Children raped and trafficked in plain sight on the streets of Glasgow

www.heraldscotland.com/news/12766853.The_Child_Sex_Scandal_On_The_Streets_Of_Scotland/

This has been going on for years. Every now and then there is another article written or another news report, like there was on Scottish news last night.

The police know about it
The social workers know about it
The Children's panel know about it
The press know about it
The politicians know about it
The people of Glasgow know about it
The people of Govanhill see it evry day and many continue to report it, but yet nothing happens.
This is Nicola Sturgeon's constituency

It's Rotherham all over again, except here these children are often being sold by their own parents. Parents who do not care if their daughters skip school, because they are girls. Girls are referred to the Children's panel, but the parents don't attend, because they don't care. They see no point in sending girls to school, educating girls. Girls are only good for one thing. And they are sold in the streets of Glasgow.

It's a scandal that this is happening in plain sight.

This is the Government who are proposing NAMED PERSON legislation, where every child in Scotland will have a named person who can intervene and overrule a parent's authority. This authoritarian proposal is being pushed as 'progressive'. Yet the authorities will not take actions against parents who are clearly neglecting, abusing and prostituting their children NOW. The government has that power now and they are choosing not to take action.

The Scottish Government is a disgrace. They come up with all manner of 'progressive' proposals yet they allow the rape of children on the streets of Glasgow.

Same thing goes on with roma kids in London and very little is done.

arranfan · 01/09/2018 13:06

Combination of These children are not valued by society...Easier to turn a blind eye and the children were never going to amount to much anyway attitude

tbh, given the lack of confidence:

in SS interventions (no matter how much money is spent);

that Children's Homes are better for the children and free of abuse (Kirkup wrote about the lamentable state of this recently);

that there is sufficient LA funding to investigate/intervene/pay for Out of Area placements (back in January, 40%+ of local councillors with responsibility for children said that lack of money means they don't have enough to fulfil their statutory duties);

that these children can be fostered on a sustainable basis after their damaging experiences and lack of appropriate support for foster parents.

The Guardian's response to the Times' piece:

Glasgow Herald response (paywall):

NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/09/2018 13:10

Not feeling confident about the guardian piece

Ok going to read

Bowlofbabelfish · 01/09/2018 13:11

We need more attention on the men buying these children. They need arresting and locking up.

The identity of at least one of them would appear to be known from the times article. Which begs the question as to why he has not been arrested and charged.

Agree that the scale of the problem is immense. But ffs, if we don’t have money to save children from trafficking and rape then that’s a poor indictment on us as a society.

welshmist · 01/09/2018 13:11

OK so it the Guardian saying it is not happening?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/09/2018 13:11

Charity supporting Roma in Glasgow:

www.glasgowlive.co.uk/news/glasgow-news/roma-charity-group-blasts-govanhill-13919938

I have to feed small person now, but I'm sure there is more. Concerted effort to say "move along, nothing to see here"

welshmist · 01/09/2018 13:12

The Guardian says and I quote from the article provided

" Certainly, the claims of child sex abuse, no matter how threadbare, need to be investigated. Let’s just hope that these are not merely being used to mask something sinister."

Please tell me what is more sinister than child rape???

SPOFS · 01/09/2018 13:13

That Guardian piece Shock

"The recent child sex abuse claims, shocking as they are, also require some scrutiny. Some of the responses accompanying stories about the Roma are utterly devoid of any compassion and replete with the language of Ukip and Britain First. This led police chiefs to warn some about the “need to be very careful about the language they are using”."

NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/09/2018 13:14

Yep

Guardian things it's all lies
Assumes it's evil racists

What the stupid fuckers miss is that the men buying these children are / include numbers of ordinary white scotsmen. So where's the racism?

Stupid fuckers.

Flooffloof · 01/09/2018 13:15

Sometimes I read stuff like this - and think what is the bloody point. The next big child sexual abuse scandal is always just around the corner, and then you find out everyone knew about it.

