I'm sure this has been mentioned but Zoe Williams has done a piece on John McConnell's Mumsnet chat. She mentions the trans issue in passing.

Comments are open. And one says "what is it with Mumsnet and transphobia anyway?"

I'll see if I can link...

What is it with Mumsnet and transphobia, anyway?" discussion.theguardian.com/comment-permalink/120570800

Maybe we should tell them??

There's little point in commenting. If your comment is gender critical it will almost certainly be deleted. Even entirely factual comments of mine were all deleted. My comments are now being pre-modded so I don't comment at all.

They use that quote "Comment is free but facts are sacred." Not if they're the wrong facts they're not.

NaturalBornWoman · 18/09/2018 19:31

OMG I'm watching perfectly civil factual comments being deleted within minutes of being posted!

LambChopsMcGee · 18/09/2018 19:50

Really? Like what?

I see the original one I mentioned was deleted! Seems a bit harsh as well!

Some GC ish comments are on there... I'm just hoping they'll realise they would be talking about this!

speakingwoman · 18/09/2018 19:58

There is lots of debate on there, mostly very civil and it isn’t being deleted.

Latinista · 18/09/2018 20:18

I have discovered that it is very easy to get “feminist-critical” comments deleted in turn.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 18/09/2018 20:23

I see a lot of patronising comments from dudes who look down on mums and Mumsnet while not understanding how the site or a webchat works.

corlan · 18/09/2018 20:28

Just got my comments deleted. No idea what for. I was very civil and stated facts. Ho-hum.

LambChopsMcGee · 18/09/2018 20:29

Yeah I saw one person decide to guess why MN is "transphobic" and decided it must be cos we idealise motherhood and the essential quality of Mother and Woman and therefore are shirty about non conforming.

Twat.

I do wish a Guardian writer would pick up on this. Even on the MN angle just, even though I know it would bring a storm of shit our way. I was very pleased to see Hadley Freeman write a GC column a while back. I bet Deborah Orr would have had something to say but of course they fired her...

I have learnt so much about this issue from Mumsnet though and I think a few more people clicking over to see what the fuss is about is a good thing.

Not much of an opportunity. I just signed up and wrote a reply on a thread with about 15 replies. By the time I went to post the original comment had been moderated and removed.

This is the comment that they removed for not abiding by 'community standards'.

"I think a lot of women are waking up to the fact that the rights of men who identify as women are being advanced at the expense of womens rights. The proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act will mean that any man can self-identify as a woman and gain access to services that are reserved for women."

corlan · 18/09/2018 20:34

That was my comment oldcrone
What rule it broke is beyond me.

Procrastinator1 · 18/09/2018 20:34

Deleted too.

ShackUp · 18/09/2018 20:36

Just been on and am being VERY CAREFUL about what I say. So much kool aid sloshing around...

GorgonLondon · 18/09/2018 20:38

I commented on.that guardian thread (in relation to antisemitism, not transgender) and it was deleted, for absolutely no reason I can see.

Guardian mods are extremely censorship-happy.

happydappy2 · 18/09/2018 20:48

I commented that in women’s sport trans identified males are winning medals whilst competing against women-zapped. Fascinating that the guardian don’t want/aren’t allowed to publish the truth!

DonnaBe · 18/09/2018 20:53

Looks like thecGuardian spotted what you’re up to and deleted all your hate comments.
Some of mine get deleted as well, so don’t take it personally.

DrizzledWombat · 18/09/2018 20:54

I posted something along these lines:

"If transwomen are women, what is the definition of "woman" that fits the bill? If one can assert that X people are Y, presumably one can first define X and Y or the whole thing becomes nonsensical."

Nuked within about half a nanosecond. I think the Grauniad (or at least the duty moderator) has swallowed the narrative that politely questioning the assertion that TWAW, even politely asking for clarification, is in itself transphobic and mod-worthy. Oh well, on the bright side that's a monthly subscription that I'm not going to have to pay any more.

Blackberrypiesforbreakfast · 18/09/2018 20:54

The Guardian is a woman hating rag.

speakingwoman · 18/09/2018 20:55

Oh well, it was nice reading the civilised debate while it lasted..

happydappy2 · 18/09/2018 20:56

That article now closed for comments. So much for free speech hey!

ShackUp · 18/09/2018 20:56

That thread now has more holes than a fishing net.

No-one's prepared to listen to us.

happydappy2 · 18/09/2018 20:58

I think people ARE listening, which is making other people very uncomfortable

corlan · 18/09/2018 20:58

Yes - it is nice to have a debate. I really mean that. It's nice to hear different opinions. Unfortunately, the debate didn't stay civilised very long!

hackmum · 18/09/2018 20:59

Yup, I’ve often had gender-critical comments deleted, even though I’m always extremely polite and rational- just like the comments quoted above. It’s really depressing because the Guardian is such a prominent platform for debate.
