Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Let’s talk about how safeguarding is being disregarded

It seems like safeguarding is being thrown out the window in favour of gender ideology.
Many of us on this site work in social care, teaching, health care and similar professions where we are well versed in safeguarding principles. Many of us struggle to see such a core framework thrown out in favour of protecting feelings.

Perhaps we should go through point by point and provide evidence of how and why safeguarding principles, procedures and practices are being thwarted and broken down?

Very courageous video. Thank you for sharing.

LemonJello · 27/08/2018 21:54

Thank you for the links. I will read over the next few days and try and find relevant sections to post on this thread so people writing to MPs/ Girl Guides/ their kids schools have an easy reference of quotes and citations. I anyone else has time to do this too I think it would be really worthwhile.

@tiredandweary - that’s terrifying! The definition of sex...I’m lost for words!

There is spin that anything other than support of trans issues is transphobic.
It means that potential hypotheses about a family's circumstance may be discounted. That is dangerous. It is the direct opposite of good practice in child protection.

The idea of schools not telling parents is a legal issue IMO and one that should be challenged. But who would want to put their child through that?

LangCleg · 27/08/2018 22:46

I do not see any way in which self-ID is compatible with acceptable levels of safeguarding of vulnerable adults and children.

missedith01 · 27/08/2018 23:01

Adults want to keep their genitals and self ID but let's make sure that every child is medicated and mutilated while they are young.

That, and then this ...

wave the Trans wand and everyone is going to be running in circles of terrified wokeness and affirmation, in fear of being shamed/falling foul of guidelines.

We've learned nothing from Saville, if the people we charge with keeping the vulnerable safe are, once again, frightened to act, frightened to even speak.

I work for a charity that serves vulnerable people and as you'd expect, has policies and guidelines for this and for that, and when it comes to safeguarding they aren't worth the paper they're printed on. If I mention a safeguarding concern to my manager I expect nothing to come of it. I'm essentially covering myself. I don't work with children, and I hope it works better for them.

LangCleg · 28/08/2018 11:20

Several Mermaids trustees - including the trustee responsible for safeguarding - are anonymised/redacted in official charity documentation.

Privacy is not more important than safeguarding.

This issue was also raised with regards the trustees of Mesmac discussed on recent thread:

Apologies if this has been posted before but I couldn't find anything on here about this group.

Lots of things don't sit well with me; a club that caters for very vulnerable YP from 13 years old, secret meeting places, no mention of police checks, no mention of the fitness of those doing one to one mentoring, a club that 'welcomes parents', activity days, overnight trips.

LadybirdsAreBirds · 28/08/2018 16:21

Thingybob

On the Prism (youth group) website there's a tab for "Tommy Bears (sic) Travels" but when you click on it there's nothing there

David Challenor called himself Balloo

LadybirdsAreBirds · 28/08/2018 16:23

Thingbob

Yes, no link to Safeguarding policies

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/08/2018 16:45

So many issues with that youth group for me:

Mixing vulnerable 13 years olds and 21yr old adults.

The secret location - do parents know where their children are?

The "mentoring" of these vulnerable children - who is mentoring, and to what end?

Their "Links" section seems somewhat trans heavy

The addition of the T, how are young gays and lesbians treated here?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/08/2018 16:46

Tommy Bear is an actual rainbow bear (see their FB page)

Thingybob · 28/08/2018 16:58

ItsAllGoingToBeFine

The "mentoring" of these vulnerable children - who is mentoring

We know that an 18 year old from a very dysfunctional family was considered fit to be a mentor in 2015.

LadybirdsAreBirds · 28/08/2018 16:59

Yup

Househelp123 · 28/08/2018 17:03

Just a heads up that Mumsnet are doing a Facebook chat (or something) with the NSPCC all about safeguarding and have started a thread asking for questions. I have asked one.

R0wantrees · 28/08/2018 17:45

This recent case in Scotland where two young girls aged 10 and 12 were sexually assauted in the women's toilets in two supermarkets by a 17 year old raises some serious questions.

The young person who has been convicted and waiting sentencing pending reports was 17, had a long history of ongoing social care involvement. The local newspaper report uses gender neutral descriptors thoght reported speech which describes then as looking and sounding male.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3329936-teen-films-girl-in-toilet

Its possible that there may be a case review due to the circumstances.

Also important to be aware of the social care toolkit and resources made available to young people in the care system.

Warnings by Claude Knight (former director of Kidscape) :

clicky link to article:www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/3006679/paedophile-jailed-transgender-christyl-knight-christopher-nobile/

(Extracts)
The con is desperate for a fresh start but child protection expert Claude Knights said: “Allowing these individuals to hide a secret past is a dangerous practice.”

"[Margaret-Ann Cummings, a campaigner whose son was murdered by a convicted sex-offender] added: “It’s not unusual for sex offenders to want a new identity but this is the most disturbing case I’ve heard of.

“When someone, so soon after getting out of jail, is trying to change not just their name but their sex and appearance too, it sounds like they’re trying to hide rather than reform.”

Echoing her calls, child protection expert Claude Knights said: “Anyone who’s fuelled the vile trade in indecent images of children and therefore contributed to their sexual abuse should not be allowed to change their name.”

Intresting to note that Claude Knight has commented.
She has recently retired after 15 years as head of Kidscape: www.kidscape.org.uk/news/2016/may/ceo-claude-knights-announces-her-retirement

dontbringmedown · 28/08/2018 17:54

It really worries me the regulations and policies that are being thrown out of the window in order to keep a small number of very demanding, domineering people happy.

We need some VERY brave head teachers to speak up and say Not On My Watch.
Headteachers who are nearing retirement should speak up and make themselves heard - as they have less to lose, unlike those whose careers could easily be damaged by these 'bullies'.

dontbringmedown · 28/08/2018 17:55

Trans organisations are unpicking safeguarding

Fucking Hell.
that's all.
