but follow links to it from here - great to see the colours catching on so quickly over there.

concretesieve · 27/09/2018 12:44

Meh - UNtechy

Teatowels, mugs and cards here:

www.radicalteatowel.co.uk/search.php?search_query=suffragette&page=1&section=product

Would be good if Standing for Women & FPFW could produce more merchandise, then it would raise funds for the cause, rather than lining other companies' pockets.

I'm looking for a university-type striped scarf for winter in suffragette colours but can't seem to find anything - does anyone know if such a thing exists?

Love this idea OP!

The genderqueer flag was apparently accidental by an American who didn't know about the British suffragette colours - I'm inclined to believe that, rather than any sinister 'appropriation' but it would have been more gracious of her to revisit her ideas to avoid confusion.

Purity of purpose? Or, if you're name's Catherine, that means pure apparently.

That's a mistranslation of the Greek, it actually means trouble.

I hope you have a small neck as it only goes up to 12 sorry!

I've ordered some wool for a scarf. I need to do a bit more crafting and a bit less time on social media as this is keeping me awake at night Sad

Gulag could be a plan! Actually there's a statue in my town I've always wanted to put a scarf on. Maybe he needs some cheerful green, white & purple for winter...

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 27/09/2018 16:19

The Radical Tea Towel Company - which does things other than tea towels, despite the name - has a selection of Suffragette merchandise, including a scarf.

I went old skool and made a woven wrist thingy!

But the gender queer flag thing is very annoying - not the message I was intending! Will have to combine with a woman symbol I think

I might try to make a badge

MargotA · 27/09/2018 17:48

Luckily both sizes fit adults (I got one for myself from The Great British Baby Company!) xx

MargotA · 27/09/2018 17:52

Both small & medium sizes fit adults (I bought the smaller one for myself for the centenary of the 1918 Representation of the People Act)

(Sorry meant to add link to previous post!)

Thank you so much for all these great ideas. I am really looking forward to seeing some of you great women somewhere soon!!

It so exciting to think that we will be able to spot each other and wave or have a chat :)

VickyEadie · 27/09/2018 18:20

Just ordered me some badges, too.

I live near a bridge with iron railings. Today when I cross it I will give the kids some feed for the ducks and whilst they are occupied I will tie violet, white and green ribbons across the entire bridge. I will attach a plastic wallet at either end containing leafletsre the consultation.

MipMipMip · 30/09/2018 19:42

Wow OVA respect to you!

GeorgeFayne · 01/10/2018 07:13

Inspired across the pond here...ordered a lovely antique brooch from Etsy, (reasonably priced, too!). Have my eye on a beautiful American 19th amendment one on eBay...

I think white still has strong symbolism. Not so much for sexual purity, but for truth. A light shining in the dark madness that is our times. The TRUTH is a man can never be a woman. Woman is not a feeling or a costume. This simplicity of biologic reality is, in my mind, what much of this is all about.

Ifonlyus · 01/10/2018 08:08

Ova - great action.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 01/10/2018 08:15

I love when crafting and activism come together!

Wilderspin · 01/10/2018 08:23

Those of you looking for college-style scarves could also create one here: www.ryderamies.co.uk/shop/create-your-scarf/ - the green is a bit dark, but if you wanted one with just the three stripes, it's an option!
