Has Dh out-feministed me, what do you think?

Just reading this article and this woman thinks the flight attendant was wrong to call her 'Miss". I think the flight attendant was trying to get 200 people on an airline and probably did quite well to get 'Yes, Miss O'dwyer' out before pointing her in the general direction of her seat.

unless I am mistaken and someone literally changed her boarding card to read Miss instead of Dr I don't think this is the crime of the century. in a conversation, I could totally understand her annoyance with someone getting it wrong but this is just someone misspeaking while under pressure? I also think her original tweet calling the woman a "trolly dolley" way more offensive to women and working class people and this whole thing reads less like feminism and more like "don't you know who I am!".

Dh says if you go to school for 8 years it's the least you can expect and this is the same as me getting offended when people instist on calling me miss after I have corrected them to Ms.* So who's right?

*For the record, I'd have no issue whatsoever if someone called me Miss in the rush instead of Ms in this situation which is again why it feels less about feminism than about academic credentials.

Boarding passes do often include a title, I've travelled as Mr Obviously Female First Name Surname a few times Smile

Thelastempressofconstantinople · 09/09/2018 11:19

I am really proud to be Miss. It shows every time I use it that I’m not attached to anyone, but living single and wild and free (or as wild and free as you can be with kids pets ft job etc). So I would not have objected.

EggplantInTheVestibule · 09/09/2018 11:20

LassWiADelicateAir

On another note in the olden days before social media O'Dwyer could just have said to the flight attendant "it's Dr actually " and got an apology there and then.

I would still take this approach. I wonder why Dr O'Dwyer didn't

DH has a PhD. He never use Dr outside of work, says it tells you a lot about people who do, and particularly those that make a huge fuss about someone (particularly, say, someone under pressure doing a low wage job) who gets it wrong. They're snobs, basically. And yes, the abuse on twitter isn't ok, but neither is shaming a low paid female employee on social media. I'm sure if she'd commented at the time, she'd have got an apology. Really petty and mean to go on twitter after the fact.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/09/2018 11:35

So because your DH doesn't use it it means those of us who do are snobs?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 09/09/2018 11:40

It's all about hierarchy again.
Medical docs often (or used to) think non medical docs who used it outside of work were twats.

Hierarchy hierarchy hierarchy.

TBF my friend's dad who parked in the doctors only parking was a twat. Well more than that, he was a horrible horrible bastard of a man. But anyway.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 09/09/2018 11:41

Loads of poeple are snobs.

Get rid of the titles and even out the hierarchy.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/09/2018 11:41

I believe that the first and original useage of the title 'Dr' was ecclesiastical - as in 'Doctor of the Church'. At least that is always what I say at dinner parties when someone tries to square off the PhDs and the medical Drs.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/09/2018 11:43

Get rid of the titles and even out the hierarchy

Let's include all titles then, including Mrs etc.

Mine is still relevant in professional circles - and I actually worked for it :)

NothingOnTellyAgain · 09/09/2018 11:44

Well yes obv

Get rid of all of them

It would solve the mr/ms/mrs stuff for a start
The ones that indicate that we are the sex class

So yes i want them all gone.

Like i said upthread >> I know a lot of people are very attached to them though.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 09/09/2018 11:44

You don't think medical docs work for their qualifications? Confused

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/09/2018 11:48

You don't think medical docs work for their qualifications? confused

Er, no I never said that. I simply said that I worked for mine!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/09/2018 11:50

So yes i want them all gone

So that will include priests, rabbis, other religious peoples, military peoples, the aristocracy, the lot then.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 09/09/2018 11:51

"Mine is still relevant in professional circles - and I actually worked for it "

Misunderstood this - what did you mean?

Yes I want them all gone. They are nothing but a signal of position in various hierarchies, in the UK expecially.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 09/09/2018 11:53

Why would I give pause at the idea of religious people losing their titles?

While we're at it we can take the bishops is it? out of the house of lords. Why should religion get automatically into our lawmaking systems.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/09/2018 11:54

Misunderstood this - what did you mean

Simply - I worked for my PhD (just as medical Drs work for those and other professionals do too) in a way that someone does not work for 'Miss' and it is still relevant in my workplace to denote that I have jumped a particular hurdle that others haven't mind you, having a dick counts for more but let's not go there.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/09/2018 12:00

There's no real problem with getting rid of titles, we can use letters after our names (where they're appropriate) for earned qualifications etc and honours eg knighthoods could also be just KBE not 'Sir', in line with MBE.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 09/09/2018 12:03

Oh so it was aimed at the PP who was proud to be "Miss"?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 09/09/2018 12:05

Errol I'd not go down that route either as it's even more complicated - some people have a string of letters after their name and so even more opportunity to get shirty if someone gets it wrong!

I'd go for eg

Bob Smith

And

When relevant or intrducing at a talk or wahetevr

This is Bob Smith who is the Grand Badger of the Leamington Spa Freemasons or whatever

Orchiddingme · 09/09/2018 12:09

It is a common phenomenon that when both men and women have Dr titles, mens are used more frequently, there's even been research that shows this. I've been at talks where we've been introduced as Dr Gage (man), Professor Mattin and Orchid. In those contexts I introduce myself as Dr Chiddingme to obtain parity with the men who are default referred to as Drs.

I would be happy for everyone to drop titles in everyday life- no need for bank or airline tickets to have titles on them.

I wouldn't drop my Dr in professional life unless all the men do and they won't!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/09/2018 12:09

Oh so it was aimed at the PP who was proud to be "Miss"

No, that was just a random example. I hadn't even read that post just before I start WW3

Oh yeah. Been there and sung that song. I've even been in situations where men without PhDs have been 'promoted' and I've been 'Spartacus'.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 09/09/2018 12:12

OrchiddingMe - yes there was a study abotu that - I'll see if I can find it.

At seminars and similar - the men were introdcued with full title and name, the women were introdcued by name.

I'll have a google.

Also agree with the poster upthread who raised the issue of in USA women doctors and esp black women docs being turned away when they responded to "is there a doctor on the plane"

NothingOnTellyAgain · 09/09/2018 12:17

planes
