Children raped and trafficked in plain sight on the streets of Glasgow

www.heraldscotland.com/news/12766853.The_Child_Sex_Scandal_On_The_Streets_Of_Scotland/

This has been going on for years. Every now and then there is another article written or another news report, like there was on Scottish news last night.

The police know about it
The social workers know about it
The Children's panel know about it
The press know about it
The politicians know about it
The people of Glasgow know about it
The people of Govanhill see it evry day and many continue to report it, but yet nothing happens.
This is Nicola Sturgeon's constituency

It's Rotherham all over again, except here these children are often being sold by their own parents. Parents who do not care if their daughters skip school, because they are girls. Girls are referred to the Children's panel, but the parents don't attend, because they don't care. They see no point in sending girls to school, educating girls. Girls are only good for one thing. And they are sold in the streets of Glasgow.

It's a scandal that this is happening in plain sight.

This is the Government who are proposing NAMED PERSON legislation, where every child in Scotland will have a named person who can intervene and overrule a parent's authority. This authoritarian proposal is being pushed as 'progressive'. Yet the authorities will not take actions against parents who are clearly neglecting, abusing and prostituting their children NOW. The government has that power now and they are choosing not to take action.

The Scottish Government is a disgrace. They come up with all manner of 'progressive' proposals yet they allow the rape of children on the streets of Glasgow.

All this stuff is horrifying and sickening, and I can’t see how anyone with an ounce, even a microgram of decency could let it slip by. I’m a cynical cow, but personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were members of the police force and other agencies, probably quite high up, who are up to their bollocks in this, so it would be in their interests to waive it away with accusations of racism.
And Gronky, just no. I sincerely hope you don’t have children.

NameChangedAgain18 · 02/09/2018 10:33

That is certainly the rumour wrt the failure to deal with Asian grooming gangs in Yorkshire.

AngryAttackKittens · 02/09/2018 10:47

I too suspect that the police aren't doing anything because they're profiting from this in one way or another.

And no, selling your children into prostitution (ie. to be raped) is not understandable because you're poor. I wonder if the person who wrote that understands how deeply they're insulting people who live in poverty when they say that. Do you think a low income means people love their children less?

FermatsTheorem · 02/09/2018 11:25

What the fuck is wrong with the Guardian? It's another Rotherham happening in plain sight, and they want to bleat about racism.

Yes, racism against the Roma is a problem (I live in a part of the country where this sort of racism is very prevalent and very poisonous). But being against racism doesn't mean tolerating rape of children - it's not an either/or choice.

workshyfop · 02/09/2018 11:30

the issue is that everything is run by men and men like to have "freedom" to fuck whoever

Nothing will change until we take the patriarchy apart piece by piece and build a society that gives power to women’s voices.

We need to DO something but this is such a huge undertaking I don’t know where to start.

traceyracer · 02/09/2018 11:32

the police say there is no evidence of this happening, but if it's happening on the streets in daylight how can they possibly not find evidence?

thenightsky · 02/09/2018 11:36

Didn't Stacey Dooley once do a documentary about the selling of Roma children?

AngryAttackKittens · 02/09/2018 11:42

The Guardian's moral compass is broken. They need a new one.

Bejazzled · 02/09/2018 11:44

I'm just glad that something is being done at last.
I work with a lovely man who lives in Allison St (Govanhill)
He and his wife have reported their concerns going back years and even visited Sturgeon in one of her very few constituency surgeries.

They were told by someone on the community council that the police response was 'if you can't live with "cultural differences" then move'

He thinks because he is a white Glaswegian that he was pigeon-holed as a racist.

Flashingbeacon · 02/09/2018 12:33

Has anyone from the Roma community come forward? Not necessarily about this but about the “cultural differences”. This all smacks of men telling everyone woman like working part time for less money because it frees them to support the families.
I couldn’t be anymore white and middle class but if I can lend my voice to people that need it I would like to. I’m not far from Glasgow and my DH lived there for many years and fits the stereotype (paunchy, balding football fan with tattoos). He’s equally horrified by these reports though. This isn’t the Scotland I want to live in and if we’re to be proud of being British again what can we do to stamp this shit out?

