I want a badge!

PerverseConverse · 15/09/2018 14:44

I'll be going alone too.

A friend said to me the other day that they feel this is the modern equivalent of the suffragette movement. I feel like we've gone backwards after all those women fought for our rights.

I've bought a ticket. Do you think there'll be trouble outside? I remember seeing reports of protests outside similar events.

GinNeeded · 15/09/2018 17:05

I'd like to come, I'd be on my own though. Is it in central Manchester? I would be driving from Liverpool if anyone wants a lift.

silentcrow · 15/09/2018 17:06

A friend said to me the other day that they feel this is the modern equivalent of the suffragette movement.
I read Vox recently and the main character has a friend, Jackie, who is a campaigner - always going to rallies, shouting about women's rights, putting up posters etc, before the US collapses and women are silenced. And the thing that haunts her constantly through the book is that she wishes she'd been more like Jackie. She knows she should have spoken out. Whatever I thought of the rest of the book, that's the bit that haunts me too. I may still be afraid to risk my job, but there's a lot I can do in the background.

AllTheShapes hard to say. For myself I'm not worried - I probably blocked more punches in the dojo this morning than that lot have thrown in their lives - but I am a bit concerned about the media angle.

PerverseConverse · 15/09/2018 17:16

I'll be travelling in by train. Maybe those of us going alone could meet up before and thereby go together so there's safety in numbers.

AllTheShapes · 15/09/2018 17:34

I'm hoping that the releasing venue info late will reduce the number of people objecting...

BingBongSong · 15/09/2018 17:43

GinNeeded are you going to the WPUK event in Liverpool earlier in ther week? I'm going to that one and wondering how many people will be attending.

GinNeeded · 16/09/2018 09:22

@BingBongSong I didnt know there was one so I have just added my self to the wait list.

I have only just started to explore the feminism threads in the last couple of months and it's exploded a passion for justice in me I had forgotten that I possessed!

I really want to meet with like minded people and learn more.

I can see people irl switching off their brains and eyes glazing over when I raise the need to be gender critical and how it reduces the fight for equality and the right to be who you are to a series of stereotypes which puts you into a box.

BingBongSong · 16/09/2018 09:47

GinNeeded I think WPUK will release more tickets nearer to the date, so hope you get one! I'm very minded to go to the talk on Friday too, although need to check childcare arrangements first.

PeriwinkleBlues · 16/09/2018 10:22

@BingBongSong @GinNeeded

I've registered for the Liverpool event. Going on my own and a bit worried it might get heated as I know how Liverpool like a good demonstration! Was considering Leeds but Manchester might be better option...

I hope I can get a ticket for Liverpool. If I do I would be happy to meet up with anyone that wasn't comfortable walking in on their own.

BingBongSong · 16/09/2018 14:06

Yes, let me know if you're able to get a ticket for Liverpool. I'll be driving in and would love to walk in with someone else!

TrumpsTinyCheesyWotsit · 16/09/2018 14:12

I would be able to make the liverpool one, does anybody have a link? I can always jump the train. Has the venue been released for that one yet as I am disabled so would need to work out closest stations etc.

Aubasaurus · 16/09/2018 14:23

Aw, I was just psyching myself up to buy a ticket and then I realised it's one of the few evenings in my life I have something on. Gutted! Maybe the next one.

BingBongSong · 16/09/2018 14:24

Hi there,
Here you go:

A Woman's Place is a Safe Port

The advance tickets have sold out but you can register and I think they are releasing more tickets nearer to the time.

I've never been to these events before so not sure how to organise a meeting point beforehand... through messaging here?!

Sorry about hijacking the Manchester thread - I'll revive the Liverpool thread.

TrumpsTinyCheesyWotsit · 16/09/2018 15:01

I am between the two places so seeing which one makes the most sense for me to attend. I have also become a member of standing for women and ordered a tshirt and some stickers.

CoolCarrie · 16/09/2018 15:06

Please could someone give those of us unable to attend the details of how to view the live streaming? Thanks

silentcrow · 16/09/2018 15:35

I don't think they've released details yet but I'll try and remember to post it.

I must say, it's really heartening to see so many posters talking about these meetings - not just that you're coming, but knowing there are women in the region who understand what's going on really helps. These things can feel so isolating when most of the action happens in London and it's hard to figure out if you're being tin foil hatted in a little internet bubble. The need for secrecy and hiding your identity is so weird - I could quite easily be talking to people here, on r/gendercritical, on Gender Hammer and via MFN and you might all be the same people, or there could be dozens of individuals. Even funnier, I'm willing to bet I know at least one or two of you in real life. The subterfuge is crazy.

Miketv · 16/09/2018 15:59

It is mad. And also worrying that some of us have to be really careful so we don't jeopardise our jobs Angry

drradfem · 17/09/2018 09:25

Three meetings and one demo in a week just before the end of the consultation. 15,000 individuals completed the Scottish consultation, let's see if we can make that 150,000 in England and Wales!
