Amy Brookes has tabled a motion for the women's labour conference.

Amy Brookes, a councillor in Rotherham who has put forward a motion at the party’s separate women’s conference, said: “Labour has quietly changed the definition of ‘woman’ without consulting women – the sex that is going to lose out.”

ROTHERHAM.

It needs to be stressed.

BettyDuMonde · 30/08/2018 11:11

Madigan’s comments make no sense at all in the context of the rest of the article - surely you can be against ‘transphobia’ whilst wanting to preserve sex-based rights?

Most Labour members would imagine so - it’s only when you use the bizarrely wide definition of transphobia that it becomes impossible.

Wanderabout · 30/08/2018 11:12

Great stuff and some more balanced reporting in the Huff Post. Thanks for doing this Amy.

Charliethefeminist · 30/08/2018 11:16

This is great. Women are working so hard, inch by inch.

Sunkisses · 30/08/2018 11:18

Well done to that woman, and hope she finds lots of support at Labour Women's Conference, and that it isn't packed out with women with penises - cough

WarmWishes · 30/08/2018 11:19

Tempted to get myself booked into the conference now, if it isn't too late. Otherwise we need to let our labour female councillors and mps who might be attending the conference know how we feel.

OP posts:
BossWitch · 30/08/2018 11:19

Hurrah!! I think the main political parties need to be really pressed hard on this issue. The classic labour voter (white working class, ethnic minorities & immigrants) will not accept the 'trans women are women' 'some women have penises' bullshit. Nor will the classic tory voter (white, middle/upper class, older). No one buys this shite except very young, 'woke' student types, who don't vote in general elections in large enough numbers to impact a GE win. At the moment I think labour and tory are trying to quietly appease the trans train to avoid being called bigoted, x,y,z-phobic, but do so quietly enough that the vast majority of the population don't know what they're up to.

ToeToToe · 30/08/2018 11:32

Great news!

""Labour has quietly changed the definition of ‘woman’ without consulting women."

"There is a groundswell of anger over the policy switch, Huffpost UK understands, with some members bidding to secure a last-minute motion to add the issue to the official agenda at next month’s Labour conference in Liverpool."

Absolutely. The transactivists have been way too powerful, dominating the policy-making on this, and silencing ordinary women.

nauticant · 30/08/2018 11:33

This should be a piece of cake for the Tories:

Up and down the country women have been coming to us with concerns about unexpected consequences of changing the law in this way. Having looked at this we do feel that some caution is necessary. [Blah, blah, blah = long grass]

It'll sell well to the straightforward working class voter and your bog standard old Tory voter. Any pressure can be dealt with by referring to some of the maddest stuff that's been flying around, such as the need for women to be able to choose intimate treatment to be carried out by vagina people, women's penises and male sex offenders in women's prisons.

Low risk, easy to execute, and leaves Labour looking like they're in the grip of some bizarre madness.

Charliethefeminist · 30/08/2018 11:33

Tw will swamp the women's conference though, won't they?

RedToothBrush · 30/08/2018 11:38

Tw will swamp the women's conference though, won't they?

The conference is in Liverpool isn't it? That will help with numbers of non-metropolitian straight talkers attending.

BettyDuMonde · 30/08/2018 11:42

I would assume that the voting delegates were all chosen months ago, when there was no trans-related motion proposed?

A late motion like this should ensure that the delegates aren’t one-issue attendees...

My CLP delegate for women’s conferences is a GC lesbian Smile

heresyandwitchcraft · 30/08/2018 11:44

Well done to the councillor, Amy Brookes! Massive thanks to her! (And hope she is staying safe)
Thanks also to that reporter who actually refrained from calling women evil TERFs, described WPUK as an independent campaign group. And got the piece into the HuffPo with a cheeky Nick Ferrari clip reminding us all that only 18% of voters are behind self-ID at the end.

EmpressOfSpartacus · 30/08/2018 11:44

That's unusually balanced for the Huffington Post.

RedToothBrush · 30/08/2018 11:45

This is part of the women's fringe rather than main conference isn't it?

arranfan · 30/08/2018 11:45

Tw will swamp the women's conference though, won't they

tbh, given the recent attitude of the Mayor of Liverpool in re: Stickerwoman I should think it might well be a popular rallying point.

ToeToToe · 30/08/2018 11:50

It's time Jeremy Corbyn realised that the behaviour of the shouty woke lefties is not a vote-winner.

A lot has happened since the 2017 General Election. I voted for Labour in that election - I wouldn't give them my vote today.

This sort of behaviour. I cannot stand Jacob Rees Mogg, or his politics - but he came off looking considerably better than the masked mob.

LangCleg · 30/08/2018 11:54

Well done, Amy! Perhaps my pusillanimous CLP (big reason why I left) will actually grow a spine.

ToeToToe · 30/08/2018 11:55

And this sort of action against left wing women's freedom of assembly.

AngryAttackKittens · 30/08/2018 11:57

Good, maybe Magic Granddad will pull his head out of the sand and make some attempt to save his party from imploding. This would be a bloody stupid issue to lose an election over.

Datun · 30/08/2018 11:59

How can Lily Madigan claim that the majority of people agree that transwomen, are women when Pink News says only 13% of Tory voters and 18% of people generally, agree with it.

In my link, it showed Nick Ferrari saying that exact thing. In the same article!

ifonlyus · 30/08/2018 12:01

Well done to Amy Brookes.

I know my Corbyn-loving friend is concerned about self-id and not happy about all women shortlists being opened to self-id transwomen. The tide is turning surely.

happydappy2 · 30/08/2018 12:05

exactly Datun I think its clear to many of us now, that its a worrying trend when young trans identified males are elevated to such positions of authority, far too quickly, and don't actually reflect reality at all.
This will have HUGE backlash for the labour party.

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 30/08/2018 12:16

If passed, the motion could be chosen for debate in the main conference, but backers fear the party wants to avoid controversy.

Questioning male people is controversial?

SPOFS · 30/08/2018 12:18

One of the articles about Linda Bellos claimed that LB is good mates with Jeremy Corbyn. If true, I hope that she can talk some sense into him and end this madness.