I could and will cry buckets about the children involved, but what gets to me most is that this will continue. There are still scandals to come out from years ago. Talking the 70s now. I know because I was one of those children in the 70s. It's heart breaking that it's still going on. Made easier by the internet and mobile phones.
Another "tragedy" will happen, lessons will be learned blah blah. But lessons have not been learned, never are learned, seemingly never will be learned.

And yet no one ever pays the price for these things. They either die because it all took too long to come out or leave the job just in time to avoid prosecution, tipped off?
Or as above, everyone knew, no one wanted to be the whistleblower.
So so very sad.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/09/2018 13:16

I think that the "racism" was saying that the Roma sold their children for rape.

Interesting that the police keep saying that no-one ever reported anything to them.

Pirrip · 01/09/2018 13:23

Looks like some (belated) action being taken:

www.heraldscotland.com/news/16612327.six-arrests-in-glasgow-child-exploitation-probe/

GoldenWonderwall · 01/09/2018 13:27

flashing absolutely. Look at the swathes of gangs across the U.K. that have been raping girls and are being prosecuted. It’s happening in my town right now - they know where so presumably they know who but who knows what is happening? Perhaps they’ll wait a few years so no support needs finding as the victims will be adults who can fend for themselves.

How anyone can read that eyewitness account and say it’s simply racism is an idiot who needs to take a good long look at themselves and their attitudes towards abused children.

BraveAndStunning · 01/09/2018 13:28

I like Kevin McKenna's writing and generally agree with him. But he is well off the mark here. Govanhill is nothing like it was in the 80s. I wonder when he last walked down the streets at night, and I don't mean the lefty football boozers on the outskirts of Govanhill.

Govanhill is a cesspit now. I don't live in Glasgow anymore but I have lived in Govanhill, in various places over the years. I wouldn't walk there in daylight now, let alone night. This has been well documented over the years. I have heard it from teachers, social workers, residents, people who have sat on children's panels in vain. I have heard it from the residents, the bar staff and the publicans in the area when I have returned to Glasgow. It's well known. It's not a racist "sinister" conspiracy. That's just more dudebro bullshit, which I naively thought McKenna was above. Sort yourself out Kevin, this is just pish.

Bowlofbabelfish · 01/09/2018 13:29

That piece is everything that’s wrong with the guardian just now. Ffs, these are children - very young children, being sold for rape, in an organised fashion.

Stop fucking handwringing about causing offence. Being part of an ethnic minority doesn’t make you either a demon or a saint - it’s people’s ACTIONS that define them, not their origins or labels.

I despair.

@Gaspodethetalkingdog

That's a very unfair comment. Roma people are legally entitled to be in the UK. Just as Brits are legally entitled to be in Roma. You can't judge a whole population by the action of a few.

BraveAndStunning · 01/09/2018 13:34

There's no need to go to that place Gasp. Children are being abused, and I don't really give a fuck where they came from.

OP posts:
NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/09/2018 13:34

Gaspo no that's really not the big question at all.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/09/2018 13:36

I would also like to know what that guardian commentator thinks is more sinister than organised child sexual abuse.

So many people from so many sides that see so many things more important to consider than the actual children actually being raped.

Flashingbeacon · 01/09/2018 13:36

My bag was stolen recently (in Glasgow). Contactless used before I could cancel them. In places with cctv (garages, supermarkets etx). So we know when and where and the who will be on film. Police can’t investigate because no one was hurt and it was a small about of money. Fair enough police need to prioritise keeping people safe. But surely that makes it clear why things are in such a state? Criminals are relatively safe, the risk v. reward is too good.
I sound like a broken record but it comes down to money.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/09/2018 13:37

The guardian and the racists are aligned on this. Neither are interested in the abused children except as a prop to their political concerns.

Flashingbeacon · 01/09/2018 13:37

^missed my point, cancel trident and brexit and pay to protect children from rapists.