MSP Nicola Sturgeon and MP Alison Thewliss declined to comment

terryleather · 02/09/2018 18:06

Was Thewliss one of the female MPs at the Fawcett Society meeting where they said a parliament with 50% men and 50% transwomen would be fine and dandy...

RrreCansada · 03/09/2018 01:19

These Roma children do not stand a chance. They have members of their own government/agencies that can walk into home's and take children they deem them 'at risk' they are then shipped off to other countries

ManeNachger · 03/09/2018 01:29

I feel so sick reading this. Sad
Why isn't anyone doing anything?

delphguelph · 03/09/2018 01:45

It isn't really about race though, it's about poverty and the fact that these poor children are so far off the radar.
Rotherham, Govan Hill etc, we're basically back to the slums of Dickens. Pakistani, Roma, Irish, English, etc etc ad nauseum it doesn't matter, bottom line is these children are the most marginalised and poorest in society.

People don't really give a shit. Or should I say, the people who have enough power to make a difference don't give enough of a shit. Because these kids are poor, they're seen as worthless.

delphguelph · 03/09/2018 01:48

I too suspect that the police aren't doing anything because they're profiting from this in one way or another.

Agree. And I think it goes far higher than the Police.

delphguelph · 03/09/2018 01:57

That guardian article is ridiculous.

They used to be respectable!

What is more sinister than child sex abuse? Pray, do tell?

Havabiscuit · 03/09/2018 02:03

God it’s awful. I came across this problem too in London working at a GP practice just off the Edgeware Rd. Roma girl, I thought she was about 14 had 3 children when she registered. She was pregnant but when I asked where her youngest was ( due pre school boosters) she said “ Home with a Mum in Romania”. ? It was all deeply suspicious but it took a bit of time and other patients to twig there was a pattern. I agree with the previous poster. The problem is with the bloody penis. It’s unacceptable and the full weight of the law should bear down on these men, no matter how rich and powerful, what religion or what colour.

dogaregreat · 03/09/2018 02:11

This is the reason I suffer with anxiety every day of my life. The reason I won't let family meme era take my daughter out to the park. The reason I don't like going out on my own with my daughter.

These sick individuals need a real punishment! Our government are far to easy on pedophiles! It's becoming normal! Is fucked up and somethings needs to be done. I feel like crying reading this and it's setting of my anxiety!

LassWiADelicateAir · 03/09/2018 07:59

We talked about this at the end of 2017.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3089249-Child-abuse-prostitution-in-Glasgow-Times-investigation?pg=1&order=

I emailed a copy of The Times article to Sturgeon. I didn't get a reply.

welshmist · 03/09/2018 10:20

Where is the NSPCC and other charities in all this?

LassWiADelicateAir · 03/09/2018 12:47

Or anyone for that matter. The Scottish Government is obsessed with "community buy outs" of land - for which vast sums of money, time and effort have been expended for frankly very limited results and benefits.

Here is a community sinking into the mire (see The Sun article) yet no one or no organisation seems to care.

www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/scottish-news/3025241/govanhill-crime-squalor-investigation/

arranfan · 03/09/2018 12:55

Here is a community sinking into the mire (see The Sun article) yet no one or no organisation seems to care.

It brings to mind Malcolm Gladwell's Million Dollar Murray - New Yorker 2006 (There is a alternate site for pdf for those who can't see full New Yorker )

Huge amounts of money can be spent without ever addressing, never mind solving, a problem that is life-destroying and community-destroying.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 03/09/2018 16:51

Society seems to have a real issue facing up to csa, is the conclusion.

Reading about the number of men in UK who have accessed images of child abuse and then there was something else with the Xthousands of men estimated to present a threat to children IRL was horrifying

It's the issue that it cuts through society, men from all backgrounds, walks of life, levels of wealth, jobs etc etc and this is very very very very uncomfortable to face up to and very challenging to tackle.

Because it's the pimps AND the punters who are the problem here >> and the punters are bogstandard ordinary men that the "authorities" seem to have no interest in going after.

AIBU discussion about the programme mentioned upthread (I think): Married to a paedophile
